SHACKLE LOCK.
Application filed September 11, 1822.
The main object of the invention is to provide a novel form of lock i wl'iich the bolt or securing element is entirely separable from the body but may be secured positively and firmly therein by novel and simple means constituting an etlicient locking de vice.
A further purpose is to produce a lock having its bolting element engaged by merely entering the same into its body portion, but which will successfully resist attempts at separation or unlocking except by the-use of means, which by courtesy may be called a key although unlike any ordinary key in shape and manner of application, and which is specially provided.
Another aim is in the provision or a safety lock, compact in form, strong, simple and cheap to construct.
These objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereafter described and shown in the annexed drawing, forming, part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a partial side, partial longitudinal sectional view off an embodiment of the invention. s

The main body of the lock, as shown in the drawing, consists of a hollow cylindrical casing 10 having fixed bottom wall or closure 11 above which is a chamber 12 sepa rated by a transverse Partition wall 18 from view Serial No. 587,285.

Extending outwardly "from one side of the casing, to cover a portion of the length of the chambers 12 and 1a, is a web 17 used to integrally connect a solid round lug 18, containing an opening 19, preferably of square cross section and open atits end directed towards the open end of the casing 10.
A cap or cover, comprised of an annular element 20, closely fitting the outer wall of the casing, circumjacent to the upper chamber 16, is formed with an integral head 21 and fixed rigidly at the center of the headis bolt 22 bent to form a loop 23, the parallel portion 24 f the bolt being offset invardly at a point below the plane of the cap head 21 and thensquared to present a prong element 25 suited to freely enter the open int; 19 in the lug or keeper 18. This forked shaped bolt 22 also extends through the cap, as at 26, its lower part 27, 'ot' the inner prone; being squared to present flat surfaces inclined convergingly to the end which terminates in a plane, corresponding' with the end oi the bolt element 25,
Held rigidly to the faces of the element 27, by rivets 28, are flat outwardly bowed springs 29, which, together with the bolt element 27, may be passed through a rectangular opening 30 in the partition 15, by the exertion of moderate force to press the spring inward, as best shown in Figure 3, thereafter the springs, due to their resiliency, snapping outward, as shown in Figure 5 and, engaging below the partition 15, prevent withdrawal of the bolt 22.
In order to open the look. by retracting these several bolt elements from their con nection in. the casing and keeper, there is provided a square plate 31 containing an opening; 32 and provided with an angularly extending); handle 33 of considerable length the same constituting a key.
The key is passed through a slotted opening- 34 in. the bottom wall 11 of the easing: into the chamber 12 and then, by suitable manipulation. through the opening in the baille partition 13 and then into the cham her 14 to engage the several fiat springs 29 in the key plate opening 32, sliding over their outer surfaces and causing them to move inwardly until they can be passed out of the opening 30 in the partition 15, this condition being readily seen in Figure 3,
whereupon the key may be readily removed.
The construction and operation will be apparent from the foregoing description and it will also be clear that minor changes may be made which in no wise interfere with the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claims. 7 I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y 1. A lock comprising a cylindrical casing closed at one end and open at the other, a 1 pair of spaced transverse partitions fixed in said casing, a cover fitting over the open end of the casing, a keeper fixed-parallel on said casing, a fork-shaped bolt having one prong suited to slidably engage in said keeper, the other prong being tired in said cover to extend through the adjacent partition, resilient arms attached to the last named prong, said arms being enterable through the partition and adapted to spring outward to engage its inner surface, and an angular key adapted to be inserted through the closed end o'fi'said casing and adjacent partition, there being a rectangular opening in said key adapted to engage and compress said arms to permit their withdrawal through the other partition and release said cover and bolt.
2. A look comprising a tubular casing having a flush bottom and two spaced apertured transverse. partitions constituting bafiies and an apertured wall at one end, the other end being open, a keeper fixed to'said casing, a bolt bent to produce parallel ends, one of which is engageable in said keeper and the other to extend into said casing, flat outturned springs fixed to the entering end of said bolt, said springs and bolt end being adapted to pass through the aperture in the outermost of said partitions, a cover for said casing fixed on the entering end of said bolt the ends of said springs engaging thereafter against the inner surface of said partition, and a key enterable thru the aperture in said wall and battle partition adapted to engage and collapse said springs.
