CHARLES E. HOWRD, OF ANACONDA., MONTANA.
Application filed August 10, 1920, Serial No. 402,557. Renewed April 16, 1923.
To all whom t may concern.'v
. Be it known that I, CHARLES E. HOWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anaconda, in the county of Deerlodge and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Grate, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a grate for outdoor purposes, such as camping, picknicking, automobiling and prospecting; the obj ect of the invention being the production of a grate for the desired purposes, simple in construction, which may be set up and taken apart, capable of being packed within a limited space, easily transported from place to place and of weight which will permit of the same being carried with ease.
It is another general object of my invention to provide a grate wherein the several parts are of a very simple form so that the device may be manufactured at small cost and which will be very serviceable and convenient in practical use.
With the aboveand other objects in View, the invention consists in the improved combination, arrangement and construction of the several parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a side elevation of the grateV illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof, and
`i'digure 3 is a section taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 represents the main supporting rods of the grate. .Each of these rods is provided with apertures adjacent the end portions and an aperture intermediate the ends for a purpose to be hereinafter brought out. The legs 6 having the threaded Shanks 7 are provided with the supporting nut 8 and the threaded shank 7 is then received within the apertures provided' in the end portions of the main supporting rods 5. The grate rods 9 which are provided with apertures at each end are then placed over the main supporting rod 5 so that the threaded shank 7 of the legs 6 are received in the apertures. The retaining nuts 10 are then threaded upon the shrank 7. The replaceable or removable grate rod 11 is provided' with the lugs 12 at each end so that saine may be placed in the central apertures of the main supporting rod 5 when it is is desirous or necessary to use this'central removable rod 11. It will also bev noted that the legs 6 are sharpened at their ends so that they may be driven in the ground when it is found necessary. It will also be noted that the grate rods 5, 9 and 1l are in the form of flat, rectangular metal bars and when not in use may be easily removed from engagement with each other so as to be packed together so as to take up the least possible space. It will also be seen that the device as described may be easily assembled and disassembled when de sired and that the supporting nuts 8 may be threaded upon the threaded shanks 7 of the legs 6 so as to accommodate any unevenness in the ground.
From the foregoing description, taken in' connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation of the grate will be readily understood without a more extended explanation. As numerous changes in form, proportion, and in the minor de-v tails of construction may bev resorted to without departing from the spirit of this invention, I d'o not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:-
1. A grate including a pair of main supporting rods being substantially rectangular in cross section, a plurality of legs having threaded Shanks, supporting nuts on said threaded Shanks, retaining nuts on said threaded Shanks for holding the main sup porting rods in rigid engagement with the ving bars being substantially rectangular -in cross section carried by said supporting nuts, a pair of grate bars being substantially rectangular in cross section supported on said supporting'rods, a removable -grate bar being substantially rectangular in cross section having lugs at each end, said supporting rods being provided with centrally lolll?) cated apertures for reeeivingpsaid lugsand means for holding the main supporting bars, the grate bars and the legs in rigid engagement Witheaeh other.'
3. A grate including a plurality of legs, supporting nuts mounted on said legs, supporting rods having' apertures at each end mountedmonwsaid legs so as to rest.` on;l
the supporting nuts, said supporting rods being rectanguliarin cross seotionandpr` vided With `centrally located aperturesf. and-
