Description

c. REICH UNDERGARMIJNT I June's, 1923.
Filed July 21. 1921 Z v ATTORNEY Patented June 5, 1923.
UNETED ST CELIA REICH, OF BROQKLYN, NEW YORK.
UNDEBGARMENT.
Application filed July 21, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CELIA REIOH, a subject or citizen of Russia, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments; and I do hereby declare the f )llowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to undergarments, and more particularly to a combination undergarment involving a camisole and a novel construction of bloomers.
As ordinarily constructed, bloomers are provided with an elastic or draw-string around their upper marginal edge, and this marginal edge lies, in turn, over the upper proximal end or waistline of the corsets. With the bloomers, it is customary to wear a camisole around the upper portion of the body, this garment being also provided with a. body-encircling elastic at its lower edge. so it will be seen that the adjacent edges of both garments are equipped with elasticbands which may or may not overlap. Then, too, the petticoat has either an elastic or a draw-string, so that when this garment is donned, the elastic or draw-string occupies a position contiguous the elastics of the bloomers and camisole. It will be seen therefore, that when the skirt is adjusted around the undergarments usually worn, a bunching of elastics or drawstrings results, which is unsightly, and very uncomfortable in the warm weather, and also manifestly detracts from the neatness 0f the attire. Even when a petticoat is not worn, there are still two elastics-one on the camisole and one on the bloomers which measurably contributes towards the same disadvantage just recited with respect to unsightlines.
My invention comprises a one piece garment virtually embodying bloomers and a camisole, and while it possesses all of the advantages of the garments when separately worn. it has none of the disadvantages which have been hereinbefore set forth. Specifically, the invention consists of a one piece combination comprising an upper portion which may be likened unto a conventional camisole and an integral lower portion which may be properly styled as bloomers. The bloomers are bifurcated for a suitable Serial No. 486,432.
distance along the longitudinal seam upon diametrically opposite sides which results in the formation of a rear flap-like portion having its upper free edge provided with a waist-encircling elastic the front half of which may be easily and quickly lowered, so as to in turn lower the flap-like portion to 'any point when it is desired to use the garment. Additionally, the camisole portion carries a pair of shoulder straps, preferably formed from any suitable elastic, and tending to maintain the proper position of the garment in its entirety, as respects the body.
To the accomplishment of the recited objects, and others co-ordinate therewith, the preferred embodiment of my invention resides in the arrangement and construction of the parts shown in the accompanying drawings, hereinafter described, and embraced within the scope of the appended claim.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a figure showing the application of my garment.
Figure 2 is a similar view illustrating a partially lowered position of the bloomers;
and
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the garment.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the lower portion or bloomers, and 2 the upper portion or camisole of the one piece combination. As clearly seen in Figures 1 and 2, the bloomers l are bifurcated from the top downwardly to a point just short of the center of the length of the le sections. these bifurcations 3 being upon diametrically opposite sides and normally lying in juxtaposition to the hips of the wearer. This results in the formation of a flap l at the rear of the bloomers, the upper free edge of the flap carrying an elastic 5 fixed thereto at this point, and encircling the front portion of the waistline. This elastic serves to normally hold the flap 4 in parallelism with the bottom of the camisole 2, which is also preferably equipped at its rear with a semi-circular elastic 6. 'hen it is desired to use the garment, that is. to separate the flap 4 from the rear of the camisole, it is simply necessary to grasp the front portion of the elastic and lower it about the abdomen to the desired point. The initial part of this adjustment is clearly exhibited in Figure 2 of the drawings where the space between the two elastics 5 and 6, and the bulge of the flap 4: may be readily seen.
In order to insure the proper adjustment of the entire garment on the body, and to resist the possibility of either of the integral portions thereof from becoming displaced or working up and down, I use the elastic shoulder straps 7.
As hereinbefore pointed out, my invention embodies all of the advantages and posseses none of the disadvantages of the separate garments conventionally known as bloomers and camisole. The multiplicity of elastics is done away with, the body is thoroughly protected and covered, and at the same time, the garment can be used and readjusted whenever the occasion requires.
It should be understood that in its broader aspect the invention comprehends the employment not only of the various means described, but of equivalent means for performing the recited functions. It is desired to reserve the right to efl'ect such modifications as might fairlycome within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A one-piece garment comprising a pair of bloomers and a camisole, the rear portion of the bloomers being separated from the adjacent portion of the camisole and bifurcated along the hip lines vertically to pro-' vide a flap, the upper edge of the flap carrying a body-encircling elastic band while the lower rear marginal edge of the camisole is provided with an elastic band extending from one bifurcation to the opposite bifurcation, that portion of the marginal edge which extends forwardly being inelastic.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
oELi-A REICH.
