T all whom it may LOIZCEI'H Be it known that 1, CHARLES GOODOHILD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oakland, county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and useful Means for Holding the Stationary Element of a Coaster Brake, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for fastening the stationary element of a coaster brake such as is used on bicycles or the like, to the frame of the vehicle.
An object of the invention is to provide means of the character described which are both effective and unobstrusive.
Another object of the invention is to provide means of the character described which will prevent the spreading of the fork tips of the vehicle frame. I
A further object is to enable the device to be readily attached to known types of coaster brakes.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the showing made by the said drawings and description, as I may adopt variations of the preferred form within the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims.

The device is here illustrated in connection with a well known type of coaster brake, but it is to be understood that the principle involved in the means of my invention may be readily incorporated with other types. As here shown the structure comprises a coaster brake E2 in which is contained the brake element 3 that is adapted to expand against the opposing brake ele- 1921. Serial No. 459,341.
ment 4 formed by the inner face of the hub shell 6. As the shell 6 is the rotating e1ement, means must be provided for holding the element 8 against rotation so that when the latter is expanded the proper friction between both elements may be provided. In the type of brake illustrated in the drawings the element 3 is secured to the bearing cone 8 and the latter is adapted to be fastened to the frame 9 of the vehicle, thereby causing the element 3 to be held stationary. The exposed end 11 of the cone is usually formed with a ratchet face 12, which prior to the present invention, was adapted to be rigidly clamped and locked against the fork F tips 1.3 and 14 of the vehicle frame 9 by the nut 16 which engages the threaded end 18 of the wheel axle 19. Since when the brake is functioning. the turning effort of the cone is considerable, a slight looseness of the cone will cause it to turn, thus causing the ratchet teeth to gradually but continually cut away the inner face of the fork tips. In accordance with my invention the foregoing feature is eliminated, the tips being prevented from becoming mutilated, and the cone at the same time held effectively locked thereto. in the preferred embodiment I provide a retaining member or plate 21 which is formed with a central aperture 22 so that the plate may he slipped over the axle. The plate is arranged to be interposed between the fork tips and the cone, one side of the plate being formed with a ratchet face 24 which corresponds to and is arranged to engage the ratchet face of the cone. Extending outwardly from the oppo site edges of the plate is a. pair of arms 26 which are arranged to straddle the tips and thereby lock the plate and consequently the cone and element 3 against rotation. The arms are comparatively small and when the nut clamps the tips against the plate the end of the arms lie about flush with the outer surface of the tips; it will thus be seen that the plate together with the arms are very inconspicuous.
Since the arms are arranged to tightly overlie or straddle both tips, the latter although being separated at one end; are prevented from spreading even when subjected to extremely rough usage.
