ARM FOR FIRING FULMINATED STICKS.
gFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,601, dated April 24, 1894. Application filed July 12,1893. Serial lie-480,240. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that we, JOHN F. HARDESTY and ROBERT A. SALE, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Firearms; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make-and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to those toy pistols or rifles which are adapted to shoot explosive matches, or a splint provided with a suitable fulminate; and our object is to combine with simplicity a device which will more effectively prevent the gases of the explosive from escaping at the breech, whereby the splint is more forcibly projected.
To this end the invention consists of certain improved mechanism auxiliary to the breech by which the gun is made more effective and all the sparks or smoke made to pass out of the muzzle of the rifle.
Referring to the accompanying drawings fora detailed description, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the improved rifle, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section.
The reference letter A, indicates the stock of the rifle to which is fixed, as usual, the barrel a.
Arranged in the breech B, is the hammer I), provided with the usual or any preferred actuating mechanism. The hammer is adapted to strike at the base of the inner end of the barrel a.
The construction of the barrel Ct, is, as shown in Fig. 2, that of a metallic tube having a longitudinal passage 0, and chamber 0, therein. The chamber and passage are axially coincident. The chamber C, is larger in diameter, and is located at the breech of the barrel. The passage 0, communicates with the front end of the chamber 0, and extends the entire length of the barrel. By reason of the difference between the sizes of said chamber and passage and their relative arrangement, a shoulder D, is formed at the juncture of the two, and serves as an anvil, as will appear hereinafter. By reference to the drawings the chamber 0, of the barrel 0., is much shorter than the passage 0, and the function of the chamber is virtually that of an explosion chamber as will appear fully hereinafter.
Arranged to normally operate'in the pas sage C, is a breech or firing plug d, which serves the double function of exploding the match and sealing the explosion chamber. This plug consists of a metallic pin or stud round in cross section and of a diameter equal to that of the diameter'of the chamber 0, so that it will fit snugly therein, and it is provided with a head E, which is adapted, when the plug is pushed in the passage 0, far enough, to bear snugly against the inner end of the barrel Ct, the plug being long enough to fill completely the passage 0.
In using the invention as a toy rifie the plug d, is first removed and an ordinary match splint, e, is inserted in the barrel at its breech so that the head of the match willbear against the shoulder D, and the body of the match extend into the passage 0. The plug d, is then inserted in its place and pushed gently up until it engages the match. When this has been done the hammer is operated to strike the plug, which pushes it violently up into the chamber or passage 0, as far as it will go, thereby exploding the match head.
When the match explodes it will be impossible for any material quantity of the gases to escape by Way of the breech so that as they expand or proceed out the muzzle the match splint will be carried with them and ejected from the rifle with force enough to impel it a greater distance than has hitherto been customary.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a toy gun, for shooting a fulminated stick, the combination with a barrel having a bore 0 of alarger chamber 0, at the breech of the barrel, and communicating with the bore 0, to form the shoulder D, said chamber being smooth throughout its length, a removable fire plug adapted to snugly fit the chamber, and a head on the plug adapted to close against the end of the barrel in the discharging operation, all arranged and adapted to operate in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof We affix oursignatures in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN F. HARDESTY. ROBERT A. SALE.
