Be it known that I, ALTON E. Gosso, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Berths, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to improvements in berths, and more particularly to berths adapted to be pivotally supported so that they may be swung up out of their operative, horizontal position, whereby the premises in which they are located may be easily cleaned, and whereby a minimum of obstruction will be maintained in said premises.
The invention has among its other objects the production of a device of the kind described which is simple, sanitary, convenient, compact, durable, reliable, economical, eflicient and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable.
Another object of my invention is to provide berths as above described which may be supported from any type of wall members or posts.
To this end my invention consists of the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

single bracket as aptrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 and 2 represent the floor and ceiling respectively of any suitable premises in which I prefer to install my berths, such berths being usually installed in detention stations or camps, construction camps, traveling conveyances and other suitable or preferred places.
Upright posts 3 extend from the floor to the ceiling, being secured thereto by plates 4:, said posts being spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the lengths of the bunks, as shown in Fig. 3. Secured to the posts 3 at any suitable height above the floor, intern'iediate supporting brackets 5 and end brackets 6 and 7 arranged, the end brackets 7 being specially intended for attachment to wooden posts or columns 8, as shown in Figs. 8 and 10.
The berths are enerally arranged in tiers, as shown in Fig. 1, and therefore the brackets for supporting said berths are arranged, one above the other at different vertical points on the posts, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The body-supporting cot portion of the berth comprises a frame having end members 9. 9, and side members 10, 10, said frame being covered with canvas C, or other suitable fabric. The frame members 9 each comprises a sheet metalrod of angle iron cross-section, having its ends reversely bent upon itself to provide a loop 11 lying beeosso COMPANY, or (inn 1 tween the legsof the angle and having a small ext-ending leg portion 12 adapted to be secured to the main body portion of the angle iron by a bolt or rivet 13, or any other equivalent means. The side frame members 10 are adapted to be inserted within and enclosed by said loops 11 at their ends, as shown in the drawings, there being a locking bolt 14 extending through suitable registering apertures in the members 9 and 10, as shown more clearly in Figs. 5 to 10 inclusive, said locking bolts at the outer of said side frames 10 being preferably in the form of aneye- ,most clearly shown in Fig. 11, the inner side of the end members 9 may be and are preferably turned down between the ends,
' as indicated at 11, the same being preferably slightly rolled or curved. This obviates a sharp edge against which the user might strike his head or feet, thereby possibly causing injury, and gives a finished appearance.
The central or intermediate brackets 5 each have four arms 16, each with hooked ends 17, said brackets being secured to the posts 3 by bolts 18 extending transversely thereof. If desired, the posts 3 may have a plurality of vertically arranged apertures therethrough, whereby said brackets may be adjustably positioned at various elevations. The hooks 17 are preferably of a shape to snugly receive the looped ends 11 of the frame members 9 and have elongated closed end slots 19 therein adapted to slidably receive said bolts 14, whereby the frames may be pivoted about said hooked ends 17, said pivotal movement being limited by the ends of said slot 19, against which said bolt let abuts. The brackets 5, each having four arms, are common to four berths, thus'reducing the amount of material and the cost of construction.
The end brackets 6 are similar to the brackets 5, except that they have only a single pair of arms 20, 20, said brackets being secured to the posts 3 by bolts 21 or any other equivalent means for the purpose. The end'bearing loops 11 of the end frame members 9 are adapted to be pivotally supported in the hooked ends 22 of the arms 20 similar to the engagement of the members 9 in the ends of the arms 16, said hooked bearing ends having elongated slots 23 therein, as shown in Fig. 8, adapted to receive the bolt 24 therethrough and to limit the pivotal movement of said bolt therein. Apertures 25 are provided in the brackets 5 and 6, as shown in Figs. 1, 7 and 8, whereby one end of a supporting cable or chain 26 may be secured, the other end of said chain being secured to said eyebolts 15.
The bracket shown in Fig. 10 is adapted to be used for attachment to wooden posts, and has a Hat face 27, whereby lag screws or other equivalent fastening means 28 may be inserted therethrough for attachment to the wooden post 8.
As shown in Fig. 2 the berths may be swung upwardlyinto inoperative position so that the floor of the room may be easily cleaned and also preventing dust or the like settling onto the cot portion of the berth. This also enables the room to be used for other than sleeping purposes during a portion of the day.
In order to detachably hold the frame members in inoperative position while the berths are not in use, I have provided latch members 28 having hooked ends 29, said latch members being pivotally secured to the posts 3 so that the hooks 29 may engage over the frame members 9, as shown in Fig. 2. i
in Fig. 13 I have shown a modified bracket 30 which is adapted to be placed on a wall, the same being substantially similar to the bracket illustrated in Fig. 10, except in this case the berths may be folded up against the wall or post instead of between walls or posts.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, arrangement, construction and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses men tioned.
lV hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. in a device of the kind described, a cot comprising side and end frame members, said end frame members having integral tubular bearings at their ends, the side frame members being enclosed at their ends within said bearing ends of the end frame members, andbrackets adapted to be arranged on upright posts to pivotally receive and enthe tubular bearing portions of said end frame members and means for supporting the free edge of said frame members from said posts.
2. In a device of the kind described, a cot comprising side and end frame members, said end frame members being formed in angle iron shape having integral tubular bearings at their ends, the side frame mem bers being enclosed at their ends within said bearing ends of the end frame members, and means for pivotally securing said frames to upright posts, said means comprising brackets arranged on said posts and having hooks at their ends to pivotally receive and engage the tubular bearing portions of said end frame 'members and means for supporting the free edge of said frame members from said posts, whereby said frame may be pivotally supported therefrom.
3. In a device of the kind described, a cot comprising side and end frame members, said end frame members being formed in angle iron shape having integral tubular bearings at their ends, the side frame members being enclosed at their ends within said bearing ends of the end frame members, brackets arranged on said posts and having hooks at their ends to pivotally receive and engage the tubular bearing portions of said end frame members, means limiting the pivoting of said cot, and a chain secured to the free edge of said frame members from said posts whereby said frame may be supported therefrom.

In a device of the kind described and in combination, a plurality of aligned upright posts, means for securing said posts between the fioor and ceiling, bracket means arranged on each of said posts and having arms whereby cot frames may be suspended between one arm of each pair of posts, the brackets on the end posts having a pair of oppositely extending aligned arms having hooked ends, the intermediate brackets comprising two pairs of oppositely extending aligned arms having hooks at their ends, whereby said cot frames may be pivotally supported between said posts along one edge at opposite ends in said hooked ends of the brackets, the end brackets engaging a pair of cot frames and the intermediate brackets engaging two pairs of cot frames, a pin and slot connection between said frames and arms at their pivotal connection, to limit said pivotal movement, tension means connected to the outer free edges of said frames and to said posts to support said frames in a horizontal position, and means for detachably latching said frames to said posts after they have been swung upwardly erative position.
5. in a cot assembly, a bracket of the kind described, comprising four outwardly extending arms having hooks at their ends to provide bearings for a cot frame, said hooked ends of said arms having closed end slots therein to slidably receive a projecting member of a cot frame, said cot frame be ing pivotally engageable in said hooked ends and limited in its pivotal movement by the engagement of said projecting member in said slot.

In a device of the kind described, a cot comprising side and end frame members connected together, a fabric across said frame members, said end frame members being of sheet metal having an angle iron formation with integral tubular bearings at their ends, said bearings being tangential to one of the legs of said angle and closed at one side of the opening therethrough by the other angle leg, the side into inop-r frame members having ends enclosed within said tubular bearings of the end frame members.
7. A cot comprising side and end frame members connected together at their ends and a fabric over said frame, said side frame members comprising rods, said end frame members comprising sheet metal rods of substantially'angle iron formation, one of the legs of said angle being flat and rounded at its ends, the other of said legs of the angle being bent downwardly therealong to provide a rounded longitudinally extending edge, the bent over portion being cut back from the ends thereof, the flat portion of said second mentioned leg of the angle being reversely bent upon itself to form a loop extending beyond said rounded portion, and adapted to receive therein the ends of said side frame members. v
8. A cot comprising side and end frame members connected together at their ends and a fabric over said frame, said side frame members comprising rods, said end frame members comprising sheet metal rods of substantially angle iron formation, one of the legs of said angle being fiat and rounded at its ends, the other of said legs of the angle being bent downwardly therealong to provide a rounded longitudinally extending edge, the bent over portion being out back from the ends thereof, the flat portion of said second mentioned leg of the angle being reversely bent upon itself to form a loop extending beyond said rounded portion, and adapted to receive therein the ends of said side frame members, said rounded end of said first mentioned leg closing one side of said loop and limiting the movement of the side member therethrough, and means for securing said side frame members in place in said loops.
