WINDOW-CONTROL MECHANISM.

Be it known that I, ARTHUR R. PRICE, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Detroit, in the county of W'ayne and tate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Control Mechanism, of which th following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
' This invention relates to window control mechanisms, and relates more particularly to control mechanisms for vertically sliding window members such as are commonly em loyed on automobiles and other vehicles.
t is the object of the invention to provide a control mechanism for vertically sliding window members employing a cable as the primary actuating element, the arrangement of the cable being such as to positively eiiect either an upward or downward adjustment of the window member.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is hereinafter described and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is an interior view of an automobile door showing the improved control mechanism applied to a window member vertically slidable in said door;
Figure 2 is a similar enlarged view of said mechanism;
Figure 3 is a vertical cross-section on line 3--3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4. is a fragmentary interior view of the door showing the actuating handle for the control mechanism and the latch means amociated therewith;
Figure 5 is a cross section on line 5-5 of F1gure'3, showing the mounting of certain sheaves in the bottom portion of a chamber formed in said door.
In these views the reference character A designates an automobile door having in its upper portion the window opening B, and provided with. a closure for said opening having the nature of a vertically slidable .glass plate C adapted in its lowered or open osition to enter a chamber D formed in the ower portion of said door. To the inside of the door A, just below the opening B, there is secured a plate E forming a mounting .for certain parts of the control mechanism. Thus a bearingmember F and a ring G are centrally secured to opposite sides of said plate by clamping screws H engaging said caring and ring. In said bearing member there is journaled a shaft 1, and upon said shaft'there'is mounted fast within the chamber D a large sheave J having its rim formed with a helical roove J making a considerable number 0 turns on said rim. In the bottom portion of the chamber I) there is secured a. bracket K upon which two spaced sheaves L and L are journaled. To the lower edge of th window member C there is secured a bracket M upon which two co-axial sheaves N and N are journaled, the
last mentioned sheaves engaging between the sheaves L and L in. the lowermost position of the plate C. Upon the plate E above the large sheave J there is journaledanother small sheave 0. Upon said sheaves is mounted a cable one end of which is anchored upon the plate E, as indicated at P, said cable being extended as indicated at R from the point P to the sheave N, passing under said sheave and then being extended upwardly as indicated at R to the sheave 0. After passing over the sheave G the cable extends downwardly as indicated at R and makes a number of turns R in the groove J of the sheave J. The cable is then extended downwardly as indicated at R and is first passed under the sheave L then over the sheave N, then under the sheave L and finally upwardly as indicated at R to a coiled spring S which attaches the cable to the plate E. Adjacent the inside of the door A there is secured to the shaft I, by means of a bolt T, a handle member U, and a latch element V controlled by a rocker arm V on the handle 'U is 'engageable with a series of notches WV peripherally formed in window member, a spiral spring Z is coiled within the sheave J, said spring being terminally secured respectively to the rim of said sheave and to the ring G. Said spring is tensioned to urge said sheave rotatively in a direction to lift the window member with a force substantially equal to the weight of said member. Thus said spring decreases the tendency of the window member to lower due to vibration and also decreases the effort required to effect an upward adjustment of the window member.
In the operation of the described mechanism when the sheave J is actuated in the 95 j usted. To counterbalance the weight of said direction of the arrow, (see Figure 2), the
portion R of said cable winds on to said sheave and the-portion R is wound 011'. Thus as the window member is raised from the position shown in Figure 2, owing to the tension of the portion R of the cable, the loop formed by the portion of the cable passing over the sheave N is correspondingly increased in length and prevents the production of any slack in the cable.
To lower the window member a reverse rotation is imparted to the sheaveJ so as to wind the portion R of the cable upon said sheave, and unwind the portion R Thus there is exerted a down pull upon the loop of the cable passing over the sheaveN, and the window member is thus lowered and the length of the loop formed by the pertions R and R of the cable is at the same time correspondingly increased through winding off from the sheave J of the'portion R of the cable.
The construction is an exceedingly simple one and operates absolutely without noise. In case there is any tendency for the cable to slacken due to the strain of continued use, such slack will be taken up by the coiled sprin S. It is preferred to rigidly secure one o the turns R of the cable to the sheave '30 J so as to positively insure against any sliption of the cable is coiled, one of the coils of said cable being secured to said driving sheave, actuating means for said sheave, a
pair of spaced sheaves in the bottom portion of said chamber under which portions of said cable are looped, a pair of axially aligned sheaves mounted upon the window member over one of which a portion of said cable islooped intermediate the loops engaging said sheaves in the bottom portion of said chamber, a portion of the cable being looped under the other sheave on said win- 'dow member, said sheaves upon the window member being engageable between said sheaves in the bottom portionof said chamher in the lower limiting position of said I window member.
