JOHN OLOF LINDEN, F ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO.
MASSAGE DEVICE.
To @ZZ whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN O. LINDEN,
a citizen 0f the United States, and a resident of Albuquerque, in the county of Bernalillo and State of New Mexico, have invented a new and Improved Massage Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in massage devices, particularly to devices of the general character disclosed in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1380986,
issued to me on June 7 1921, and in my copending application, Serial No. 492,080. An object of this invention is to provide a massage device adapted to receive temperature regulating agents and to provide means for protecting the hands of the user from being injured by the temperature regulating agents.
A further object is to provide a massage device of simplicity and durability in construction, which will be en'icient in use, which may be cheaply manufactured, and which will be neat and attractive in appearance.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved massage device with the parts broken away for clearness.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device with the parts broken away for clearness.
Figure 3 is a view in transverse section on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, my improved device comprises a substantially oval-shaped, cup-like receptacle 1. The open upper end of the receptacle may be closed by a chambered cover, such as 2. The cover 2 is formed in two pieces, the cover bottom 3 being bent to provide a peripheral channel, such as 4f, in which a gasket 5 is located. This gasket may be either of cork, rubber, or other suitable material.
The cover top 6 is spaced from the intermediate portion of the cover bottom 3 and is permanently secured to the upwardly presented channeled periphery of the bottom 3. The two cover sections may be joined in any approved manner such as welding, soldering', or riveting.
The gasket 5 rests upon the upper edge of the container 1 and the upper cover section 6 is formed with flaring beaded edges 7 which depend and embrace the upper end of the receptacle.
A depending apron 8 is made integral with the upper cover 6 at e-ach side of the container. The aprons are slitted as indicated at 9, and bent outwardly as shown at 10, to receive outstruck lugs 11 formed in the sides 0f the container 1. The lugs 11 project into the offset portions 10 of the aprons and are engaged by the portions of the aprons located below the slits 9 to positively lock the cover in positie-n on the receptacle.
It will be noted that the yupper cover section 6 and the aprons 8 are spaced from the walls of the receptacle throughout their entire length. The cover sections 6 and 3 provide between them an air or vacuum chamber 12 whichl prevents the transmission of heat or cold through the cover.
In using the device the container 1 is filled with temperature regulating agents and the user grasps the two aprons 8 with his thumb and fingers, the palm of his hand resting upon the cover 6. By virtue of the construction abovedescribed, the massage device may be used without discomfort t0 the hands and without danger of spilling the contents of the container, the'bottom 13 of which forms a massaging surface.
Although I have illustrated one of the preferred embodiments of the invention, it will be apparent that various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A massage device, comprising an open top receptacle, and a chambered cover closing said receptacle, said cover being locked to the receptacle and provided at its sides with means for protecting the hands of the user.
2. A massage device, comprising an open top receptacle, a chambered cover closing said receptacle, and depending aprons carried by the cover and spacedl om opposite sides 'of thecontainei", said a'prons serving to protect the hands of the user.
3. A massage device, comprising an' open top receptacle, a chambered cover closing said receptacle, depending aprons carried by the cover andspaced from opposite sides of the container7 andimeans integral with the container engageable with the aprons to prevent removal ofthe cover.
4. In a massage device, an open top receptacle, a hollow cover normally closing saidl receptacle, said cover includinga lower section bent to provide a peripheral channel7 a gasket inthe channel bearing yagainst the upper edge of the receptacle', and an upper cover section secured to the periphery of thel first-mentioned'section and spaced from 'the intermediate'portion thereof.
Y5 In* a massage device, an open top receptacle, a hollow cover normally closing said'receptacle, said co'verincluding a lower 'section bentto'providea peripheral channel, agasket in the channel'bearing against'the uppered'ge of the receptacleyan upper cover section secured to the' periphery of the irst mentioned section and spaced from thel in.- vterinediatel portion thereof, and' depending 'aprons integral with: the upper cover section and spaced from opposite .sides of the container.
6. In a massage device, an open top receptacle, a hollow cover normally closing said receptacle, said cover including a lower section bent to provide a peripheral channel, a gasket in the channel vbearing against the upper edge of the receptacle, an upper cover section secured to the periphery of the firstmentioned section and spaced from the intermediate portion-thereof, depending aprons integral with the upper cover section and spaced from opposite sides of the container, outstruck lugs formed in the walls ofthe container, andy means associated with the aprons engageable with the lugs to lock the double cover in position 7. A massage device, comprising an oblong receptacle, a cover having an air space therein and providedl at two opposite sides with y aprons extending downwardly in spaced relation to the sides of the receptacle, and interlocking means on the receptacle and aprons for locking the cover on the receptacle.
S. In a massage device, a receptacle hav-V ing outwardlyexten'dedy lstruck-up lugs on opposite si'des,'and a cover for said receptacle havingatv opposite sides apronsexten'ding downwardly in spaced relation to the sides of the receptacle and having olset portions engaging the lugs of the receptacle.
