Description

June 12; 1923.
A. H. BACON CUFF BUTTON Filed July 1, 1922 Patented June 12, lQZS.
ALLAN H. BACON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
c'urr Burrow.
Application filed July 1, 1922. Serial No. 572,274.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN H. BACON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Gulf Button, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cufl' buttons.
An object of the invention is to provide a cufl' button of the link type in which the two members or ends of the button are united by an elastic and flexible connection capable of permitting the members or ends of the button to be drawn apart. Another object of the invention is to provide a cuff button of the link type in which the two members or ends of the button are connected by an eXpansible resilient connecting device to permit the cufi or sleeve in connection with which the button is worn to expand.
Other objects will appear from the following description, in which Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a preferred form of my improved cufi' button.
Fig. 2 is a view showing a modification.
As shown in Fig. 1 each end or member 1 of the button has a link 2 pivotally connected therewith so that the ends or members 1 may turn to different relative positions. In the embodiment illustrated each of the links 2 is formed with an eyelet or hook 3 engaging a part 1 of each of the members 1. The opposite end of each link is attached to an abutment 5. The abutments 5 are the ends of the telescoping spring-encasing tubular parts 5*. The abutment 5 attached to each link is slidable on the other link.
A coil spring 6 of the expansion type encircles the two links 1 and 2- between the two abutments 5 and within the telescoping tubular parts 5, the opposite ends of said spring bearing against said abutments. The spring does not contact closely against the links 2 but is preferably of relatively large diameter to permit the connecting device to expand and contract freely and to bend or curve as required in use.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 the spring 7 is of the retractile type having loops or hooks 8 on its ends engaged with parts 9 of the button members 1. Movement of the button members 1 toward each other is limited when the spring 7 is closely contracted; whereas in Fig. 1 movement of the button members 1 toward each other is limited to contact of the abutments 5 against the loops 3 of the links.
I am aware that the construction and arrangement of the device may be varied otherwise than as shown in the drawing, and 1 do not restrict myself in unessential particulars.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is 1. A cull button comprising two end button members, a link pivotally united to one of said members, an additional link pivotally united to the other one of said members, an abutment on the first named link arranged to slide on the second one, a separate abutment on the second link arranged to slide on the first one, and a single coil spring of the expansion type encircling both of said links and pressing against said abutments.
2. A cufi' button comprising two end button members, a link pivotally united to one of said members, an additional link pivotally united to the other one of said members, an abutment on the first named link arranged to slide on the second one, a separate abutment on the second link arranged to slide on the first one, a coil spring of the expansion type encircling said links and pressing against said abutments, and telescoping tubes in connection with said abutments en closing said springs.
3. A cuff button, comprising two end button members, a link pivotally united to each of said members, an abutment in connection with each link and arranged to slide on the other link, and a single coil spring of the expansion type encircling said two links and having its ends bearing against said abutments.
4. A cufi button, comprising two end button members, a link pivotally united to each of said button members, an abutment connected with each link and arranged to slide on the other one, means limiting movement of said abutments toward said button members respectively, and a single coil spring of the expansion type encircling said two links and having its ends bearing against said abutments respectively.
5. A cuff button, comprising two end button members, a link pivotally united to each of said members, an abutment in connection with each link and arranged to slide on the other link, a coil spring encircling said two links and having its ends bearing against neotioii with said gihutments envglqsinig said sprm ton members, each having a recess in its innor side, a part integral with each isgid button, mp isin tweed b fi-H.
ing its opposite ends passing through said geces ses and ground said parts and ,pivotally gpnnecting sg -id-[button \members and arranged to permit said button members to,
turn fi e ely toeny angular position relative to the axis of said spring, and said spring be il ig'arranged and designed to bend freely I throughout its length.
