HAY-DRYING DEVICE.
Application filed May 7, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FEDoR SZEWCZUK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay-Drying Devices, of which the following is a speclfication.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an adjustable supporting means for a large quantity of hay for permitting the air to have better access thereto for the purpose of quickly drying the hay, the de vice being foldable and readily adjusted at different heights in its operative arrangement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a foldablesupport readily set up for use having means for retaining the same in different adjusted positions for supporting objects thereon, the structure possessing great strength and being easy and inexpensive to manufacture.

F Iy device is primarily provided for supporting hay which has been freshly cut in a position to be aerated for quickly drying the hay, although the same maybe used for supporting other articles. The complete device when set up for use is in the form of a frame or rack formed of a plurality of strut members 10. Each of said strut members consists of two poles or legs 11 adjustably connected together by a hinge block 12, whereby the poles 11 may be set up in the ground such as 13 by forcing the pointed free ends 14: of the poles thereinto.
The hinge blocks 12 are substantially triangular in end elevation with a pivot pin 15 longitudinally extending through the chamber 16 within the block. A plurality of grooves 17 of graduated depth are provided upon the inner faces of the sides 18 of the block 12 adapted to receive the reduced Specification of Letters Patent.

, The shanks 19 are laterally slidable upon the pins 15, whereby the shanks may be positioned within desired ones of the grooves 17 as illustrated in Fig. 4: of the drawing and whereby the sides 18 of the block 12 will limit the separation of the legs 11 when set up for use. It will be apparent, that the shanks 19 of the pair of poles 11 forming one of the strut members 10 will be seated in grooves 17 of corresponding depth and by changing the shanks 19 to different pairs of grooves 17 having different depths, the height of the block 12 may be altered as well as the distance between the ground-engaging ends 14 of the poles 11.
A plurality of hooks 20 are carried upon the outer sides of the poles 11 for receiving rods 21 adapted to connect a plurality of strut members 10 together when the device is set up in its frame formation as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. It will be noted that as many of the rods 21 may be employed as desired and that the rods as well as the struts 10 are then positioned for sustaining great loads, such for instance as wet hay which is thrown over the device.
The hinge blocks 12 have curved tops 22 forming a roof permitting water to flow off of the same without entering the hinge sockets 16 while this form of block also slightly penetrates the hay when thrown upon the device for maintaining the hay in a drying position thereon. When the hay is scattered over the frame in the manner herein described, the same is of tent form permitting the air to freely pass into the tent from the opposlte end thereof and up through the hay for drying the same. The device possesses great strength for supporting large quantities of hay and when not desired for use the poles 11 may be suitably shifted upon the hinge pins 15 for permitting the poles to be folded side by side with the rods 21 remaining in position thereon if desired. The rods, however, are readily removable from the hooks 20 of the poles 11 for disconnecting the strut members 10 for convenience in carrying from one place to another as well as for storage purposes.
What I claim as new is 1. A supporting strut member comprising a socketed block substantially trian lar in end elevation having its opposite inclined sides provided with grooves of diflferent corresponding depths, a pin longitudinally extending through said block, and two poles having reduced shanks pivotally and slidably mounted upon said pin whereby the said shanks are adapted for positioning within grooves of corresponding depth when the device is set up for use.
2. A strut membercomprising poles having ground-engaging points at one set of ends and reduced shanks at their opposite ends, a hinge block provided with a curved top and with a bottom socket, a pin carried by said block extending longitudinally through the socket thereof with said shanks slidably and pivotally mounted thereon, the inner faces of the opposite sides of said block having a plurality of grooves of corresponding depth adapted for receiving said shanks when the poles are outstretched with the block at the desired height.
3. A hay support comprising a strut including poles. a pivot connecting block for the upper ends of said poles, and connections between said block and poles whereby the amount of separation between the poles of said strut is adapted for regulation.
4:. An adjustable strut comprising a pair of poles, a hinge block for said poles, and connecting means between said block and poles whereby said poles may be relatively moved slidably and pivotally at will.
5. A hay-drying frame comprising a strut member, said member including a pair of poles, and a connecting block for said strut member adapted for permitting relative sliding and pivotal movement between the poles of said member, the said block having a curved top adapted for penetrating hay when positioned for drying upon the device.
