BACK SHEAR TABLE.
Application filed August 10, 1921. Serial No. 491,242.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, LORENZ TvnnsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Back Shear Tables, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to back shear tables and particularly to that type of such table wherein the main section recedes from the shear while simultaneously another section of said table recedes and disappears during the receding movement ofthe main section.
An object of my invention is such a device of simple mechanical construction and in which simple means are employed for causing the disappearing section to operate when themain section recedes. i
Further objects will be apparent and the same will be better understood by reading the following description taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings forming a partthereof and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention;

: Referring to the drawings, themain section 1 is supported at its endnearest the shear 2 by links 3. The links 3 are supported by any suitable means such as a hy draulic device which will permit a slight downward movement of that end of the tables The end. of themain table away ed pinions 5. The shrouded pinions have gear teeth 15 thereon which engage similar teeth on the racks 6 and 7. The weight of the table and the material thereon is carried by the shrouds of the pinions 5 and rack-s 6. The teeth on said pinions 5 and racks 6 and 7 are employed merely for the purpose of rotating the axle 4 and moving the main sec-tion of the table away from the shear.
In Figures 5 and 6 a modification is shown and the corresponding parts will be numbered the same as in Figures 3 and 4: with the letter a afi'ixed thereto. In the arrangement shown in Figures 5 and 6 the disappearing section 12 is pivoted at 13 The section 12 is connected with the shaft 4P by a rod 9 at a point 11 so that when the eccentric portion 10 of the shaft 4 is rotated in a clockwise direction the parts will move from the position shown in Figure 5 to that shown in Figure 6, wherein one of the rollers inthe section 12 will be in line with the rollers 14: of the main section and the other two rollers of the disappearing section will so be below the rollers 1 F. In this arrangement, as in that shown in Figures 3 and 4:, v the center of the eccentric portion 10 of the shaft 4 is in line with the axes of the pinions 5 and the point 11 so that the disappearing section 12 is rigidly supported in the position shown in Figure 5. i The necessity for moving the main section away from the shear is to allow the Fcrop ends of the piece being sheared to pass downwardly between the shear 2 and the front end of the main section of the table into any suitable receiving device for collecting the crops.

Movement of the main section away from the shear causes a rotation of the axle 4 and by reason of the connection between the. axle 4; and the disappearing section 12 through the rod 9, the disappearing section is moved from the position shown in Figure 3 tothat shown in Figure 4. That is to say, the same is 1'0- tated around the pivotal point- 13 and some of the rollers of the disappearing section disappear underneath the table. After the main section has been moved back from the shear, the shear is operated and the crop end of the piece falls downwardly between the shear and the endol the main section of the table. As soon as the crop end has passed downwardly out of the way, the main section is moved back to the position shown in Figure 1 by an operation reverse to that above described. The piece is then run onto the table 1 and may be cut into any desired number of lengths at the will of the operator, the various lengths passing over the sections 1 and 12. Vhen the final crop is cut oil of the other end of the piece, the main section 1 is again moved away from the shear to allow the crop end to fall down between the table and shear. The main section is then in position to permit the crop end of another piece of material to pass downwardly after being sheared off.
When the parts are in the position shown in Figure 3, it will be noted that the center of the eccentric portion 10 of the axle 1 is in line with the center of the pin 11 and the center of the axis of the pinions 5. By this arrangement the disappearing section is positively locked in the position shown in Figure 3.
My invention has many advantages in that the means whereby the disappearing section is operated are extremely simple and of light weight and the operation of the parts is positive and not subject to disarrangement so that the operating and upkeep expense of my device is relatively very small.
Further advantages will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
While I have shown and described in detail one embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that I am not to be limited to the exact arrangement shown and described as many changes may be made in the details without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A table of the character described, comprising amain section and a disappearing section, movable means supporting one end of the main section, and means operatively connected to said supporting means for operating said disappearing section upon movement of said main section, substantially as described.
2. A table of the character described, comprising a main section and a disappearing section, means pivotally supporting said disappearing section, means for moving said main section longitudinally, and means operatively connecting the main section and the disappearing section whereby longitudinal movement of the main section eifects movement of said disappearing section around its pivotal point, substantially as described.
3. A table of the character described, comprising a main section, means yieldably supporting one end of said main section, means rigidly supporting the other end. of said main section, a pivotally supported disappearing section. and means operated by said last mentioned supporting means upon longitudinal movement oi said main section for rotating the disappearing section around its pivotal point, substantially as described.
4:. A table of the character described, comprising a main section and a disappearing section, means pivotally connecting said disappearing section to said main section, and means operated by the longitudinal movement of the main section for moving said disappearing section around its pivotal point, substantially as described.
A table of the character described, comprising a main section, means yieldably supporting one end of said main section, means rigidly supporting the other end of said main section, a disappearing section pivotally connected to said main section, and means operated by said last mentioned supporting means upon longitudinal movement of said main section for rotating the disappearino; section around its pivotal point, substantially as described.
6. A table of the character described, comprising a main section, a disappearing section pivotally connected to one end of said main section, rotary means supporting said main section, an eccentric operated by said rotary means, and means connecting said eecentric to said disappearing section whereby, upon the longitudinal movement of said main section, said disappearing section is rotated around its pivot by said eccentric, substantially as described.
7. A table of the character described, comprising a main section, a disappearing section pivotally connected thereto, an eccentric operated by said main section, and means connecting said eccentric and said disappearing section whereby a self-locking connection is produced to hold said disappearing section rigidly in alignment with said main section in one position of said main section, substantially as described.
8. A table of the character described, comprising a main section, a disappearing section pivotally connected to said main section,
a track, shrouded pinions connecting said 111g section having main section to said track, eccentric means operated by said pinions, and means connecting said eccentric to said disappearing section whereby the same is rotated around its pivotal point upon rotation of said pinions, substantially described.
9. A table ofthe character described, comprising a main section, means for moving the same longitudinally, rollers on said main section, a disappearing section pivotally connected to said main section, said disappeara plurality of rollers thereon, and means connecting said disappearing section to said main section whereby, upon the longitudinal movement of said main section, one 01'' said rollers is in line with the rollers on said table and the others of said rollers are below said table, substantially as described.
10. A table of the character described, comprising a main section, a disappearing section pivotally connected thereto, a track supporting said sections, a rack on said track, shrouded pinions supporting said sections on said track, a shaft operated by said pinions and having an eccentric portion thereon, means connecting the eccentric portion of said shaft to said disappearing section, power cylinders, and a rack operated thereby and engaging the pinions on said shaft whereby said pinions are rotated to move said main section longitudinally and cause the disappearing section to move downwardly around its pivotal point, substantially as described.
11. A table of the character described, comprising a main section, a disappearing section pivotally connected thereto, a track supporting said sections, a rack on said track, shrouded pinions supporting said sec tions on said track, a shaft operated by said pinions and having; an eccentric portion thereon, means connecting the eccentric portion of said shaft to said disappearing section, power means, and a rack operated thereby and engaging the pinions on said shaft whereby said pinions are rotated to move said main section longitudinally and cause the disappearing section to move downwardly around its pivotal point, substantially as described.
