IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOSITIONS FOR FIRE-BRICK, STOVE-LININGS, &c.
Specification forming, part of Letters Patent No. 145,448, dated December 9, 1873; application filed August 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, ERNST H. RICHTER, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improyed Composition for Stove-Linings, Fire-Brick, Retorts, &c., of which the following is a specitication:
The principal object of this invention is to produce a stove-lining which will not clinker, and also fire-brick, retorts, or other compounds of similar nature that are exposed to the direct action of fire, and therefore apt to be injured or to clinker, the same as stove-linings.
In experimenting, with this object in View, I have found that oyster-shells, properly pulverized, furnish a Very desirable addition to the ordinary compounds, and absolutely prevent the formation of clinkers when mixed with sand, clay, and a small proportion of metal, such as zinc or iron. The proportions in which these substances are used may be considerably varied, and I have attained good results from the Va -ying proportions, but the best I have found to be as follows, to wit: Thirty (30) parts of oyster-shell, properly pulverized, to one hundred (100) parts of sand, preferably of the kind known as fire-brick sand, two hundred 200) parts of clay, and
from three (3) to six (6) parts of zinc or iron, in apowdered state. These ingredients are mixed so as to be intimately diffused through one another, and are then burned, the same as stove-linings, fire-brick, 850., are usually burned. I find that the small proportion of metal added furnishes an excellent combining material for the oyster-shell, which also prevents the product from becoming brittle and easily falling to pieces, while the oyster-shell resists the action of the heat to such an extent as to keep the surface of the article always clean or unobstructed by clinkers or similar attachments formed by the action of the heat. The metal may, in some cases, especially where the composition is well burnt, be omitted, and in place of the sand an additional proportion of clay may be used, although I prefer to use the sand.
I claimas my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent The composition herein described for stovelinings, fire-brick, retorts, &c., composed of the ingredients substantially as described.
