FRANCIS IMARION SHEEN, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISEANA.
APPARATUS FOR HANDLING PACKAGES.
Application filed January 19 1922. Serial No. seoeee.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RANCIS MARION SHEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans 6 and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Handling Packages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an apparatus for handling packages and other articles and has for its object to provide a means which will be simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and more efiicient in use than those heretofore proposed.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views 2-- Figure 1 is a plan view of an apparatus made in accordance with this invention Figure 2 is a side elevational view of th parts shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 illustrating the use of the invention; and
Figure 4 is a view of one of the package engaging curved members detached from the apparatus.
1 indicates a lever like member preferably made of wood which is provided with a handle portion 2 and a cutaway portion 3. Fitting the cutaway portion 3 is a package engaging member 4 preferably made of metal and secured to the member 1 as by the bolts 5 and 6. Said member t is provided with the raised inclined portion 7 fitting the extreme end of the member 1, and said member 7 is provided with the are shaped or curved member 8 adapted tofit the curvature of a (tiarcil'el, hogshead or other article to be han- Secured as by the bolts 6 is a strap like bracing member 9 having the flange 10 through which the bolt 6 passes and extending upwardly from the member 1 as shown. Said strag like member 9 is sharply bent as 5 at 11, an extends to the rear to form. the
strengthening. and bracing member 12 pro vided with the flange 13 secured to the member l, as by the bolts 14- and 15.
Fitting inthe angle formed by the bend ll of the strap member 9 is the upright bracing and stiffening member 16 secured to the member 1 by any suitable means, as for example, the tenon 17 and also secured to the strap member 9 as by the bolt 18.
Fitting the said portion 12 of the strap member 9 is the upper gripping member 2!; provided with the rearward extension 21 secured to said portion 12 as by the bolts 22 and 23, and provided at its forward overhanging end with the curved member 24 all as will be clear from Figures 1 and 2.
The operation of this device will be readily understood from the foregoing but may be briefly stated as follows When it is desired to cant or move a heavy object such as the hogshead 25, the u per curved member 24: is inserted in the head portion of the said hogshead so that it may fit the curvature of the chine while the lower" curved member 8 is permitted to rest against the outside of the hogshead as at the point illustrated at 26 in Figure 3.
Strain may now be brought on the extend ing handle portion 2 of the lever like memher 1, whereupon the curved member 8 acting as a fulcrum, a very considerable leverage will be exerted on the hogshead 25 or other article to be handled with the result that the latter may be readily tipped or moved as in Figure 3.
When this strain is brought on the pack age being handled, the strap member 9 and bracing member 16 effectually receive said strain while the portion 12 of said strap member is longitudinally strained. and therefore, resists with its maximum strength.
The bolts 18. 92 and 28 which secure the member 20 to the strap member 9 effectually hold the curved member 2a to said strap member 9 and thus is a rigid construction provided which has a maximum of strength and resisting power with a minimum of weight. 7
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction as well as the arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention, and therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the above disclosure except as may be required by the claims.
What is claimed is 1. In an apparatus for handling articles the combination of a lever member; an ar-' ticle engaging member rigid with said lever member; a strap member provided with an angle portion secured to said lever member; a stiffening member engaging said angle portion and said lever member; and an article engaging member rigid With said strap member, substantially as described.
2; In. an apparatus for handling articles the combination of a lever member; an ar-- ti cle engaging member of a. curved form rigid with said lever member; a strap member provided with an angle portion and two flange like portions secured to said lever member; a stiffening member engaging said angle portion and said lever member; and
member having an extended package engagingsurl ace rigidly attached to said lever like member; a rigid bracing member carried by said lever like member; a strap member secured to said bracing member and lever like member and adapted-to be longitudie f nally strained when said lever member is in use, and a package engaging member carried by said strap member, substantially as described.
' In testnnony whereof I aflix my signature.
FRANCIS MARION SHEEN.
