Description

June 19, 1923.
H. A. PYKE WINDOW CLEANER Filed March 29. 1920 Patented June 19, 1923.
r tars E I I WINDONV CLEANER.
Application filed March 29, 1920. Serial No. 369,687.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD AUGUs'rUs PYKE, subj'ectof the King of Great Britain, residing at l Ligar Street, Grafton, Auckland, New Zealand, have invented a. new and useful Improved l/Vindow Cleaner; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to cleaners for, windows, walls, and the like, in which a pad, cloth or the like is removably attached upon a base, such base being adapted to be easily attached to and detached from a handle.
he object of the present invention is to construct such a cleaner in a simple form so that the cleaning material may be readily placed in position and removed, and also to n-ovide a handle for use therewith, having means thereon for the quick attachment or detachment of the cleaner proper.
According to this invention, a base or frame of suitable material, such as wood, is provided with two spring clips on the upper side thereof, such clips being mounted upon a rod arranged transversely in eyebolts or brackets, near the respective edges of the base so that the clips extend out to the two ends thereof. The cleaning material is placed beneath the base, the ends thereof folded over the ends of the base and held in position on the base top by the spring clips. The handle, preferably made telescopic is provided at one end with jaws to grip the rod and to hold the cleaner so that it pivots thereon.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective, view of the base and accompanying parts forming the cleaner proper. v
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the end of the handle.
lfiigureB is a view showing the whol cleaner assembled and ready for use.
Referring to the drawings, a flat base plate 1. has a rod 2 arranged transversely and centrally upon its upper side, and held in eyebolts 3 fixed into the base plate 1. Upon this rod 2 clips 4 and 5 are pivoted so as to extend outward towards the respective ends of the base plate. A coil spring 6 located upon the rod 2 has its ends respectively bearing upon and retaining the clips .t and 5 upon the base 2 with a spring tension. The material 7 is laced beneath the base plate 1 and its ends folded over and around the respective endsofthe plate and then held down by the clips 4 and 5 so that the underneath surface forms the polishing pad. I
The handle consists of tubular rods 8 and 9 telescoping one Within the other and having a thun'ib screw 10 to secure them at any desired length. The rod 8 has arranged upon one end thereof a block 11 sloped away at the top to form one jaw 12, which is strengthened by a metal plate 13. Another jaw 14- of metal is pivoted to the block by pins 15 so that it extends along above the top of the block and engages thereon. Each of the jaws has a recess 16 formed therein and adapted to coincide when the jaws are closed, These recesses are also adapted to enclose between them the rod 2 upon the back of the base plate 1.
A collar 17 is provided to encircle the jaws as shown in Figure 2 and to slide along them, when the jaws are closed, so as to hold them in the closed position, or to free the upper jaw so that it may beraised as shown by the dotted lines in'Figure 2 in order to free the cleaner from the handle. /Vhen the jaws are closed upon the rod 2, the-cleaner is pivotedto the handle so that it may be freely worked to and fro .over a surface while maintaining a flat contact therewith.
The link is adapted toxspring into recesses 18 formed in the top edges of the jaw 14L, when it is moved to the closing position, so
i that it isthen held firmly in such position.
I claim 2 A cleaner for windows and the like, comprising a back, pivot, rod extending across the back, in spaced relation thereto andhav-' ing its ends connected thereto, clamps pivotally mounted on said rod, arsp'ring on said rod and activeon 'saidclamps to cause fabric to be held between said back and clamps, and a handle having spaced elements detachably mounted on pivot'rod.
In testimony whereof I have signedthis specification in the presence oftwosubscribing witnesses.
HAROLD AUGUSTUS PYKE.
