WILKENS A. SCHENCK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, 'ASSIGNOR TOCHARLEB H. ROBBINS, JR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
T SQUARE.
Application filed July 21, 1922. Serial No. 576,4.4-9.
T (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILKENS A. Sor-rnNon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in T Squares, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in T-squares and it has for its object to provide a novel connection between the blade of the T-square and a reinfording strip therefor.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction of T-square having a reinforcing strip connected and secured to the blade thereof in such manner that bending of the blade and the strip attached thereto may be readily effected without injury to either.
Other objects and advantages of the 1nvention will be pointed out in the detailed description thereof which follows or will be apparent from such description.
In order that the invention may be readily understood reference may be had to the accompanying drawing in which one form of embodiment thereof is shown. However, it will be understood that changes in the details of construction may be made within the so scope of the claims without departing from the said invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a T-square embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the blade thereof taken on the line 2-2 of 1;
Fig. 3 is a view partly in edge and partly in longitudinal section of the T-square; and
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the blade of the T-square in bent or bowed position.
Referring to the drawings: 1 designates the helve or head of the T-square which helve or head consists of any suitable matcrial such as-light metal or wood. The blade comprises the part 2 which may consist of any suitable material, such as celluloid or wood, which is provided with a reinforcing metal strip 3. The portions 2 and 3 are secured to the helve or head 1 by means of screws 4:.
For the purpose of attaching the rein-' forcing strip 3 to the part 2 I have provided the la ter with spaced parallel undercut grooves 5 which extend longitudinally thereof, as is clearly indicated in the drawing. The reinforcing strip 3 is provided with inwardly extending flanges 6 which form acute angles with the intermediate portion thereof and which are in engagement with the undercut grooves 5. Except for the screws 4 the connection of the reinforcing strip 3 with the part 2 is effected entirely by the engagement of the inwardly extending flanges 6 with the undercut grooves 5. The flanges 6 are slidable within the grooves 5 so that there may be relative movement between the reinforcing strip 3 and the part 2. Such relative sliding movement is necessary in order that when the blade is bent either in the direction indicated in Fig. 4 or in the opposite direction there may be relative sliding movement between the two. When bent or bowed in the direction indicated in Fig. 4 it will be noticed that the strip 3 shortens with respect to the part 2 of the blade. If, however, the bending or bowing were in the opposite direction the reverse would be true; that is, the reinforcing strips 3 would project beyond the outer end of the part 2. If the parts 2 and 3 were secured together at their opposite ends or so as to prevent relative slidin movement between the two upon the bending thereof there would be liability of injury to the blade if the same were bent. The part 2 consisting of celluloid, wood, or the like might be fractured or broken or the part 3 might become distorted.
It will be seen that I have provided the blade of a T-square with a reinforcing strip connected thereto in such manner that it performs the necessary stiffening and bracing functions without. however, preventing the bending of the blade should it be desired to bend thesame.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A T-square, the blade of which is provided with a reinforcing strip having fixed connection therewith at one end and slidable connection with the remaining portion thereof.
2. A T-square consisting of a head and a 7 blade which blade comprises a body part and a reinforcing strip which strip is rigidly secured at one end to the said head andto the adj end o s bo y part and is slidably interloeked with the remaining portion of said lbody part.
with respect to each other "and extending longitudinally thereof, and a reinforcing strip therefor having inwardly extending flanges in engagement With sa1d groove-s.
4. A T-square comprisinga head portion.
and a blade ofnon-metalli'c material having undercut parallelspaced groovesupon the top side and extending longitudinally thereof, a reinforcing metal strip 'u'pon the top 7 side of said blade, said strip having in- Wardly and downwardly extending flanges in slidable engagement with the said grooves, and means for securing the said blade and strip to the said head.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereunto signed my 20 name this20th dayof July, A. D. 1922.
