SAW-FILING DEVICE.
Application filed June 1,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. Masow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of -Alameda'and State of California, have invented new and' useful Improvements in Saw-Filing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to filing devices, and particularly to that class employedffor filing saws other than circular. One of the objects ofthe present invention is to generally improve and simplify devices of the character described, and especially to provide a compact portable saw filing device which may be eiiiciently employed byr any ordinary mechanic without previous instructionsor skill, and'which is adapted to be folded into a compact unit for storage in a tool boX'or the like. f
Another object of the invention is to provide a saw filing device which may be readily attached to a work benchor any other suitable support, and which is .provided witli clamping means for receiving, positioning and rigidly securing the saw to be led. y y
Another object of the invention is to provide a file supporting and guiding frame, and in conjunction therewith means permitting vertical and angular adjustment of the frame and longitudinal movement thereof with relation to the saw,v f
Further objects will hereinafter appear. The invention consists ofthe parts and the'construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described andy claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. l is a plan View 'of' the saw filingdevice.
Fig. 2 is an end View'. f
Fig. 3 is an end View of the iile clamp and adjusting mechanism.
Fig.r e is an enlarged detail plan view'of 1 the sliding support, and the means whereby .i
angular adjustment of the tile on a horizontal plane with relation to the saw is obtained.
Referring to the drawings in detail, and particularly to Figs. l and 2, there is shown a frame consisting of two main clamping sections, suc-h as indicated at 2 and 3. Formed on eachiend'of theclamping section 3 is an upwardly extending bracket 4l, and similarly lformed on eachr end of the clamping section .2 is an upwardly eXtend` 19213 serial No. 474,074.'
ing bracket 5. The .bracket sections 4 and 5- arefpivotally connected at each end as shown at 6 and a clamping lscrew actuated by a thumb-nut 7 also passes through the brackets to draw'r the same, together with the clamping sections 2 andV 3, together whena'saw-,such as shown at 8, is placed between the same. Also formed on eachend of thev 'clamping section 3 is a downwardly extending .bracket 9, and secured thereby in any suitable manner is a guide rod l0 on which is slidablymounted aplate ll. ,The plate vll consists of a single sheet ofinetal bent about the square rod as shown in Fig. l, to form an upper. section ll. and a lower section lla. These sectionsv are substantially yseini-circularSin shape andr they are interspacedto receive a guide arm l2. The arm 121s pivotally mounted between the-plate is. graduated asy at 16 to indicate the angular positionof the arm l2, andthearm may be secured atany .intermediate point between the stops 14, orwheniii engage-'l mentwith thestops by means ofv a clampring screwy 17.: ASlidably mounted on the .guide arm l2 is a frame 18.
One end gof the` frame fits the arm l2 and only has a sliding inovem'entthereon as shown at 19, whilethefopposite end of the frame .has a limited vertical movement with relation to lthe guide arm l2vby elongating-the slotin- -dicated at 2O, thereby permittingthe frame to rock as well ashslide on .the arm l2.
,The yfile proper` shown at -21 is lsecured in the` usual manner ,to a handle 22. This handle however is clamped to the fra-me by passing it through a` rear socket member H23 and byfsecuring it in a clamp mountedfon the vforwardend of the sliding-frame as at 24. This clamp consists of two arms 25 and 26 hingedly connected as at 27. A clamping screw actuated by a thumb nut `28 vpasses through the armsv and thereby permitsthem :to be tightly drawn together to engage the shank of the file. The -iilehowever may. be turned within the clampcto assume anyangular position desired with movement with relation sections 1l and 4l1a as at 13,and an extreme j relation to the teeth oni-the saw, and suchv l,angular adjustment is indicatedby a triangular pointer 29 and a j kgra dulfted dial plate 30.
The main clamp A, consisting of the section-s 2, 3, etc., is so constructed that it may be readily and quickly attached to a Work bench or any other suitable support, that is upper.- surface, thus the clamping section 2 is. provided with a horizontally disposed supportingr flange 3l,r ,adapted to engage.
, theforward face. of the clamping section 1s thev top of a bench, and
provided with one or more pr'ongsA to enter thefront; face of the bench Similarly one ormoreprongs. suchas shown at 33, may be provided which may be driven into,` the rigidly securing the clamp with relationV to the bench or otherwise.
, resem to be and and' as. indienen@ s is insertedv between the clamping sections 1 Zand 3. by first loosening the Wing nuts 7. ,This permits Asufhcient separation of the clamping sections to permit the lsavv to be entered between the same. The-saW-is then liftedjin a vertical direction untill the teeth engage-a pair of aligning- :Eerrulegt construeted of lead or` the like, 'and .which are supported by the clampingl screws carrying thelwing nuts The saw when in engagement vv-ith these ferrules is stoppedagainst further upward movement and will when so engaging the errules `insure correct posi- .the
' teeth when the tion, andbeing-lifted away from theteeth 'when moved `in the other direction; lifting VAoly'the file or freeing the'same with relation J n tioning j j sections"7 which may then be brought together bytightening thev Wing nuts. A file such of the savvbetween the. clamping as shown atl 21 is next inserted betvveen'the clamping sections 23 and 24 and adjustedy by means of the'clamping sectionsQ. and
V26 to present the desired angle Withrelation to the teeth. Angular` adjustment of the varmA 1 2- is alsoobtained to .give the teeth the desired rake and when this` adjustment is secured, arm 12l is locked bymeans of the l'clamping screw 17. Thefile may noW beV grasped by the handle 2Q and pulled across tace oi the teeth; the file engaging the handle is move-d. inone directotheteethduring retractingV movement be- 'ing permitted due, to the fact ,thatfthe slot QOfis elongated 'as shovvn. Each tooth is `lileduntil the desiredfdepth is obtained and the le is advancedjfrom tooth to tooth by slidi l g the plates! 11 and 11@ longitudinally on the rod 10. The plates 11 and 1,1 automatically gripthe guide rodlwhen a cer- V'tain .tooth is being filed. as theedownward" pressure exerted on the lile when tiling also exertsr a pressure onthe guide arm `12. This f arm of coursetends to tilt the plates.V 11 and vl1t1 with relation to the guide rod 10,v and the yplates therefore grip the rod and are therebyheld against. longitudinal movement While a certain tooth is being filed. Howlever the moment pressure4 is released, it is obviousthat sliding movement can be readily i'mpa'rted to the plates or the saw liling frame as a. Whole When the next tooth is to be iiled.
From the foregoing description it can be seen that l have providedr an exceedingly compactand simple savv `filingdevice. First the Idevice as a `Whole f may k be quicklyk att-ached to aworl; Ibench or any other suitable support ;fsecondlyinsertion and clamp.-
care required vdiuingl the filing operation, v
being. that no tooth is tiled too deep. rIfhe saw can be filed from one sidev until completed and it may then be removed andreversed, thus permitting both vsides to b e filed to an identical angle, both in a horizontalv and in a vertical direction; uniformityand e'liicient. cutting qualities being thus obtained.
If it is desired to change the angle. or
rake of the teeth, it isaccomplished.' by mereklyrelea'sing the elamping. screw s 1'? v and yswinging the `guide arm to any angle de siredg similarly. angular adjustment of the file. with relation to the teeth may `be obtained by. adjustment ,of the y screw I28.
Therefore, any resultfdes'ired may, prac-y ticallyspeaking be obtained.
'Whilecertai features otthe presentinvention are more or less specifically illustrated, l Wish it understood that various loro changes in form and proportion may be;
resorted to Within the-scope of the appended claims,- vsimilarly that thevv materials `and finish of the several parts employed may be such as the experience and judgment of the vmanufacturer maydictate or varying uses mayidemand. I e j Y -V y v Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by' Letters Pat- .ent is--.` f. 1. y e,
