ENVELOPE.
Application filed November 21, 1921. Serial No. 516,727.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, EUGENE FREDRICK AHLQms'r, a citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, county of Henne- 5 pin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in E nvelopes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in envelopes particularly of the expansion type and it more specifically relates to such envelopes yemploying what is known in this art as gussets.
Such envelopes as at present constructed comprise a back member with which the members.
more often occurs at the juncture of the gusset with the back member and particularly adjacent the upper end of the gusset.
The object of this invention therefore is to provide an improved envelope.
Other objects of the invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings and will be ointed out in the annexed claims.
n the drawings there has been disclosed a structure designed to carry out the objects of the invention, but it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the exact features shown as various changes may be made within the scope of the claims which follow.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved envelope showing one form of tab reinforcement Figure 2 is a view in perspective of the gusset with a modified form of'tabs;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a fivepilce envelope embodying the invention; an
Figure 4 is a detail view of a back corner of the envelope shown in Figure 3..
The envelope is here shown as comprising a back member 3 and a front member 4. The envelope cover or fiap 5- is shown as integral with the back member. The front and back members are joined along the marginal portions of their sides and bottom by means of a gusset 6.
The referred form of gusset here shown is in ellows-like form and is therefore expansible. The gusset is formed with side marginal fianges 7 and bottom marginal flanges 8. The fianges 7 are adapted tobe secured, as by the usual adhesive, to the slde marginal portions of the front and back members while the flanges 8 are similarly secured to the bottom marginal portions of those two members.
In the selected embodiment of the invention here shown, a tab is provided on a marginal gusset flange which tab is adapted upon envelope assembly to be folded over the adjacent edge of an adjacent front or back member and secured to the face thereof. The tab is secured to the face of the member which is o posite to that to which the remainder of t e tabbed gusset flange is secured.
'Bhe tab 9 is simply provided by making one cut in the terminal portion of a gusset fiange`7 which cut preferably inwardly extends to the fold of the flange. Such tab 9, when the envelope is assembled with the gusset flange adherent to the inner marginal side and bottom portions of the front and back member, is folded over the edge of the members and is secured, as by an adhesive, to the adjacently presented portion of the outer face of the front or' of the back member or both. In the present commercial form of this invention, a single such tab 9 is terminally formed on the two rear gusset flanges and each is folded over and secured to the adjacent outer faces of the back member. The front tabs are omitted in such form.
In Figure 2 is shown a modified tab form wherein two adjacent cuts are made inwardly from the edge to the fold of the marginal gusset fiange 7 so as to produce an intermediate tab 10 which is adapted to be folded and secured to one of the members of the envelope. Similarly, if desired, such tabs may be formed in the marginal fianges 8 and likewise secured to the face of the front or back member opposite that to which the remainder of the gusset fiange is secured.
secured by an adhesive between the linings and the adjacent front and back members.`
In such construction the reinforcing terminaltabs 9 are preferably employed and they are folded outwardly to embrace the edge of the back member. Thus the back is prevented from separating from the inner lins"` ing adjacent the flap due to frequent o enin and closing of thefilled envelope. buch a ve-piece envelope embodying this invention is shown in Figure 3 wherein the envelope is shownv to consist ofv a back member 3 and integral flap 5. The outer faces of A ythe absence of the of the correspondin and wear.
the adjacent side marginal flanges 7 and bottom marginal flanges 8 of the gusset 6 are secured by an adhesive to the' inner faces side and bottom marinal portions of t e back member. The guck inner lining 11 is secured by an adhesive to the inner faces of the flanges 7 and 8. The terminal tabs 9 of the back vflanges 7 of the gusset are outwardly extended and folded over and secured by an adhesive to tne adjacent portion of the outer face of the back member 8. Preferably, in such construction, the tabs 9 are only-used at such back portion thus reinforcing the envelope at the two points of greatest strain The front member is secured by an adhesive along its sides and bottom to the outer' faces of the side and bottom gusset flanges 7 and 8, while the front inner lining 12 is similarly secured alon its marginal portions to the inner faces o the marginal flanges 7 and 8 of the gusset. The reinforcing tab construction is not so necessary at this front end as there is not present the frequent strain tending to separate the front memberfrom the usset and lining due to ap. I claim as my invention: 1. An expansion envelope having front and back members,a gusset to form the sides l and bottom of the envelope, marginal flanges provided along both edges of the gusset Vwhereby the gusset may be secured to the nal portions of the front and back ginal flanges provided along both ed es of the usset whereby the gusset may e secured to the margmal portions of the front and back members, onej of the mar 'nal flanges of the guet being cut to prov1de a tab adapted to befolded over the edgel of an adjacent member and secured to the face theeof whereby the envelope is strengthene 3. An expansion l envelopev Vhaving front and back members, a gusset to form the sides and bottom of the envelope, and mar- -ginal flanges provided along both ed es of the gusset whereby the gusset ma e secure to the marginal portions of t e front and back members, one of the marginal flanges of the gusset being cut adjacent its terminus to provide a terminal tab adapted to be folded over the ed e adjacent the member and `secured to t e face thereof whereby the envelope is stren thened.
4. An expansion envelope aving front and back members, linings therefor, a gusset to form the sides and bottom of the envelope, and marginal flanges provided along both edges of the gusset whereby the gusset flanges may be secured between the front member andits lining and between the back member and its linin in combination with terminal tabs on sai gusset flanges at the upper side of the envelope whereby said tabs may be outwardly and backwardly folded and secured to the outer face of the back member.
In' witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of November, 1921.
EUGENE FREDRICK AHLQUIST.
