Description
A. C. SMITH.
Uultivators.
N0, 145,691l Patented Dec. 16,1873'v UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
-ARTHUR C. SMITH, OF FAYETTEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTWATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,691, dated December 16, 1873 application fil-ed September 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ARTHUR G. SMITH, of Fayetteville, in the county of Cumberland and in the State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gultivators; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
'My invention relates to the combining or connecting two or more plows into one implement by certain braces or couplings', as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and n three plows to be connected together as one implement for any purpose that may be desired; but I do not confine myself to this nu1n ber, as two plows only may be connected together, or more than three, if so-desired, the connections being precisely the same between any two adjoining plow-beams. Then three plows are united, as shown in the drawing, bot-h handles B B are left on the middle plow, but only one on each of the side plows. The four handles B B are connected by a crossba-r, E, and the front ends of the beams A A by a cross-bar, H, to which latter the team is to be attached. Two adjoining plows are oonnected in the following manner: D D represent two braces, which pass diagonally from at or near the front ends of the beams A A back to the upper parts of the opposite han dles B B, and connected with said beams and handles either directly or by staples, links, or other suitable devices, as desired. G G represent two braces, which pass diagonally from at or near the rear ends ofthe beams A A, or from the plow-handles near the rear ends of the plow-beams, upward to the upper parts of the opposite handles. Theplow-beams A A are connected, near their ends, with hinged or linked rods a a, to keep the plows at a proper distance apart. The beams are further connected by braces J J, which pass diagonally from the front ends of the beams to the rear ends of the opposite beams, and connect with the rods a a. All the braces D D, G G, and J J are made in two or more parts, and provided with shackles b b to make them longer or shorter, as occasion may require.
By this'means of connecting two or more plows into one implement they are held in the desired position, and the plows can readily be detached from each other when it is desired to use either singly. In some cases it may, perhaps, not be necessary to use all the three sets of braces, and I do not, therefore, confine myself exclusively to such combination.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an implement consisting of two or more plows, the combination of the diagonal braces D D, connecting the front parts of the beams with the upper parts of opposite handles, and the diagonal braces G G, connecting the upper and lower parts of opposite handles, substantially as herein set forth.
2. In an implement consisting of two or more plows, the combination of the diagonal braces D D, connecting the front parts of the beams with the upper part-s of opposite handles, and the diagonal braces J J, connecting the front and rear ends of opposite plow-beams, substantially as herein set forth.
3. In an implement consisting of two or more plows, the combination of the diagonal braces D D, connecting the front parts of the beams with the upper parts of opposite handles, the diagonal braces G G, connecting the upper and lower parts of opposite handles, and the diagonal braces J J, connecting the front and rear ends of opposite beams, all substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of August, 1873.
ARTHUR GSMITH. IVit-nesses:
It. W.HARD1E, S. A. BALDWIN.
