To all whom t may concern Be it lrnown thatI, DONALD I1. EASTMAN,"
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Olean, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented a newy and Improved Fountain Pen, ofwhich they which will be simple land practical in co-nstruction, durable and efficient vin use,.at
tractive in appearance, easy to clean, and
inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects inl view, the
invention consists in certa-in novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter describedrand pointed out in thev claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a view yin section through my improved pen showing the plunger in pos`1- tion to expel the ink from the font;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the pen y,
filled; and
Figure 3 is a view in transverse section on the line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 1 represents the barrel or` font of my improved pen. The font is screw threaded at its lower end, as indicated at 2, and a screw threaded pen carrying plug 3 is screwed into the lower end of the barrel in the usual manner.
1 represents' a plunger movable longitudinally of the barrel and frictionally fitting within the same. This plunger is hollow and formed with a closed lower end 5 which servesasa plunger head. The barrel 1 telescopes between the plunger and a sleeve 6 located on the outside of the barrel and integrally connected at its upper `end to the plunger, as indicated at 7. The barrel 1y is externally screw threaded adjacent its upper end, as seen at 8, and the lower end of the sleeve 6 is also screw threaded at` 9 to engage with the upper screw threaded end of the barrel.
The open upper endof the plunger 4 is closed by a plug 10. It will be seen that the'vplunger forms v'a convenient comparte ment for the storage of small articles. 1 The plug 10 which closes this'compartmentcarries a ring 11 or other suitable deviceA for conveniently attaching the pen to a` watch chain. y
The operation of the device ofthedevice is as follows: The sleeve 6 ordinarily has screw threaded engagement with the barrel 1, as
`seen in Figure 2. `VVhenthe ink has run lowv in the barrel, the sleeve is screwed downy on. thel barrel until the threads 8 and 9 vare out of engagement. The plungerv 'andv sleevev are then forced downwardly,`as seen in lFigure 1,
The ylower end of the pen is inserted in an ink well or ink `container and the plunger andsleeve are pulled-back toward'their normal position, sucking inkinto the barrel.v The sleeve is. again turned until the 'screw .expelling any remaining ink from the pen.v f I' threadsS and 9 vengage andthe penis ready for use. In cleaning the pen, the plunger and sleeve may be disengaged entirely from the barrel. l i
It will readily be seen from the foregoing so y description that I yprovide a pen which is extremely practical in construction and `efli-v` cient in operation. Various slight-changes and alterations might be made in the general v form and arrangement of the-parts described `without departing from the'spirit of the invention and hence I .do not wish to limit myselfv to the preciseA details set forth, l
butshall consider myself at liberty to make such slight` changes and lalterations asfairly fallwithin the spirit and'scope of the appended claims. f I
I claim: 1. In a fountain pen, a ybarrel having an open upper end, an elongated cylindrical# plunger movable in the barrel through. the open end thereof, a sleeve secured to the up-` per end of the plunger and surrounding and spaced from the same and between which and the plunger the barrel is adapted to telescope withthe plunger tightly fitting the barrel throughout its length, and means for relmovably securing the lower end ofthe sleeve tothe upper end of the barrel. v
2.' In a fountain pen, a barrel, a plungerf in thebarrel, a sleeve on the outside of the barrel integrally connected to the plunger, said plunger consisting ofanl elongated` vhollow@ body `forming a receptacle between Which and the sleeve, the barrel telep scopes, said receptacle being closed at its lower end and' open at itsupper end, and a plug normally closing the open' end of the receptacle.
- 3.1m a fountain pen, aharrel having an thereof,` and a sleeve, secured to thek upper encl of the plunger and Surrounding" and l spaced fro-1n ,the= p same, and loe- 10 I tween which and; the' plungrth'e barrel is adapted to telescope with the plunger tightly fitting ther barrel throughout its length, the lOiverencl ofthe sleeve being internally Sorevlvethreacled t0 engage the Screw threaded enelv of the barrel.. v
