Description

--lm 1931- E. s. GORDON WINDOW CLEANING DEVICE Filed July 8, 1929 AT RIVEY Patented Jan. 27, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT 0F FljCE EUGENIA s. eonnon, on NEW ROCHELLE, New YORK wINnoW-oLEANInG DEVICE Application filed Ju1y8,
My invention relates to a'window cleaning device comprising a. thin washing and a thin drying element, respectively carried at oppo site ends of a slender substantially rigid rod, 5 which permlts the user to clean the lnside and outside of the panes of each window frame pass between the outer and inner, frames of i; the window.
Another ob ectof'the invention is to provide such a device which, when assembled,
consists of a singlemember, so that it may be used with one hand to first wash and later dry the windows, the rigidity'of the rod car rying the Washing and. drying elements permitting suiiicient pressure to be transmitted to the elements, when the deviceis between i the window'frames, to efficiently clean the an inside of the panes of the outer frame and the outside of the panes ofthe inner frame. Another object of the invention is to provide means pivotally' secured to the'rod, for securing the rod to the hand of the user, thus e permitting the rod "to be reversed at will without danger of dropping the rod asfrom a window of considerable height above the ground. Another object of theinvention is to pro- 1 sembled, of a single member, whichemploys be easily and economically.manufactured With the above and other objects in View,
ments and combinations more fully pointed out hereinafter. I j V 1 7 Referring now to the drawings Figure 1, is a front elevation of'the device Y showing the washingand the drying elements carried at opposite ends of the rod.
Figure 2, is'a side detail view of the form shown in Figure 1, showing the drying element arranged substantially perpendicular to andprojecting slightly beyond the rod.-

00 In the preferred form shown in Figures '1,
: 2 and a, the rod "l,is of slender and substantially rigid construction. Carried at oneend of the'rod is an open-ended Wire loopfZ, whose open'ends g, are soldered to the rod. The 65 loopi2, is adapted to hold a suitable thin washing elements, such as cloth or the like,
which may be .wrapped around the loop. Carried at the opposite end of the rod is a metal member 5, adapted to hold the thin -IO drying element 6, which may be of rubber. Member 5, is soldered to the rodand is mounted substantially perpendicular thereto. This member projects slightly beyondthe. rod. Rod 1, also carries a sliding ring 7', which is '75 adapted -to move freely along and tor evolve about the rod. Ring 7, carries a swivel 8, to which is secured a wristband or handgrip 9.
In the modified form shown in F igure 3, the rod 1.. is of similar construction tothat shown in Figure 1 In'this form the washing element 4:, may be wrapped-about one end' of the rod and suitably securedtheretmas by elastics. The'other end of the rod carries a holding member 10, which is preferably of triangular shape and adapted to carry the drying element, such as rubber strip 6." The holding member is soldered tojthe rod and extends lengthwise thereof. Similar means are provided for securing therod to the wrist or hand of the user. 7 l g The projection of the drying and washing elementsfrom the rod, in both 'forlnsgis only slightly beyond the rod, and allows both consists of a single member. 'It may be thoroughly dry the windows.
used with one hand to clean the window panes, inside and out of both sashes. It avoids the necessity for strapping or clamping the device to the window sill. It allows the user to efiieiently clean the windows from the floor of the room, without standing on the sill, or a ladder. The device may, of course, be made in several standard sizes to be used with windows of various lengths,
In use the wristband or hand grip is slipped over the wrist or about the hand of the user and the rod grasped with one hand. The thin washing element having been suitably moistened may then be used to wash the windows. The grip on the rod may then be released. The sliding ring and swivel permits the rod to be quickly reversed. The
wristband or handgrip avoids the danger of the device falling from the window to the ground. The thin drying" element may then be used. after reversal of the rod. to dry the windows. When the outside panes of the lower, inner sash are to be cleaned, the portion of the rod at the end which carries the washing element is inserted, with the washing element, between the window sashes,
after the lower sash has been thrown up.
The outside panes of the lower sash are then washed. The rod and washing element are then withdrawn and the rod reversed. The drying element and the rod arethen reinsertechas shown in Figure 4, and the panes thoroughly dried. As shown in this figure, the rod may be gripped so that sufficient pres sure is transmitted to the drying element to It will also be noted that the construction and arrangement of the parts is such that the device may be manipulated without interference.
Having thus described the invention and its operation. it will be understood that changes may he made in carrying the invenlion into elfect, without departing;' from the principle thereof.
hat I claim is:
A window cleaner composed of a relative ly slender and substantially rigid rod havingwindow engaging means on its respective ends, a sleeve slidable and rotatable on the rod between the ends of the rod, a wrist encircling member, and means to swivelly connect said wrist encircling; member to the sleeve, whereby the rod may be rotated about said wrist encircling member to reverse its ends, while the wrist encircling member remains on the wrist oi the operator. thereby to enable first cleaning and then drying of the window. V
In witness whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
