CAR SEAL.
Application filed June 9,
T 0 all whom z't may concern; 7 3
Be it known that I, NLARTIN, J LrNs, a citizen of the United States, resident of St.
Paul, county of Hennepin, State of Minne sota, have invented certain new and .useful' Improvements in Car Seals, of which the following is a specification.
.The object of my invention is to simplify and improve the car'seal shown and vdescribed in my pending application for Letters Patent of the United States, filed April 6, 1922, Serial No. M9981.
A further object is to provide a simple,
inexpensive seal and one which can not be. successfully tampered with without detection. 7 a
The invention consists generally in various constructlons and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly point- In the accompanying drawings forming part f this specification,
their locking position,
Figure 7 is a sectional view of the jacket or casing, the inner shell of the seal being shown in full lines, I Figure 8 is a sectional view n the line In the drawing, 2 represents a metallic strip or band of thin material adapted to bend orflex for convenient insertion intothe staple or lug of a car door. At one end of this hand I provide a housing or casing This housing may be made in different ways but I have indicated in Figures 2 and 3 how it may be formed by folding one end of the hand. A section 3 of the band forms the bottom of the housing and a folded section 4 the top thereof, and said section 4 has laterally extending wings 5 formed thereon which are folded downwardly and inwardly under the section 3 to form the side walls of the housing. The socket into which the 1922. Serial No. Seizes.
tongue of the car seal is inserted maybe made in different ways butl prefer. to fold' a sectiono of the band, providing laterally projecting wings 7, thereon which are folded downwardly and inwardly to form the'gside walls an d bottom of the socket, the endsbeing open, the outerend to receive the locking tongue andthe inner end of the socketihavging a slot 8 therein, preferably downwardly and inwardly inclined. A 1ink9 is adapted to enter this slot. The walls of the socket near the middle thereof are, provided with an inclined notch lO extending inwardly h toward the center of the'socket, as' shown o in Figureslto'l'. a
The rear wall of the notch 10 has a recess or seat 11 thatis adapted to receivei the link 9, said link normallyrestingin said recess when the-seal is in its unlocked position, the other end f the linklying in the slot 8.- A locking tongue 12 is ,formed on the other end'of the band2, preferably by folding the band upon itself to provide the desired thickness and when this has been done, the upper edge'of' the tongueisflcut away to form the inclined'snrface l3 and at'the rear of this surface is a downwardly and inwardly inclined notch l l, a shoulder ,15 being provided in the rear of the notch above the level of the surface,f13. -Thetongue also is preferably provided with a straight forwardedgel6 that is adapted to contact with the forward end ofthe link 9 theseat, 11. v
' As the link is pushed out of-theseal' l1v it drops into the notch 14 in the tongue, sliding also :in the notch 10 in the housing,
and as the tongue advancesthepart1-5 laps i 1 over the slot 10 and prevents the withdrawal of the link therein. s
I also provide a spring fingeri18, prefer- I ably Fpressed' out of the wall of the socket and extending acrossthe sl0t8 and-having its end 19 projecting beyond the end of the tongue and overhanging the link, so'that therewill be no possibility of the linkworlo ing back into the slot 8, and allowing the seal. to be unlocked. This tongue closing the slot 8 is an important feature of this present invention, certain changes, which are also important, being made in the arrangement of the slots in the housing and n the tongue wherein the other end of the link is en aged. v 1
With t is form of seal embodying the and press it forwardly in the slot 8 out of 'it' back into the slot in the housing to al-- low the tongue to be withdrawn sufliciently so that the slots inthe housing and tongue will register and permit the return of the' "link toits normal position in the seat of the guard or" safety finger it "will be impossible for" any one tdmani'pulat'e the link andwork socket.
1 I prefer also toprovide a lug at the en trance,ofIthe-notches in the'socket Wall to overha-n-gth'e seat 11 and aid in holding the link in place on thisseat, ready for use when to t the l'ockin'r ton ue is thrust into the socket.
I'cla1m as my invention:
