IMPROVEMENT IN TOY PISTOLS OR GUNS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,798, dated December 23, 1873; application filed September 25, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

ie it known that I, GLOVER S. HASTINGS, of Plainville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Guns and Pistols; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the. art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to toy guns or pistols, and the use of parlor or detonating matches, or fire-arrows, in combination with the same; and consists, first, in a gun or pistol so constructed as to be adapted to discharge a common parlor or detonating match, or other arrow having an equivalent explosive substance secured thereto; secondly, in a gun or pistol having the stock made of a single piece of material, the hammer and trigger made of a single piece of material, and pivoted to the stock of the pistol; thirdly, in a gun or pistol having a self-cocking hammer, the trigger of which is made solid with the hammer, and forms a weighted lever; fourthly, in the mode of impelling the stock of a match or arrow, to one end of which detonating-powder is secured, by subjecting the detonating-powder to pressure or concussion within the barrel of a fire-arm, adapted to receive, hold, and guide the match or arrow at any angle, in the manner set forth; fifthly, in the combination of devices, which will be more fully explained upon reference to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a side View of my invention, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of the same.

A is the barrel of the pistol; E, the stockwhich is cast of malleable or common cast iron, and slotted at F, through which the hammer D is inserted, and pivoted at f. The trigger B is cast solid with the hammer D,

and forms a weighted lever, by means of which the hammer is made to be self-cocking. A curved projection, c, is formed upon the back of the hammer D, and limits the. same in its backward movement, so that the trigger B may be within reach of, and easily manipulated by, the operator. Upon the under side and rear end of the bore 0 a projection, h, is formed, and in the rear of which is an angular depression, 6.

The explosive substance upon the end of the match or arrow, being insertedwithin the bore, is forced back over the depression Pressure being then applied to the trigger B, the hammer Dis forced down upon the ignitible end of the match, which moves forward to the point h, where it is firmly held until sufficient power is applied to explode the same, the concussion forcing the match a considerable distance from the pistol.

The hammer may be either made to fit snugly the hole j, as shown, or a guard may be formed upon the barrel or hammer of the pistol, so that all danger of burning the hand by the percussion-powder is avoided.

I do not limit myself to the peculiar construction shown and described, as it is evident that pistols having spring-hammers might be made to be so used; also, revolvers and cannon.

I claim as my invention- 1. A toy pistol, for firing off parlor or other detonating matches, provided with a hammer and trigger, constructed in one piece, and operated by simple lever-pressure, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the barrel and stock,

The. mode herein described of impelling the stock of a match or arrow, to one end of which dctonating-powder is secured, by sub jecting the powder to pressure or concussion within the barrel of a fire-arm, adapted to hold the match at any angle, as it is subjected to pressure, and guide the stock as it is im pelled from the barrel, substantially as shown and described.
