To allwhom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW KENDEGHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga'and State of Ohio, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Locks (Case C), of which the following is, a specification.
This invention relates to permutation locks and is an improvement upon Patent No. 1,415,651, granted to me May 9, 1922.
An object of the present invention is the provision of a permutation lock which includes a plurality of indicia carrying members for controlling the operation of 'a locking bolt and novel means for holding the indicia carrying members in position topermit of the release of the bolt. together with means for rearranging the relative positions of the indicia carrying members to change the lock combination. I With theabove and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.

' The bottom' of the casing-22 is provided with a central opening; and extending through this opening is a hollow cylindrical post 28 which is open at one end and has its other end provided with an annulariflange 29 for engagement against the bottom face of the casing 22. Mountedupon the post 28 within the casing 22 is a collar 30 having a radially extending lug 31 projecting from 1 its outer periphery. The lug 31 is adapted to engage a locking bolt 32 whichis mounted for slidin movement through the casing 22 and: whic isprovided with a reduced'extension 33. This extension operates-through f an opening 34 provided in the plate 23 and is adapted to enter 'orl engage a-suitable keeper (not shown) securedto'the adjacent face ofthe stationary member-21. The hollow cylindrical post 28 extends beyond the outer annulus and has threadedly secured thereon a cap 47, the latter being provided with an indicia carrying beveled flange 48, which co-operates'with tjhe indicia carrying rings 43. The cover plate 24 is proylded with graduations or numbers arranged 1n semi-circular form about the inner ring 43 as shown at 49 in Figure 1 and when the proper indicia, that is, the numbers or graduations upon the rings 43 and the prop er letter or graduation upon the cap 47 are aligned with the proper number or gradua- I 4 notches 39, 45 and the slot 46 will be in register. The purpose of this is to permit the post 28. the rings 43-and the annuli 40 to be locked together for a simultaneous rotary movement v v dog 37 to permit the operation of the bolt 32. This is effected by means ofa radially movable member 50. whose 'outer edge is normally positioned; within the slot 46, but which is adapted to be projected through the slotto engage the notches39 and 45 to lock the'parts together and to force the bill of the dog 37 out of the notch 39. The radially movable member 50 is provided upon its inner edge with inclined cam surfaces 51 which normally contact withsimilar surfaces52 provided upon the periphery of a'member 53 which is located within the hollow cylindrical post 28 and which is movable axially of said post. The inclined cam surfaces 52 of the member 53 are of annular formation, so that the said member 53 may be rotated. A guide pin 54 extends into the hollow cylindrical post 28 and enters a guids opening 55 extending inwardly from the inner end of said member 53. The latter extends throughan opening in the cap 47 and is provided with an operating knob 56, while a collar 5'7 is threaded upon the member 53 to limit the outward movement of the latter. The member 50 is held longitudinally centered on the member 53 by means of a spring 57 which extends through an opening 58 provided in said member 50.
After the slot 46 and notches 39 and45 have been moved into register in the man ner previously explained, the member 53 may be moved axially from the position shown in Figure 3 to the position shown in Figure 4 so as to project the member 50 radially to lock the parts together and move the dog 37 out of engagement in the notch 39. whereupon the cap 47 may be rotated to rotate the collar '30 and move the locking bolt from the position shown in Figure 5 to the position shown in Figure 6. Afterthe locking bolt has been again moved to look ing position, the member 53 may be moved inward to permit of the retraction of the radially movable member 50, whereupon the indicia carrying members may be indepencb ently rotated and operation of the lock prevented except by persons familiar with the combination. The cap 47 is milled or serrated as shown in Figure 2 to facilitate rotation, while the locking rings 44 are likewise milled or serrated.
The combination lock may be changed by releasing the rings 43 and rotating the same so as to bring a different number or division opposite the notches 45.
Located within the casing 22 are spaced stationary contacts 59, which are adapted to be engaged or secured to conductor wires (not shown) passed through openings 60 provided in the casing. The contacts 59 are arranged in pairs and may be included in separate circuits connected to signals or alarms at different places. The collar 30 has extending partly around its outer periphery an arcuate shaped insulating flange 61, which carries spaced spring contact arms 62. These contact arms are adapted to bridge the stationary contact members 59 for the purpose of closing the circuit within which these members-are included.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is here in reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention whatis claimed is 1. A permutation lock comprising a casing, a locking bolt operating therein, a hollow cylindrical member mounted for rotation within the casing and extending beyond one wall thereof, a collar mounted for rotation within the casing upon the hollow cylindrical member, means for holding the collar against movement, means for operatively connecting the latter and the locking bolt, whereby rotation of the collar will operate the bolt, a plurality of indicia carrying mem bers mounted for rotation upon the hollow cylindrical member upon the outside of the casing, means including an operating knob, whereby all of the indicia carrying members may be locked together and means whereby the indicia carrying member locking means will release the collar holding means to per-- mit of the operation of the locking bolt.
2. A permutation lock comprising a casing, a locking bolt operating therein, a hollow cylindrical member mounted for rotation within the casing and extending beyond one wall thereof, a notched collar mounted for rotation within the casing upon the hollow cylindrical member, a spring actuated dog engageable within the notched collar to hold the latter against movement, means operatively connecting the collar and locking bolt, whereby rotation of said collar will operate the bolt, a plurality of indicia carrying members mounted for rotation upon the hollow cylindrical member upon the inside of the casing, means including anoperating knob, whereby all of the indicia carrying members may be locked together and means whereby the indicia carrying member locking means will engage and operate the'spring actuated dog to release the collar and permit of the operation of the locking bolt.
3. A permutation lock comprising a casing, a locking bolt operating therein, a hollow cylindrical member mounted for rotation within the casing and extending beyond one wall of the latter, a collar mounted for rotation within the casing upon the hollow cylindrical member, means for holding the collar against movement, means operatively connecting the collar and the locking bolt whereby rotation of said collar will operate the bolt, a plurality of indicia carrying members mounted for rotation upon the hollow cylindrical member upon the outside of the casing, each of said members comprising a flanged annulus, an indicia carrying ring adjustable upon the collar, a clamping ring threadedly engaging the annulus to frictionally hold the indicia carrying ring in position, means including an operating knob, whereby all of the indicia carrying members may be locked together and means whereby the indicia carrying member lockingmeans will release the collar holding means to permit of the operation of the locking bolt;

A permutation lock comprising a casing, a locking bolt operating therein,,a hollow cylindrical'member mounted'for rota tion within the casing and extending beyond one wall thereof, a collar mounted for rotation within the casing upon the hollow cylindrical member, means for holding the collar against movement, means ope'ratively connecting the collar and the locking bolt, 30 whereby rotation of the collar will operate the bolt, a plurality of indiciacarrying members mounted for rotation upon the hollow cylindrical member upon the outside of the casing, each of said members comprising a flanged annulus, an indicia carrying ring adjustable upon the annulus, a clamping ring e threadedly engaging the annulus to frictionally hold the indicia carrying ring in position, means including an operating knob,
whereby all of the indicia carrylng members may be locked together, means whereby the operating knob will prevent adjustment of the indicia carrying ring when the latter is" in locked position and means whereby the indicia carrying member locking means will release the collar holding means to permit of the rotation of the locking bolt.

A permutation lock comprising a casing, a locking bolt operating therein, a hollow cylindrical member .mounted for rotationwithin the casing and extending beyond I one wall thereof, a collar mounted for rota+ tion within the casing upon the hollow cylindrical member, means for holding the 001- lar against movement, means "operatively connecting the collar and the locking bolt, whereby rotation of said collar will operate the bolt, .a plurality of indicia carrying members mounted for rotation upon the hollow cylindrical member upon the outside of the casing, a radially movablemember engageable with the indicia carrying members for locking the latter together, an axially movable operating member and cam engaging surfaces between the operating member and radially movable member, whereby move ment of the former will operate the latter to release the collar holding means and permit of the operation of the locking bolt.
