COATING- R DECORATNG APPARATUS.
Application filed September 2*?, 1919. Serial No. 326,706.
To all wh-0m it may concern.'
a sub`ect of the KinoV of Norwa residing at Drayton Grove, West Ealing, London, England, have invented certain new and -useful improvements in Coating or Decorating Apparatus, of which the following is the specification.
This invention relatesl to apparatus for forming, coating or decorating sweetmeats or other articles or bodies, and it refers to apparatus of the type ,forming the subject of British Letters Patent granted tome under Number 28948 of 1918, in which a number of nozzles are mounted upon a carriage which is capable of motion in all directions and through which nozzles a stream of material, in a more or less viscid state is directed to form or decorate the bodies as the case may b e.
The present inventionhas for its object certain improvements designed kto simplify the construction of machines such as that referred to and which improvements may in part be applied to and used in conjunction with the apparatus forming the subject of the aforesaid British Letters Patent No. 28948 of 1913.
According to the present invention I employ a hopper or container for the material which hopper is somounted and supported that it is capable of universal movement, and which hopper is heated in any convenient manner, ,for example by an electric resistance, in order to leep the contents thereof at a temperature suiiicient to maintain it in the desired liquid or viscid condition. The hopper or container is mounted upon a shaft or spindle which may conveniently be operated by foot power or by means of an electric or other motor and upon which shaft the said container is mounted in a manner such that it may be swung by means of a suitable handle in a plane at a right angle to the line of said shaft ormoved lengthwise thereof. n
The hopper at its lower end'is funnel shaped and has an opening or openings formed therein through which, as will be presently more fully described, the contents may be allowed to escape.
Running along the bottom of the hopper and disposed contiguous to the opening, is a shaft receiving motion by means of belt or other suitable gearing from the spindle from which the hoppermay be suspended.` r.lhe shaft forms a closure for the discharge open-` infy or openings in the hopper and it has formed upon it circumferential channels or grooves which may be of any desired cross sectional outline, and which channels form passages pern'iitting4 the escape of the contents Vof the said hopper, the diameter of the main or unchannelled portion of the spindle being greater thanv the width of the dis` @5 charge opening in the said hopper, said unchannelled portions preventing the passage of the material through'the discharge open; ing.
Provision is made by means of Scrapers for ensuring the removal and discharge of the material from the grooves in the roller, and means is also provided for regulating the amount of material in the grooves of the said roller.
In order that the invention may be the better understood drawings are appended in which l Fig. l is a side view of a machine according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan. v
Fig. 3 is an end view seen from thefout'er end ofthe hopper. n
Fig. et is a view to a larger scaleshowing the inner end of the hopper. 35
Fig. 5 is a view showing the outer end of said hopper. f
Fig. 6 is a side view.
Fig. 7 is a cross section.
Fig, 8 is a. side view showing more clearly one ofthe Scrapers and the support therefor.
Fig. 9 is a plan of the underside of the, hopper. l
Fig. 10 is a plan of the top of the hopper.
Fig. ll is a side view. showing an ar- 9U' rangement whereby (the roller is driven'by foot/power, and
Fig. 12 isa sectional view vshowing `more clearly the arrangement of the brake, lwhereby the speed of motion of the hopper may be controlled.
Referring to rthe accompanying drawings, l indicates a pedestal upon which is adjustably mounted by means of the screws Zand nuts 3, a tubular column 4;. The column el at its upper end is provided with bearings for a shaft 5 provided with the usual fast and loose pulleys indicated respectively by 6 and 7 and upon which shaft are also mounted pulleys 8 whereby motion may be im- 1,10
drum (41C) on shaft 10 and is connected to a pin (41d) projecting from the face of the aforesaid lever (41h).
lt Will be seen from the foregoing description that as motion is imparted'to the shaft 5 it Will be transmitted through chain 18 to the roller 16 Which rotating in the hopper Will convey a certain quantity of the material therein by means of grooves 23 to the outside of the hopper Where it is removed in the form of long narrow strips by the Scrapers 82 and falls upon a table not shown, but disposed beneath the hopper and upon which table the goods to be decorated or coated are placed. At the same time the shaft 38 will be caused to rotate through the pulleys 8, 9 and bevel Wheels 39a and 40. A rocking motion will thus be imparted to the hopper by the rod 36 whereby a pattern or gure Will be produced for ornamenting the goods. 1f desired, one of the pins 35 may be removed whereby a lateral motion may be imparted to the hopper which Will again cause a variation in the pattern or ornamentation produced. Again the rod 36 may be entirely disconnected from the hopper which Will then be stationary or can be operated by hand to produce any desired pattern or ligure. As the speed of motion of the hopper may be controlled by means of brake 41, it is evident that a great variety of patterns or igures may be produced. The handle 26, When the movements of the hopper are hand-controlled, is utilized not only to control the passage of the material from the feed roller but to elfect the movements of the said hopper.
. As already stated, the roller Within the hopper, may be driven by foot power in which case a treadle (44a) may be provided pivotally connected by means of a rod (45) with a band-Wheel or pulley (46) supported from the pedestal (1). Motion is transmitted by a belt (48) from the pulley (46) to a second pulley (47) mounted upon the aforesaid spindle or shaft (5) to which is secured the chain Wheel (18) before referred to, and from Which motion is transmitted by chain (18") to chain Wheel (18a).
Instead of or in addition to means for heating the contents of the hopper, provision may be made for cooling same.
I may if desired provide for the admission of compressed air to the hopper.
