To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED P. HANTsorI, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Brunswick. in the county of Middlesex and-State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Photographic Plates and Processes of Utilizing the Same, of which the following is a specification.

T his invention relates to improvements 1n fortune telling devices and the like and relates particularly to such devices wherein a picture of the patron is produced on a sensitized element together with certain characters purporting to be the fortune of the patron.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a sensitized element having a portion thereof exposed to the light to secure a white back ground upon which the characters may be printed or otherwise produced in contrasting colors.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a novel method of treating the sensitized element in order to produce the white back ground for the characters and at the same time prevent certain other portions of said sensitized element from being affected so as to preserve the same for producing a photograph of the patron.

As a further object the invention contemplates the production of an article of manufacture consisting of a sensitized element having a portion thereof exposed to the light to produce a white back ground upon which the characters may be applied prior to the utilization of the article in the photographic camera, thus producing an article particularly adapted for use as set forth in the first paragraph.

With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a face view of a sensitized plate shOWing the same prior to any exposure whatever.

Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 illustrating the same after having a portion thereof exposed to the light and showing the characters applied thereto, and

Fi ire 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the completed article bearing the picture as Well as the characters.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 5 designates as an entirety, a sensitized plate, commonly known as a tintype provided with the usual sensitized surface 6.

In preparing the plate for use a mat is placed over a portion thereof and is provided with an aperture through which the remaining portion of the plate is exposed. It will thus be seen that upon exposing the device to the light, so that the exposed portion will turn white when subsequently developed after which exposure certain characters or symbols may be printed or written thereon as at 7, the exposed portion of the plate being designated by the character 8. The article is then placed in the usual photographic camera and is ready for taking the impression or picture of the patron after which the article is removed and developed thereby fixing the sensitized surface and producing a picture of the patron bearing on a portion thereof the letters or characters.

It is obvious that a device of this nature is particularly adapted to'use in fortune telling devices and as the words or characters are printed or otherwise applied to the previously exposed portion of the picture, the completed article will produce an exceedingly realistic effect upon the patron.

It will be further'appreciated that the articles previously prepared in this manner may be sold as units or in quantities to the proprietors of such amusement and fortune telling devices and the characters or words may be varied to suit the pleasure of the manufacturer of the articles and proprietor of the machines.

l/Vhile in the foregoing there has been shown and described, the preferred method of this invention, it is to be understood that certain minor changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a photographic plate having a portion of its sensitized side exposed to light until no image can be photographed thereon and having imprinted on said portion certain char:

acters by means other than light exposure, v

and having a portion which is sensitized for the taking of a photograph in juxtaposition to the first said portion,

A photographic plate having the entire surface of one side covered With a coating Which is sensitive to light, one portion of said surface having been exposed to the light to give a light background for printed characters, and having characters printed upon said portion by means other than light exposure. 7

3. The herein described process of utiliz- 10 ing sensitized photographic plates including the exposing a portion of said plate to light until no image can be imprinted thereon, applying characters to the exposed portion of said plate by means other than light exposure, taking of a photograph on the unexposed portion of said plate, and developing of the entire plate.
