WALTER I. TUTTLE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOIt TO MOSSBERG COMPANY, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, A
CORPORATION OF RHODE ISLAND.
MOUNTING FOR BOBBINS.
Application filed February 5, 1921. Serial No. 442,649.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER I. TUTTLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Providence, county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented an Imrovement in Mountings for Bobbins, of which the following is a specification.
I This invention relates to bobbin supporting mechanism and is more particularly adapted for use in textile machinery One of the objects is to provide mechanism of the above type of, simple and practical construction and efiicient action. Another object is to provide a mechanism of the above type in which the parts are securely mounted and yet accurately positloned. Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter. I
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be' exemplified in the structure hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing in which is shown one of various possible embodiments of this invention,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section thereof; Figure 2 is an end view of the same; and Figure 3 is a cross-section taken on the line 33 of Figure 1. Similar reference characters refer to Slmllar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring now to Figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown at 10 a tubular support comprising an inner tubular member 11 formed of wood or the like surrounded by an outer metal sleeve or-sheath 12.
At-one end of thissupport is provided a ring 13, the bore through which registers with three or more outwardly projecting lugs 14, the outersurfaces of each ofwhich are flush with the outer wrface of the sheath 12. These lugs fit in suitable slots at the end of the tube 12 as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, and between the lugs the edge of the part 12 is flan ed or headed over as shown at 15 to 71101 the parts securely in assembled relation.
At the opposite end of the support there is inner tube 11 andof the springs provided a crown ratchet 16 flanged at 17 to fit over and be secured to the sleeve'12.
The above tubular support 10 is adapted to fit removably within a bobbin, diagrammatically indicated at 18 which rests thereon and against the ratchet 16 There is a likelihood however of substantial variation in the bore of bobbins and yet'it has been found to be desirable that they be securely held in place and yet readily removable whatever their departure from uniformity. Also it is highly desirablethat they be centered with substantial accuracy with respect to the axis of the supporting member. I
Turning now to the features of this invention which bear directly on the facts immediately above recited, there are provided a plurality of spring members 19 here shown as two in number, symmetrically disposed about the axis of the bobbin support. These springs. which are of substantially identical construction, may be formed of heavy spring wire bowed throughout their central portion and having their end parts 20 resting within slots in the member 11 to permit of slight longitudinal movement at one or both ends as the spring is flattened out. The bowed portion of these springs passes through suitable slots in the outer sheath'12, which slots register with a recess or groove 21 in the,
member 11 into which the springs may be compressed as they are. flattened out and, if
necessary, rest substantially flush with the outer surface of the tube.
Considering the action of one of these springs, it engages the bore of the bobbin with a yieldin pressure, and even though the diameter 0 the latter vary, it will, while readily removable, be held in place with a substantially uniform friction. With a plurality of springs symmetrically disposed they tend to hold the bobbin in co axial position with respect to the tubular support. Even with the two springs shown,-the bobbin is centered as regards the plane of the springs by their substantially equal and opposite resilient pressure and is centered as to a plane transverse thereto by the tendency to find and retain the plane of maximum diameter of the bore of the bobbin. I
It will thus be. seen that there is provided apparatus in which the several objects of this invention are vachieved and that the be nous changes might be made in the act efi'ectively to support a bobbin accurately in position and yet permit its ready removal.
s various possible embodiments might made of-the above invention and as vaembodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein setforth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be inter-* preted as sense.
I claim as my invention v Y 1. In mechanism of the class described, in combination with a bobbin or .the like, a member adapted to enter the bore'of the bobbin to support the same comprising an inner hollow wooden member and an outer metal sheath substantially enc'asing and permanently secured to said wooden mem-. ber, said sheath having a longitudinal slot therein and saidwooden longitudinal groove registering with said slot and extending beyond each end of said slot whereby a recess is formed between said sheath and said inner member at each end of said slot, and an elongated spring member having its end slidably resting in said recesses ahd having its central portion tending to spring outwardly through said slot to vpress against the inner surface of the bobbin to prevent relative rotation between said :bobbin and said supporting member.
2.. In mechanism of the class described, in combination with a bobbin or the like, an
illustrative and not in a limiting rality of longitudinal member having 3.
inner hollow supportin member having a plurality oflongitudina grooves formed in metal sleeve member substansupporting memflanged over 'an its surface, a tially encasing said inner berand having a portion end thereof to secure said gether, said sleeve 'member having a pluslot-sregistering with said longitudinal grooves, a spring member seated in each of said grooves and tending at its central portion to spring outwardly through said slot against the inner surface of the bobbinto relation to said support and to prevent relative rotation between said bobbin and said support.
3. In mechanism of the class described, in combination with a bobbin or the like, a rotatable supporting member} adapted to enter the bore of the bobbin andsupport the same to rotate therewith, said supporting member comprising an inner member-having a pluralityof grooves formed in-its surface and an outer metallic sleeve substantially encasing said inner member and two' members tohold said bobbin in co-axial having a plurality of slots registering with 7 January, 1921.
