Description

J. R. SEES.
REGULATING THE STROKE 0F PISTONS.
No. 14,576. Patented Apr. 1, 1856.
Wn asses:
wyaw WU;-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. SEES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
METHOD OF VARYING THE STROKE OF FEEDING-PUMPS FOR STEAM-ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,576, dated April 1, 1856.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN R. SEES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Regulating the Supply of Water to Steam- Boilers by Regulating the Length of the Stroke of the Piston or Plunger ofa Supply or Force Pump l/Vhile the Same is in M0- tion; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing an intermediate arm or lever between the driving power of the pump and the pump itself with an adjustable block moving thereon to which the pump plunger or piston is attached and by which the stroke of the plunger or piston may be varied as required to give a proper supply of water to the boiler while the pump is in motion.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A in the accompanying drawing represents an eccentric Wheel attached to the shaft of a locomotive engine, B the eccentric rods attached to one end ofand movingthe intermediate arm or lever C, which works on a rock-shaft or pin at its other extremity. To this arm is attached a sliding block D in which the pin is placed to which the pump connection E is aflixed.
F is a lever working in the graduated arc G and connected'with the sliding-block D by the bell-crank H and the rods I, J.
K is the pump plunger or piston rod and L the pump.
By moving the lever F to the extreme left end of the arc G the sliding-block D is raised to the upper end of the arm C, and the pin which is attached to it to work the piston or plunger is brought into line with the center of the rock-shaft or pin upon which it moves, so that the piston or plunger remains stationary. By moving the lever to the opposite end of the arc, the sliding-block is carried down on the arm and the pump plunger or piston then receives its maximum throw. The length of stroke of the pump plunger or piston can thus be adjusted from a minimum to a maximum with great accuracy to supply the necessary amount of water required to feed the boiler while the pump is in motion by the graduated notches on the arc G.
I do not confine myself to the particular arrangement of my improvement described above, as it is equally applicable to pumps attached to locomotive, stationary and marine engines and the arrangement may be varied to meet the different applications of it.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The use of an intermediate arm or lever between the moving power that works a force or sup-ply pump attached to a steam boiler and the pump, with an adjustable sliding bloc-k movable on said arm or lever as herein described or any analogous arrangement substantially the same which will produce the desired effect.
JOHN R. SEES.
