UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORLANDO o. roEsYTH, JE., OE NEwEUEe, NEW YOEK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DUST-FANS.
Specification forming 'part of Letters Patent No. 145,792, dated December 23, 1873; application filed July 5, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORLANDO C. Fonsv'rn, Jr., of Newburg, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and 'useful Improvement in Dust-Pans, of which the following is a speecation:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved dustpan. Fig. 2 is a section of the same taken through the line x zo, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved `dust-pan, which shall be so constructed that it will keep its place upon the ioor whilethe dust is being swept upon it, and will notbe readily bent out of place. The invention consists in the improvement of dustpan handles, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
A represents the body of the dustpan, which is made in the ordinary manner. B is asheetiron plate, the rear edge of which is seamed to the forward edge of the body A, so as to strengthen and stii'en the said edge, and thus guard it from being accidentally bent. O is the handle, made of wire bent together in its middle to form a loop for convenience in hanging up the pan, and which will enable the brush `to be passed into it, so as to be always on hand and ready for use. -The wire below the loop is twisted together and then spread apart, and bent downward, and is secured to the rear side of the pan A by solder, rivets, screws, clamps, or other convenient means. rlhe ends of the wire that forms the handle C project beyond the bottom of the rear part of the pan A, to form legs of such a length as to support the pan in proper position 'for the dirt to be swept into it, and which will at the same time. prevent the dust-pan from being pushed back by the broom when sweeping the dust into it'.
D are rubber feet, which are placed upon the ends of the wire O to prevent the said. wire from tearing the carpet or` scratching the boards or marble of the floor. The handle C projects upward, so that it will not be necessary to stoop in placing the pan upon or removing it from the iioor. The handle and feet D have been described as being made of wire; but they may be .made of sheet metal or cast, as may be desired or convenient.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A dustpan provided with a handle, O, made of wire bent at the middle to form an oblon g end loop, next twisted together, then bent laterally and downwardly to support the rear of pan, in the manner described.
