To all whom it may cancer/L; e I a. Be it known that I, HEINRIH K F L,
ai citizen of the an Bepiubliy, residiii'g' at Frankfort-on-t -Main, Germany A h 6 invented certain new and usefuljmprovements in Ap-paratus fer RemoVmg Blast Gases from VVater-Gas Generators, of which or other clistillation products having a high e carbon content to impart the desired luminous properties to thegas, it is-a common practice in the art to Carry on the distillation of the fuel in a generatorin the upper part of which the fuel is distillecl and the gasification is carried on in the lower part to produce the water gas In order to obi tain the high temperature required for the tdecomposition of the steam and the production of the water gas thecolumn of fuel in the generator is first'raised to incandescence by forcing a blast through the fuel for several minutes after which steam is introduced. u i
In the practical operation of carrying out the process for producing water gas a seri ous defect is encountered which consists in the formation in the center of the generator of a large core of incompletely distilled fuel which not only interferes with the proper circulation and production of the gases but also decreases the output of tar and other 'non-volatile hydrocarbons;
The principal object of this invention therefore, is to provide a means for pre venting the formation of the aforementoned core and thereby overcoming the defects heretofore noted. This means consists in inserting into the top of thejgenerator an.
element for carrying ofi the blowing gases, and in extending this element to the zone which separates the upper distilling portion or shaft 'of the generator from the `lower combustion portion or shaf t` these elements being inserted into that part of the generator wherethe unburned fuel core was formerly formed. By this expedient the novel effect is obtained that the formation of the core of undistilled fuel is pre- Vented, the carrying oli of the blowing gases is not only faeilitated but is efl'ected in such a manner that the blast gases are prevent'ed tions.
from driving up into the upper distillation o ,gen f te s ri .p oducers ;in l
are" subdivided 'into "compartments For the accomplishment of these and such i further objects 'as will hereinafter be ap-` i parent to those skilled in the' art to' which ths appertans, the "invention consists in the Construction, combinati'on and arrangeings, 'wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of p arts herein specifically described i and llustrated in the accompanying draw- 7 0 v ment *of the invention, but it is to be under- I vertical section through a'generator or proi du'cer embodying my invention.
The fuel is charged through thecharging devices e, into the generatorgthe upper por- [j i tion' of which as indicated by the letter A comprses the upper distillation layer while' the lower portion indicated by the reference letter B comprisesthe gas and combustion producinglayer in whichthe steam is de,- i q composed and combines 'with the carbon of u the fuelto' form the water gas in accordance with the well known process and 'reac- In accorclance shown in the `drawings,' a number oftubes C are inserted through the `top of the generator and .extend `downwardly therein to with my invention, and as the zone which separates the upper layer. from the lower layer B.` During the blowing step of the process theblast fof air or other gas' which is introduced in the generator through the openings a; is carried off directly by thetubes C, and escapes through l the registers b. During the introduction *of the steam or the gas producing perioc1,` the steam which enters 'through the steam con-3 duit c traverses the whole fuel column' and flows out through the gas `outlets` d, which( is caused, by closing the registers b, these be ing provided with valves or dampers aca combustion zone through which the air blast ,passes from the openings (t` 'to the' It will be understood that the 'tu'bes C' may be of any desrable shape,- sze, orvnumber and that in a small producer :L single' tube may be used which' forms-in efi'ect an extension of the chimney.
'Having thus described my nventon, What I claim as new and desre to. secure by Letters Patenta ofthe United States isi- The combra'ton `with &Watergas gener ator of type perating With 'alternate gas-making land' ar blastnghperods and having an 'upper distll ng zone &nda lower combuston zonefdurng the blastng period,
