Description

May 22, 1923.
V. V. MOORE SEWING ACCESSORY Filed May 16. 1922 ,Tnven tor Vesfa/foore Patented May 22, i223.
VIRGINIA VESTA oons, or os ntennas, onn ronmn,
snwme ACCESSORY.
Application filed May 16,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I VIRGINIA VnsrA MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewing Accessories, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a holder device for spools of cotton, etc., and'has for its object to provide a very simple and inexpensive form of spool holder combining a safety pin providing for the ready attachment of the holder to the wearing apparel of the person having to use the thread wound on the spool, and to provide also a thread eye or guide.
Other objects will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment 22 of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective of the device.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device showing a spool applied thereto.
Fig. 3 is an edge or end view of Fig. 2.
In the present invention a spool of cotton or other material is adapted to be conveniently carried on the person by means of a holder consisting of substantially parallel side arms 2 having at remote ends short inturned spindle forming stubs 3 which are axially aligned. The arms 2 have upper axial extensions 4 converging toward parallel shanks 5. These shanks are securely fastened in close and parallel position by a simple and inexpensive means consisting of a shell or tubular structure 6, the lower end of which is disposed close to the bends or elbows joining the extensions l and the shanks 5 of the arms.
One of the shanks 5 has a short transverse bar 5 contiguous to the upper end of the tube or casing 6 and thisbar is bent to form a thread eye or guide 7 from which is extended radially a cross bar 8 projecting beyond the opposite side of the casing 6 and being provided with a hook 9 disposed in a plane transverse to the axis of the casing 6.
The other shank 5 is extended beyond the end of the casing to form one bow 10 of a safety pin like device having a resilient coil 11 at the upper end of the bow 10 and from which coil extends the pin part 12 which is of such length that its sharpened end can be 1922. Serial No. 561,299.
sprung into and clear of the retaining hook 9.
In use of the device, the holder is adapted to be pinned in any suitable position to wearing apparel, or to any other primary support, as, for instance, to a table cover or cushion. A spool of material may be readily attached by springing arms 2 sufficiently to spread the spindle parts 3 relatively and enable the entrance of these spindles in the usual spool hole, as shown in Fig. 2. An end of the thread on the spool can be carried up through the guide eye 7 as is clearly shown.
From the above it will be seen that the present device is constructed of essentially but two pieces of wire of suitable strength and of such simple bent up form as to provide for the construction of the instrument at small cost. This is by virtue of the fact that the principal members of the support are of straight wire portions as, for instance, thestraight wire side arms 2 with the straight extensions 4: having the straight shanks 5, all of which may be quickly and inexpensively produced. The straight shanks can be rigidly fastened in parallel position by the encasing shell or casing 6 which may be of simple sheet metal wrapped around the parallel bars and then securely closed down and, if desired, fastened as by solder.
Various modifications and changes may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A spool holder comprising a pair of shank members provided with spool hooking end portions, one of the shanks having a thread guide at one end, the other shank being provided with a safety pin portion, and means for fastening the shanks in sub stantially closed parallel position.
2. A spool holder comprising a pair of shank members provided with spool hooking end portions, one of the shanks having a thread guide at one end and having a pin keeper on the opposite side of the shank, the other shank being provided with a safety pin portion, and means for fastening the shanks in substantially closed parallel position.
3. A spool holder comprising a pair of substantially parallel shanks, one of which is extended into a safety pin portion, a
keeper 01; the yielding end of the safety pin portion, each shank having a spool engaging hookia orti on, and means" fonfastening the slianks in substantially *paralll p0- sitions.
Spool h ld 'QQIQPPifii'QQ y o substantially parallel shanks, one of which is extended into a safety pin .pjor tion, .-a
I keeper for the yielding end of the safety pin portions-of the shanks.
In testimony whereof 1 have signed my nametQi-this specification.
VIRGINIA VESTA MOORE.
