Description
v. E. DESSART DECORATIVE LANTERN June 12, 1923.
Filed Oct. 17. 1922 IN V EN TOR A TTORNE Y Patented June 12, 1923.
urreo STATES meats? vro'ronn. DESSAR'I', or BROOKLYN,1-TEW YORK. I
DECORATIVE LANTERN.
Application filed October 17, 1922. Serial No. 595,035.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR E. DESSART, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Brooklyn, county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Decorative Lanterns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a decorative lantern for use as a table or house decoration, and the objects of the invention are to construct said lantern in two pieces so that the same can be nested for packing; further objects of the invention are to provide means for securing the separate parts of said lantern together for use in a simple and effective manner at small expense.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a front View of a decorative lantern made in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse section of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the parts nested for packing.
In the drawings 1 designates the front member of a decorative lantern, preferably made of paste-board or other suitable material, preferably colored and made, in the present instance, in the form of a pumpkin, having suitable cut out portions to form a face. The eyes, nose and teeth of said face being suitably painted, in the present instance, on a iece of transparent paper 2 suitably pasted on the inside of the front member 1 in the back of said out out portions.
The open end of the front member 1 is provided, in the present instance, with an outwardly extending inner peripheral band 3 suitably pasted or otherwise secured thereto, over which the open end of a back member 4 is adapted to fit to close the lantern. The back member 4 is also preferably colored and made, in the present instance, in the form of a pumpkin.
In the present instance and in accordance with the present invention the lower part of the front and back members 1 and 4 are held in assembled position by means of a candle socket 5 provided with tongues 6 and a suitable slot 9 formed in the bottom of the back member 4, the tongue 7 being bent upward against the bottom of the back mem-.
her 4.
The upper part of the front and back members 1 and 4 are held in assembled position by means of a wire handle 10, the bent ends of which are arranged to pass through suitable holes 11 formed in the upper part of the back member 41: and the peripheral band 3 on opposite sides thereof.
The upper ends of the front and back members 1 and a are preferably cut to form a top opening through which a suitable candle 12 can be inserted in the socket 5.
From the above description it will be seen that the front and back members of the lantern can be nested for packing as shown in Fig. 3, so that a large number of lanterns can be packed in very little space,;to save expense in boxing, shipping and storage, which is very important in an article of this type made to sell at a low price.
From theabove description it will also be seen that the parts of the lantern when as sembled are held securely together at the bottom by means of the candle socket and at the top by means of the handle; both the candle socket and the handle being necessary parts of the lantern made in a suitable manner, in accordance with the present invention, to accomplish the additional advantage of holding the separate parts of the lantern together without separate independent means for this purpose.
lVhile the invention has been described with particular reference to the details of construction the same is not to be considered as limited thereto, as many changes can be made and still fall within the scope of the invention set forth in the followingclaim.
What I claim is: A decorative lantern comprising in combination a front member, an outwardly eX- tending peripheral band secured to said front member, a back member arranged to fit over the band on said front member to specification in the presence of two subscribclose said lantern, a candle socket provided ing Witnesses. with means for locking the lower ends of said front and back members; and a handle I VICTOR E. DESSART. 5 provided With means for locking the upper Witnesses:
ends of said front and back members. LEO J. MATTY,
In testimony whereof I have signed this LILIAN POTTER.
