IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES F OR DETACHING HORSES. i

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,662, dated December 16, 1873; application filcd July 14, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

-Be it known that I, ISRAEL L. LANDIS, of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Device for Detaching Horses from Vehicles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for detaching horses from whiffletrees, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view of a whitfletree with my device attached thereto. Figs. 2 and 3 are sections of the same.

A represents a whiffietree, having at each end a pin, a, upon which the end of the trace is to be placed, and around each end of the whiflietree is a ferrule, b, as shown. B represents a metal plate, provided with a longitud inal slot, 6, placed against the end of the whiffletree, the pin a projecting through the slot 6. At the rear edge of the whiflietree the plate B is bent outward and then forward, as shown at d. The other (front) end of the plate B has an arm, f, extending inward, and the extreme end of said arm is bent toward the whiffletree. The plate B is, by

means of a spring, 0, connected with and at tached to a collar or ferrule, h, placed a suit able distance from the end around the whifflet-ree, or to an arm, h, extending inward from the ferrule b on the rear side of the whiffletree. A cord, on, is attached to the end of the arm f on the plate B, and passed around a staple or roller, t, at the end of the whiflietree, and then through a staple at the center of the same. When the trace is put on the pin a, the spring 0 holds the plate B in such a position that the end (1 thereof bears against the end of the pin a, and prevents the trace from slipping off. By pulling upon the cord m, the plates B are thrown outward, the main parts of the plates pushing the traces ofi' from the pins a a. The bent end of the arm f acts as a stop against the staple or roller 6 for the outward movement of the plate B.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the whiffletree A, having a ferrule, 11, and pin a at each end, the plates B,with slots 0, outward-projecting bars d, and arms f, formed of one piece and con nected to the springs O, which are attached to the whiffletree, all constructed substantially as set forth.
