STEAllE-PRESSURE UOOKER.
Application filed December 13, 1920'. Serial No. 430,117.
To all whom t may concer/n.: v
Be it known that I, JOHN T. SLoooMB, a citizen of the United States, residing vat Providence, in the county ot Providence and State of Rhode, Island, have invented certain new and useful .Improvements lin Steam-Fressure Cookers, of which the fol-.K
lowing' is a specification. .l f
Myinvention relates to cooking vessels in which the steam is not allowed to escape at low temperature, otherwise known as pressure cookers. This invention is animprovement upon the construction set forth in United States Patent No. 1,111,810 issued to me Sept. 29, 1914. y
The Aessential objectsl of my invention are to ,furnish a means for relieving excessive steam pressure in the pressure cooker in such a manner as .toinsure instantaneous and certain operation and avoid thedelayed action incident to the use of special safety valves which stick after corrosion of the parts; to avoid the. use of any independent safety valve and utilize thereceptacle cover `tor this purpose; to render the steam `pressure releasing means adjustable to any de sired or predetermined degree; to prevent scorching and any change or loss of ingredients in cooking, and to utilize the conined 4 heat to a maximum.
To the above and correlated ends my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations of lparts as fall within the scopeof the appended claims. In ythe accompanying drawings` which form a partof this specification,
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially in central vertical section of my pressure cooker,
4 Figure' 2, a bottom plan view thereof,
' Figure 3, a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4, a side elevation of the socket against the neck. This construction forms f solid Hat' rectangular rim: adapted toacconr` modate a cover. The bottom 719i the outer C,
clined shoulders 15. l/Velded'tofopposite 'vessel is provided with radially disposedfinportions of the side wall are ears 17ca,rrying4 pintles 18r pivotally engaging tliefarm,
portion 19 ot a resilient yoke or bail 2O.l i y A lsleeve 21 on the-yoke has a threaded I perforation 22 to receive a set screw-.23 Aregf Thel isterable in a notch 24 in the yoke.
sleeve has a depending lug 25.and yadjacent",-
the latter is provided with aV conical hole or socket 26. The sleeve or bearingmember 21 i 70 may be integral with the'` yoke. y
A vessel cover 28 has an annular marginal vertical hollow post 32 having an linternal 'thread 33 engaging an ez'rternalthread- 34 on a sleeve 35 whoseinternal thread 36"en' gages'a -thread 37 on a rod 38 whiclihas a head 39 on its lowerend. A' set screw40 in the post engages the sleeve 35 whichcontrols the vertical position of the rod 38. The
sleeve has diametrically op-positely disposed cavitles 41 on its upper end to accommodate a bifurcated wrench or other turning tool.;` Above its threaded portion the rod hasfast` thereto lateral arms 4 2;l and abovethe arms the rod has a tapering end 43 Iadapted to seat in the socket 26 and engage the lug 25 which forms an abutment. N
Adapted for insertion intothe vessel 6 is'A a second vessel 45 consisting or` a bottom 46' l f:
adapted'to restv on the ribs 15, and a ytapering cylindrical side wall 47 having itsuppei,'.
ortion 48 offset to form an annular internal shoulder 49.` `Its eovercomprises a topf 50 and side flange =51 provided with bayonet slots 52 adapted to receive pins 53 fastl in i the portion 48 of the vessel body. Fasty to the top of this cover are loops 55 in which.` Y V100. l Nested in the last describedvessel is -a are pivoted the ends of a bail 56. 4
third vessel or pail 58 comprising a bottom 59 and a tapering'l cylindrical Aside wall 60 having at opposite sides near its top pins61 adaptedr to register in bayonet slots 62 in the flange 630i" a covertop 64. Loops 66 onfthe cover loosely receive the ends oi'fa bail- 67.l The vessel 58 is muchshorter than 'the vessel 45, and cover flange 63is on the shoulder 49.
supported f confinement may be increased or diminished The vessel 38 and the lower portion of the vessel 45 furnish separate receptacles tor the articles to be cooked.
The inner vessels are introduced and removed from the outer vessel by means or' their respective bails, and the inner vessels are everywhere spaced from the outer vessel to allow the liquid and steam Ytree access to all parts thereof. The bayonet slot engagen'ient makes each of the inner vessels including` its cover portable as a single element, but enables disengagement ot the cover when necessary. The contents or the inner receptacles remain intact and no part ot' the ingredients therein escape.
The/cover' 2S acts also as the valve for releasing the steam from coniinement when the pressure has become excessive. The degree otpressure allowed to generate in the receptacle before escape ot the steam Ptrom by manually rotating,` the rod 38 through the arms e2 either upwardly or downwardly. Because ot the resilient character or the yoke 2O there is an increased resistance ot' the latter against the cover as the rod is elevated, thus contining an increased number ot pounds oi4 steam. After he rod has been elevated the distance to insure a desired number of pounds of resistance the sleeve is rotated spirally until its lower end abuts against the head 39 ot the rod, and prevents any further vertical travel ot the rod. The sleeve may be Vhired in any desired position by means of the set screw i-O.
I claim l. ln a steam pressure cooking' apparatus, a receptacle, a cover on the receptacle, a resilient yoke on the receptacle, a bearing member on the yoke, a threaded post on the cover, a sleeve having threaded engagement with the post and provided with an internal thread, and a rod engaging; the bearing member and provided with a thread loosely engagingv the internal thread oth said sleeve.
2. ln a steam pressure cooking apparatus, a receptacle, a cover resting` on the receptacle, a resilient yoke on the receptacle, a bearing' member on the yoke, a threaded post on the cover, a sleeve having' threaded engagement with the post and provided with a thread. a rod engageable with the bearing member provided with a thread engaging said thread oft' said sleeve, and a head on the rod below the sleeve. i
3. ln a steam pressure cooking apparatus, a receptacle, a cover on the receptacle, a resilient yoke on the receptacle, a bearing member on the yoke, a tubular internally threaded post on the cover, a sleeve having threaded engagement with the post and yprovided with an internal thread, a rod enl qageable at its upper end with the bearing member and provided with a thread loosely engaging the'internal thread of said sleeve, a head on the lower end ot' the rod engageable with the sleeve, anda set screw in the post engaging the sleeve.`
