Application filed January 25, 1922. Serial .No. 531,785.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that Tnnooonn A. HAR- TUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Gravel Dump, of which the-following is a specification.
v'llhis invention relates to wagon bodies, and more particularly to the construction of the bed or bottom thereof, i The primary object of the invention is to provide a sectional-wagon bottom, novel means being provided for operating the sections to move the same to positions to cause material supported thereby, to; fall from the wagon body. I
Another object of the invention is to pro vide means for locking the sections of the wagon bottom against movement to insure the same being held in their closed positions.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means disposed adjacent to the operators seat for manipulating the operating means, to control the movements of the sections of the bottom. v
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in thecombination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of'what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the in vention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a. fragmental elevational view of a vehicle, showing a body constructed in accordance with the present invention, as applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the body.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the body.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-40f Figure 2. a
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view through the body of the device.
Figure 6 is a fragmental enlarged detail view disclosing the locking means for. locking the sections of the bottom in their hori- Zontal positions.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the body includes side members 5 and end 1nembers 6 to which are secured side boards 7 and end boards 8.
F ormed in the end members 6 "and end boards 8, are slotted portions 9 providing gu1deways for the locking plates 10 which move therein, the ends of the guide plates 10 moving in suitable slots formed in the side members 5 of the wagon body. [Rods 11 have their ends connected to the end members of the wagon body and are disposed in spaced relation, transversely thereof to provide supports for the sections 12, forming the bottom of the wagon body.
Hinge members 13 are carried by the respective sections, and embrace portions of the rod 11 associated therewith to permit the sections 12 to swing downwardly and dis,-
charge material supporzted thereon. The rods 11 are also supported intermediate their ends as by means of the hangers 14 which are supported on the transversely extending rods 15 which have their secured to the side boards 7 in any suitable and well known manner, the hangers 1 L being however of a thickness to lie between adjacent sections 1.2, These rods 15 brace the rods 11 at points inte rmediate-the ends thereof, the number of rods 15 being controlled by the length of the wagon body.
A rod 16 has its ends disposed within suitable openings formed in the side members 5, and are secured to the side boards 8 as by means of the bracket members 17. Mounted to rotate on the rod 16, are the controlling arms 18 which extend laterally therefrom and have openings 19 formed in the free ends thereof, the openings 19 being designed to accommodate hook members formed at the upper ends of the connecting links 20, the lower ends of the connecting links 20 having suitable connection with adjacent sections 12 of the floor of the body, whereby movement of the links and controlling arms results in a relative movement of the sections.
Secured to the rods 16 and disposed at one end thereof, is an operating arm 21, which is curved downwardly and formed with an eye to accommodate one end of the coiled spring 22, the opposite end of the coiled spring being anchored to the wagon body as at 23. A suitable operating rod is indicated at 24 and has connection with the arm 21 at a point adjacent to the free end thereof, the opposite end of the operating rod 24 being disposed adjacent to the operators seat and provided with a suitable lever to control the movements of the rod to operate the arms 18.
Extending transversely of the wagon body, is a rod 25 which has its ends extended beyond the side boards of the body where the same support the links 26, the ends of the links 26 being formed with openings to accommodate the inner ends of the rods 27 and 28 respectively, each of which rods has connection with a pivoted bar 29, the lower ends of which bars 29 being disposed in openings formed in the ends of the locking plates 10, as clearly shown by'Figure 1 of the drawings.
In order that the, rods 27 and 28 may be operated to cause the operation of the locking plates, a controlling rod 30is provided, which also has its forward end disposed at a point adjacent to the operators seat, and in easy access to the operator. It might be further stated that a plate 31 is secured to the ends of each section 12, to reduce friction and wear between the sections 12 and vlocking plates 10, disposed at the ends thereof.
From the foregoing, it will be obvious that a structure as disclosed is one wherein the operating arms and locking plates will be protected against material such as sand or gravel from retarding movement of the operating mechanism, to prevent the operation of the sections to dump ordischarge material supported thereon.
The operation is as follows:
Assuming that the wagon body is loaded with sand or gravel, and it is desired to discharge the contents of the Wagon body. The rod 30 is moved to slide the locking plates to positions within the confines of the slotted portions 9. With the locking plates in this position, the rod 24: is moved, causing the sections 12 to take positions with their side faces in parallel relation with each other, discharging the contents of the wagon body, between adjacent sections.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a wagon body, side and end members, said end members having slotted portions formed in the inner surface thereof adjacent to their lower edges, locking plates adapted to slide within the slotted portions, means at each end of each locking plate for moving the locking plates within the slotted portions throughout their entire lengths of the locking plates, a sectional bottom, the sections of the bottom being pivotally supported, means for moving the sections of the bottom to their active positions, and the ends of said sections adapted to rest on the locking plates to hold the sections of the bottom in their active positions.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiiixed mysignature in the presence of two witnesses.
lVitnesses GEO. CALHOUN, STUART FRANCIS.
