Application filed December 13, 1921. Serial No. 522,072.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN HnMrnILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joliet, in the county of -Will and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Molds for Corncrib Staves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention. relates to a building block or stave particularly designed for use in the construction of corn cribs or analogous structures in which extensive ventilation is necessary, and an object of the invention is to provide a building blockor stave which is adapted to be formed of concrete or analogous plastic material and is designed for inner locking engagement one with another, the said blocks or staves being provided with a plurality of spaced ventilating openings formed therein during the molding of the block or stave.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel type of mold for constructing such building blocks which comprises a stationary form and a plurality of movably mounted cores connected for synchronous movement into the mold for forming the ventilating openings in the block or stave.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

Fig. 4c is a fragmentarv perspective view of one of the building blocks or staves formed by the mold.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the mold structures comprises a pan or body 1 the ends 2 of which are hingedly connected to the bottom 3 in door like construction and held in end forming position by means of suitable latches 4 which are attached to the upper edges of the sides 5 at their ends. Supporting leg 6 are attached to the under surface of the bottom 8 at each end and they rockably support a shaft 7. The bottom 3 is provided with a plurality of spaced openings 8 which receive therethrough the cores 9. The cores 9 are connected for synchronous movement into the pan or body of the mold by spaced longitudinally extending bars 10 and the cores will also be connected to the shaft 7 by chains 11 so that when the shaft 7 is rotated to wind the chains 11 thereon the cores 9 will all 'be drawn out of the mold structure which operation is performed after the concrete or plastic has set sufficiently to permit the cores to be withdrawn without causing disfiguration of the openings. The cores 9 are forced into the mold by cams 14 which are carried by the shaft 7 and are moved to force the cores 9 through the openings 8 when the shaft is rotated in a direction reversely to the chain winding rotation thereof. The shaft 7 has its ends rectangular as shown at 15 for receiving the crank handle to facilitate its rotation. Side strips 16 and 1? are placed within the mold along each. side thereof and the strip 16 has a concave inner surface as shown at 18 while the strip 17 has a convex inner surface as shown at 19 the radii of the concave and convex surfaces 18 and 19 are equal so that the convex edge 20 of one stave or block will fit snugly in the concave block 21 of the block next ihereabove.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings a fragmentary perspective of one of the completed build ing blocks or states is shown and it will be noted that the block or stave as provided is substantially rectangular in shape and has a plurality of openings 23 extending therethrough to permit thorough ventilation of the interior of a completed form of a stave or block.
It will be noted that the sides of the cores 9 taper so as to facilitate their withdraw from the plastic material in the mold.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other manners and the parts associated in other relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In a mold for forming concrete building blocks or staves, a body including a. bottom provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings, a plurality of cores for insertion through said openings, means for connecting said cores, and means for synchronously moving the cores into or out of said mold, strips extending longitudinally along the edges and within said mold, one of said strips provided with a concave inner surface and the other being provided with a convex inner surface.
2. In a mold for forming concrete buildcores for Withdrawing the cores from the mold.
3. In a'mold for forming concrete building blocks or staves, a body including a bottom provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings, supporting legs attached to the under surface of the body at its ends, a shaft rotatably carried by said supporting legs, a plurality of cores for insertion through said openings, and means connecting said cores for synchronous movement, cams on said shaft engaging said cores for forcing them intosaid mold, and chains connected to the shaft and certain of said cores for Withdrawing the cores from the mold, the ends of said. mold bodyv being; hinged to permit Withdrawal of a formed block or stave therefrom.
4.- In a mold for forming concrete buildingblocks or staves, a body including a bottom provided With a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings, supporting'legs attached to the under surface of the body at its ends, a shaft rotatably carried by said supporting legs, a plurality ofcores for ins sertion through said openings, and means connecting said cores for synchronous movement-cams on said shaft engaging said cores for forcing them into said mold, and chains connected totheshaft and certain of saidv cores for Withdrawing the cores from the mold, the ends of'said' mold body being hinged to permit Withdrawal of a formed block or stave therefrom, and strips Within said mold along opposite sides, one of said strips having-a concave inner surface and the other having a convex' inner surface.
