Be it known that I, JACOB OASHMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at I Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented. certain new and 5 a readily detachable cover of simple construction which normally covers the same.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide, a fluid-tight joint between the cover and the body portion of theplug by means of a gasket or otherpacking seated in a continuous groove in one of the parts, and a ridge adapted to forcibly engage the packing on the other part, and still other objects reside in detailsv of; construction and ar- 5 rangements ofparts which will be fully disclosedinthe following description with reference to the accompanying drawings which show. an embodiment of. the invention.

Referring to the drawings, the reference character 2 designatesthewall of a boiler or other vessel having an opening which is tapped for a correspondingly screw-threaded'pIug.
The plug of the present invention consistsof an externally threaded body member 3 which has an oblong passage 4: terminating at a distance from its front edge, andf'acye l-indrical space 5 formed forward of said" passageto receive a correspondingly formed; part of an abutment member hereinafter to be described.
The body 3 has at its opposite end aroun the oblong passage, a correspondingly formed ridge 6which forms part ofthe: fluid-tight joint betweenthe body and the cover member of the plug; 1
This cover member consists of an oblong plate 7 having a marginal channel 8 around a central core 9 which is grooved to receivethe eye-shaped head 10 of a retaining bolt 12 which 'is movably COIlllG'CtGCl'tO the cover by a pivot pin 13 I j The channel which is formed and proportioned to freely admit the ridge at theend of the body when the cover is in place, is slightly dove-tailed in cross-section to re tain a gasket 13 or other packing placed in its bottom portion.
The channel has furthermore and for the same purpose a shallow recess 14: in oneof its sides adaptedto receive a corresponding. projection 15 on the gasket-13'shown in detail in Figure 6 of the drawings.
The packing may be made of any'suitable material and-placed'in the channel in any convenient manner. in either a dry or molten condition, and" it is permanently held in place by the above. described means.
The cover member is sufiicientlysmall in width to permit ofits 'movingfreely through the passage of the body member when it is folded uponthe bolt: as illustrated in Figures 2 and 4 of the drawings When the cover member isin its closing position with relation to the body member of the device,jit is clamped inplace by the engagement of a nut 16 screwed upon the retaining screw, with an abutment member 17 hereinbefore referred" to. j
This abutment member consists in the form shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4. of a lid which engages the front edge of the body. member and whichis movably' connected therewith by a hinge j0i-nt 18.
The lid which fits loosely within the circular space 5 at the front end of; the body member has a flange 19 in; engagement with the edge of the same, and it is provided with a radial slot 20 to admit the retaining bolt 12.
\Vhen the cover member is in place on the body member as shown in Figure 1, the nut 16 is screwed upon the retaining bolt passing through the slot of the abutment member, into engagement with the outer surface of the same.
The ridge 6 on the body member forcibly brought in engagement with the packing in'the channel 8 of the cover member, produces a fluid-tight joint and when it is desired to open the plug for the admission or discharge of a liquid or other fluid to or from the vessel with which it is connected, the cover member is readily removed by first unscrewing the nut 16, then moving the abutment member about its hinge to the position shown in Figure 2, and finally drawing the cover member through the passage of the plug after it is folded upon the retaining bolt.
It will be apparent that this means of uncovering the opening of the boiler is advantageous over the old method of removing the entire plug inasmuch as it requires less effort and time on the part of the attendant, does not injure or wear the screw thread by which the plug is fastened in the opening and prevents the blow-outs often occuring in the use of ordinary plugs.
The body member has in its shoulder 21 at the end of its oblong passage a pair of recesses 22 to receive the ends of a spanner wrench for the purpose of tightening or removing the plug 3, and a cotter pin 23 applied at the end of the retaining bolt prevents the nut from being entirely removed therefrom, thereby maintaining the parts in their relative position, for instant readjustment whenever it is desired to replace the covermember.
In the modified construction shown in Figure 5 the abutment member 24: is formed integral with the nut 25, and the flange which in the first-described construction engages the edge of the body member at the front end thereof is eliminated.
When the nut 25 is screwed home, the )late 24 which fits inside the circular space at the front end of the body member, is brought in engagement with the shoulder at the end of the oblong passage of the same and thus performs the function of the hinged lid of the other form.
The last-described construction is particularly adapted for use in places where the space outside the boiler is too limited to permit of removal of the long retaining screw of the form shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Having thus described my invention what 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a hollow body member adapted to be secured in an opening of a boiler wall. a cover member movable through said body member and adapted to close the same by engagement with an end thereof, a retaining screw pivoted on the cover member, and a nut on the screw acting upon the opposite end of the body-member to hold the cover member in its closing position.
2. A device of the character described comprising a hollow body member adapted to be secured in an opening of a boiler wall, a cover member movable through said body member and adapted to close the same by engagement with an end thereof, a retaining screw pivoted on the cover member, an abutment member engaging the other end of the body member, and a nut on the screw cooperating with the abutment-member to hold the cover member in its closing position.
3. A device of the character described comprising a hollow body member adapted to be secured in an opening of a boiler wall, a cover-member movable through said body member and adapted to close the same by engagement with an end thereof, a retaining screw pivoted on the cover member, an abutment member engaging the other end of the body member, and a nut on the screw engaging with the abutment-member to hold the cover member in its closing position.
4. A device of the character described comprising a hollow body member adapted to be secured in an opening of a boiler wall a cover member movable through said body member and adapted to close the same by engagement with an end thereof, aretaining screw pivoted on the cover member, an abutment member hinged on the body member and having a slot to admit the bolt, and a nut on the bolt engaging the abutmentmember.
5. A blow-out plug comprising an eXternally screw-threaded hollow body member, a cover member movable through said body member and adapted to close the same by engagement with an end thereof, a, bolt pivoted on the cover member, and a nut on the bolt bearing upon the opposite end of the body member to hold the cover member in its closing position.
6. In combination, a hollow body adapted to be secured in an opening of a boilerwall and having at an end a ridge circumscribing its opening, a cover adapted to close said body and having a channel formed to admit said ridge, a packing in the bottom of the channel, and holding-means acting upon the cover to forcibly bring the ridge in engagement with the packing.

packing occupying the bottom of the channel, and holding-means acting upon the cover to forcibly bring the ridge in engagement with the packing.
8. In combination, a hollow body adapted to be secured in anopening of a boiler wall and having at an end a ridge circumscribing its opening, a cover adapted to close said body and having a channel formed to admit said ridge, the channel having in one of its walls a laterally extending nar row recess a gasket occupying the bottom of the channel and having a projection fitted in the recess, and holding means acting upon the cover to forcibly bring the ridge in engagement with the packing.
9. A device of the character described comprising a body member adapted to be secured in an opening of a boiler wall, having an oblong passage and a circular space at an end thereof, a cover member movable through said passage and adaptedto close the same by engagement with an end of the body member, a bolt pivoted on the cover member, an abutment member removably disposed in said space, and a nut 011 the bolt cooperating with the abutment member to hold the cover in its closing position.
10. A device of the character described comprising a body member adapted to be secured in an opening of a boiler wall, having an oblong passage and a circular space at an end thereof, a cover member movable through said passage and adapted to close the same by engagement with an end of the body member, a bolt pivoted on the cover member, an abutment member removably disposed in said space, and having a flange engaging the end of the body member, and a nut on the bolt cooperating with the abutment member to hold the cover in its closing position.
11. A device of the character described, comprising a hollow body member adapted to be secured in an opening of a boiler wall, said member having a ridge circumscribing its opening at an end thereof, an oblong channeled cover member movable through the body member and adapted to close the same by engagement with said ridge, a packing in the channel of the member with which the ridge engages, a bolt pivoted on the cover-member, an abutment member engaging the opposite end of the body memher, and a nut on the bolt cooperating with the abutment member to hold the cover member in its closing position.
12. A device of the character described, comprising a hollow body member adapted to be secured in an opening of a boiler wall, said member having a ridge circumscribing its opening at an end thereof, an oblong channeled cover member movable through the body member and adapted to close the same by engagement with said ridge, a packing in the channel of the member with which the ridge engages, a bolt pivoted on the cover-member, and a nut on the bolt acting upon the opposite end of the body member to hold the cover member in its closing position.
