lMPROVEM-ENT IN TACK-PULLERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,837, dated December 23, 15:73; application led September 16, 1873.

To all whom it muy concern Be it known that I, CHARLES W. BLAKEs- LEE, of Plantsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Tack-Puller; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this speciiication, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in device for drawing tacks, as from carpets, and for other purposes, and it consists in a handle or lever terminating in a bill-shaped jaw, combined with a second jaw, pivot-ed and corresponding to the rst, the said second jaw extending from the pvot down so as to form a fulcrum, and up so as to form a handle, by means of which the person drawing the tack may hold the tack within the jaws after it is drawn; also, in the arrangement of the grip- -ing-jaws out of vertical line with the handles or levers, wherebyT the jaws may be vertically set upon a tack-head in close proximity to the wall.

A is the handle, of any suitable construction, terminating in a jaw, a, which is of billshape, and made sharp at the edge. To this jaw a'second jaw is pivoted, at b, the jaws being of corresponding shape. From the pivotthe jaw is extended and turned down, so as to form a fulcrum, as at c,- thence turned up, to form a Enger-lever, B, so that a person, holding the handle A in one hand, may, with the thumb of the same hand, press against the 1ever B and close the jaws, as denoted by the broken lines x, Fig. l.

The jaws open, one set over the head of the tack, as seen in Fig. l, the point c resting upon the floor or other point of the fulcrum. The handle A is pressed down, as denoted in broken lilies, forcing the jaws beneath the head, to gripe the head; then rising upon the fulcrum c, the tack is drawn, as denoted in broken lines. The operator then places his thumb upon. the lever B, to hold the jaws in a closed position on the tack, and is thus enabled to pick up the tack as it is drawn.

In drawing tacks from carpets, it is necessary that the puller be applied very near the wall; and that the n gers of the operator may not interfere with so doing, and to enable him to set the puller vertically upon the tack, the handle and lever are turned to one side, as seen in Fig. 2, so as to carry the jaws out from the vertical line of the handle.

I do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming a puller consisting of a pair of jaws, one of which is extended to form a t'ulcrum, as such is not new.

I claim as my invention- As an article of manufacture, the herein-described tach-puller, consisting of the lever or handle A provided with a jaw, a, combined with a second jaw, d, pivoted to the iirst, and extended to form the fulcrum c and handle B, substantially as specified.
