- W. RELIH A N DISPLAY DISPENSER Filed July 1.. 1920 2 Sheets-Sheet i Wil'nepded: jnvenior;

Patented May 15, 1923.
UNITED STATES.
WILLIAM RELI HAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ROBERT GAIR COMPANY,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEWYORK.
DISPLAY DISPENSER.
Application filed July 1, 1920. Serial No. 393,327.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM RELIHAN, a citizen of the United States, residin in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and tate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Dispensers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in display containers of semi-easel type and from which the goods are dispensed to the purchaser.
One of the objects of the device is to provide a. container made from a single flat sheet and of such assembly construction as will permit of the majority of the blanking, cutting and scoring operations to be performed in aminimum number of handlings and preferably in a single operation without the rehandling of the blank therefor.
Another important advance" is the provision of a display dispenser which may be held in substantially rectangular container form of a contour best suited to the needs of the goods which are displayed and dispensed therefrom, holding them in easy dispensing position, and the container being constructed in a rigid, non-collapsible manner without the use of glue in making up any of the joints thereon.
Another object of the device isthat it maybe shipped knocked-down and quickly and easily assembled without the use of special machinery.
The invention further contemplates, the provision of a container which is adapted to assume a substantially rectangular form to be enclosed in a rectangular casing, and which container, when removed from the o casing, is-ready to' be folded into display or easel position with. the goods contained therein, or not, as desired.
The invention still further contemplates the production of a display container from a blank which can be cut with a. minimum' the display surfaces carrysuflicie'nt area topermit of the provision of'plenty of space for advertising purposes and preferably in the present'instance, all such surfaces should I be arranged in a single plane thus creating down from the connecting member 9 an in the sections 7 and 8. The locking mema great deal of economy in the manufacture of the container itself.
. Obviously enough, great economy in the present instance consists in simplifying the creating of the .blank.for carton purposes and so constructing the same as to ermit such operation to be performed pref drably by a single operation, and also presenting the display surfaces in a single plane so that they may be printed on such surfaces in such a manner that when the blank is folded into display container form, all such display surfaces are simultaneously presented to the vision.
These and other features, capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from the subjoined detail description of one specific embodiment thereof, illustrated in the accompanying'drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective showing the container set up in display position; 75
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the container enclosed in a casing ready forshipment; v
Fig. 3 is an end view of the container enclosed in a casing;
Fig. 4 is a plan of the container ready to be packed into a casing;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmental on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4-; and
Fig. 6 is a plan of a blank before being folded.
The displaycontainer, when folded, comprises essentially two container sections 7 and 8, an intermediate connecting member 9, and locking members 11 and 1 2 extendin section interlocking with the sections 7 and 8 to lock the display container in upright display'position, as shown in Fig. 1. The sections 7 and 8 each have an end wall 13 and two side walls 14: and 15, the adjacent. ends of the sections 7 and 8 not being provided with walls, thereby facilitating the draping of goods over the connecting mema her 9 with the ends ofthe goods suspended.
here 11 and 12 are substantially triangular and extensive in surface area to afford adequate space for advertising purposes and the like. The locking members 11 and 12 are furthermore provided with .neck por tions 16 .of preferably the heightof the walls 14 and I5 and scored along thelines 17 shown in 6, to facilitate folding the locking members 11 and 12 over the goods, as shown in Fig. 4, with the neck portion 16 in alinement with the walls 14 and 15.
' For securing the locking members 11 and 12 to the container sections 7 and 8, each locking member is provided with lateral tongues 17 notched at 18 to extend into the cuts 19 shown in Fig. 6, and thereby securely anchor the sections 7 and 8 in place at an angle relative to one another, as shown in Fig. 1. The neck portions 16 are defined from the connecting member 9 by the scorings 35.
The blank, as shown in Fig. 6, is provided with parallel scoringsy20, 21 and 22, the cuts 19, and scorings 35, as shown being preferably in alinement with the scorings 20. Each of the sections of the blank is furthermore provided with two three-sided cuts 23 formin locking tongues. The scorings 20, 21 an 22 and cuts 23 will cooperate to produce the walls 14 and 15. The
width of the portions of the walls 14 and 15 included between their outer edges and the scorings 22 is commensurate with the distance the cuts 23 are spaced from the scorings 20. blank is furthermore provided with parallel scorings 24, 25 and 26, which cooperate to form the end Walls 13. Each of the sections 7 and 8 is also provided with two arms 27 and 28, which in the blank illustrated in Fig. 6, appear as continuations of the portions included betweenthe scorings 20 and 21. The scorings 29 at right angles.
to the scorings 20 and 21 define the arms 27 and 28 from the aforesaid included portions and also define the location along which the arms are to be folded. The ends of the arms 27 and 28 are provided withcooperating locking tongues 30 and 31. The
portions of the end walls 13 included between their outer edges and the scorings '26. The aforementioned blank is preferably blanked, scored and cut, as described, in one operation. For folding the sections 7 and 8 into container position, it' is first desirable to form the walls 14 and 15, which is accomplished by folding inwardlv along the scorlugs 20 and 21 and outwardly along'the scorings 22 with the portions included between the scorings 21 and 22 forming the inner lining of such walls. Thereupon the portion' included between the outer edges of the walls and the scorings 22 are slipped under the tongues formed by the cuts 23, as
Each of the sections of the shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The walls 14 and 15 are now in position.
Thereupon the end walls 13' are folded inwardly along the scorings 24 and 25 and outwardly along the scorings 26 so that the portions included between the scorings 25 and 26 will form the inner lining of the end walls 13 and the portions included between the outer edge of the blank and the scorings 26 will be retained between the inner side of the side Walls 14 and 15, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. Then the arms 27 and 28 are folded along the scorings 29 to lie along the outside of the walls 13 where their tongues 30 interlock to properly secure the walls 14, 15 and 13 in position and ing the sections in their stretched-out position, as shown in Fig. 2, ready for shipment. 1 When it is desiredto set up the container for display purposes, it is only necessary to fold the container along the scorings 37 and 38 defining the connecting member 9 to assume the position shown in Fig. 1, then foldthe locking members 11 and 12 down and slip the tongues 17 into the cuts19, the tongues 17 in such position extendin between portions of the walls 14 and 15, being concealed thereby (see Fig. 1).
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit or scope'of the invention.
