To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that' I, CHARLES BAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 4in Nonbreakable Refuse Cans, of which the following is a specilication. n

This invention relates to cans used for gathering refuse, and the main object is to provide a can having a bott-om which is so constructed as to prevent breakage or denting when being handled.

Another object is to provide a modied type of can in which the bottom is removable so that the latter may be readily replaced when required. 1

These and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing.

Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional elevational view thru the preferred type of can.

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the modified type of can.

Figure 3 is avsectional elevational view of the modified type of can.

Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional elevational view of the lower portion of the modified type of can showing the means for releasing the bottom in open position.

Describing the Idrawing in detail, the

numeral 10 represents a relatively long an-v nular shell which has reinforcing rings 11 attachedto its upper and lower ends. The shell 10 is of the usual design common to refuse cans and has a loose-fitting cover 12 which has its edge 13 turned down in order to protect said cover vagainst bending or denting and also in order to provide a secure cover to prevent liies or the like from gaining access into the chamber 14. A handle 15, by which the cover 12 is removed, is

secured centrally on said cover.

An annular bottom 16 having a convergent Y wall 17 and an attachment rim 18 is secured to the shell 10 in such manner as to hang suspended with a space 19 between the bottom 16 and the lower edge 20 of the shellv 10, said edge 20 being the base upon which lower portion of the shell 10, having a shoul der 22 on its underside. v f

A bottom member 23, having a convergent wall 2etsimilar to the bottom 16, is inserted into-the shell 10 until the upper tapered edge 25 of said convergent wall abuts the shoulder 22. f

The shell'l() is slitted vertically in a 4number of places, and between said slits are formed resilient catch pawls 26 which normally arealigned with the shell 10. Lips 27 formed at the free ends of pawls`26 are engageable with the fiat flange 28, the

latter being partv of the bottom member 23.l

Swing arms ,29 are secured to the resilient pawls 26 and normally project outwardly therefrom.

In removing the bottom member 23 in the modified type of can, the swing arm 29 is urged toward the wall of shell 10. ThisA operation pulls resilient pawls 26 outwardly so that the face flange 28 becomes disengaged from the pawl lips 27 and the bottom 23 consequently drops out of place. Replacement is affected in the same manner that is, the shell 10 is inverted and a new bottom rests upon the shoulder 22, after which the swing arms are released, the latter permit- Y ting resilient pawls 26 to return to theirl normal position and lock the bottom in place.

The usefulness of refusecans of this type is obvious when considering the fact that cans are always handled in a rough way and consequently receive. severe treatment.`

The usual'practice is to, lift a can to the height of a wagon, to empty its contents,r

and then. to allow it to 'fall to the pavement. l

Almost invariably the cans strike the pavement on the edge 20. This usually shears the rivets which secure the bottom to the can, orthe shell wall may be bent inwardly or dented. The can herewith illustrated is` designed to overcome such damage by having the bottom member provided with a convergent *wall4 which is protected. against `damage by the lower portion of the shell 10.

It is apparent that the shell v10 may be dented or bent in falling without injuring n i' I the bottom. i
