Application filed August 19, 1920. Serial 1%.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, OMER M. GLUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rutherford, in the county of Bergen, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk Stands for Hand Telephones, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to desk stands for hand telephones. its general object is to provide a new and improved form of desk stand adapted to support a hand telephone having an ungrooved handle portion instea or the grooved handle portion which has heretofore generally been used in hand telephones which are intended to be supported on desk stands.
T he invention is vision of a cradle tions adapted to engage the receiver an transmitter portions of the hand telephone and hold the latter from longitudinal movement in the cradle.
The drawing illustrates in perspective a desk stand embodying the invention, and a. hand telephone or" a form suitable for use therewith. The invention is shown as applied to a desk stand provided: with an impulse transmitter and adapted for use in connection with an automatic telephone system; but it is, of course, equally applicable to a desk stand intended for use with a manual or auto-manual telephone system.
Referring to the drawing, the desk standbase i is shown as supporting an impulse transmitter 2 and a short upwardly project, ing standard 3. Arranged for limited vertical movement within the standard 3, is a of which the cradle is secured characterized by the prohaving projecting porrod to the top by a spherical-headed nut 4. Said rod cooperates with suitable contact springs (not shown) within the base 1, which control the connection of the telephone to the line in the usual manner, it being understood that the weight ot the hand telephone is sutficient to hold the cradle and rod in its lower position against the force of the spring which moves the cradle and rod to its upper position when the hand telephone is removed l'rom the cradle.
the particular embodiment shown, the
1 outer surfaces cradle which receives the hand telephone, comprises forked arms 5 and 6 provided with projecting portions 7 and 8. lNhen the hand telephone is supported in the eradle, the projecting portions 7 and. 8 are adjacentthe edges of the receiver portion 9 and the transmitter portion 10 of the hand telephonewhich has an ungrooved handle portion 11. It is obvious that with this term of cradle no vcryaccurate placing of the hand telephone is necessary during the initial part of its movement into the cradle, bewuse the horizontal distance between the of the forked arms 5 and 6 less than the shortest distance between the edges of the receiver 9 and the transmitter 10, and because the projecting portions 7 and 8 of the cradle engage the receiver and the transmitter portions or the hand telephone and guide tie is considerably 1 latter to its final seating position. The
hand telephone is thus held from longitudinal movement in the cradle, and] makes unnecessary any grooves in the handle portion for engaging with the arms of the cradle.
The drawing shows the hand telephone connected with the desk stand by the usual conductor 12, and shows the conductor 13 which connects the instrumentto the telephone line.
It is, or course, obvious that the form and construction of the cradle may be varied to a considerable extent without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
at is claimed is:
In combination, a hand telephone having receiver. and transmitter portions and an ungrooved handle portion between said receiver and transmitter portions, and a desk stand provided with a cradle adapted to receive the handle portion of the hand telephone and provided with projecting portions arranged to engage the receiver and transmitter portions of the hand telephone and hold the latter from longitudinal movement in the cradle.
In witness whereof, ll hereunto subscribe my name this 31st day or July, A. D. l92tl.
@MER M. GLUN'Z.
