An operating screw or spindle is rotatably jo-urnaled in a bearing 26 provided therefor in themovable jaw and is provided with a collar 27 positioned to rota-tablyabut a shoulder 28 formed on the movablevj aw and this spindle or operating screw is held against longitudinal. displacement by means oi? a stop plate 30 which is carried by the movable jaw and projects into an annular groove 31 cut or otherwise formed in the operating screw the stop plate being releas ably held in this position by means of a screw or pin 82 (see Figure A nut carrying frame, designated gei'ierally at 35 is assembled with the body portion 13 of the fixed jaw being arranged in the opening 13 thereof, and is provided with upper and lower tongues 36 and 37 respecand provided therefor in the lower part oi the body portion of the fixed jaw. In assemblingthe nut carrying trame with the tired jaw, it is entered through theopeir rear end of the fined jaw, the tongues 36 and 3"? sliding in the grooves 88 and 39 to permit of this assembly. When properly positioned on the fixed jaw the bolts 42 and 413 are threaded home and secured to the not carrying frame in proper position; i The sec-- tions 10 and 41 of the frame are provided with hearing lugs 1-6 and ll" which extend inwardly and which are accommodated in the opening of the hollow slide, it being understood that the slide is not only hollow but also has one wall or face removed to accommodate these bearing lugs. A cover plate 18 is integrally formed with the section 5 1v and extends over to the section ll), the cover plate having a flange 49 whichembraces the adjacent portion of the section 4:0 and this cover plate serves to enclose the mechanism carried by the frame 35 as will hereinafter more fully appear.
A nut, designated generally at 50 is provided and coacts with the operating screw or spindle 25 and this nut is carried by the bearing lugs 46 and 17. The nut 50 comprises two coacting parts or sections, designated at 51 and 52, the part 52 being fitted within the part 51 and each part includes a one-half of the threaded bearing, desig nated at 53. The part 51 of the nut includes upper and lower plates, designated at 51 and 51 and curved end portions 51 and 51 The plates 51 and 51 have lateral extensions 51 and 51 which are slidably received in guideways 46 and 17* provided in the bearing lugs 16 and 47 and in the adjacent structure of the section 10 and n ofthe nut carrying frame, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4, these bearing lugs serving in this manner to slidably support the parts of the nut. As shown in the drawings, the upper and lower surfaces of the part 52 slidably engage the upper and lower plates 51 and 51 of the part 51 and the side faces of this part 52 engages the adjacent faces of the bearing lugs whereby the part 52 of the nut is constrained to partake of its proper motions.
Operating mechanism is provided for urging the parts 51 and 52 of the nut into and out of engagement with the operating screw 25 and includes a crank shaft 55 rotatably journaled in the frame and having a pair of cranks 56 engageable with pins 57 carried on the part 51 and a single crank 58 of opposite throw with respect to the cranks 56 and engageable with a slot 59 provided in a link 59 pivotally connected to the part 52 by a pin 60 for imparting motion to this part. As shown in Figure at the link 59 has a depending rib 59 slidably received in. a guide slot 51 formed in the lower plate 51 of'the part 51 of the nut. The curved end portion 51 of the part 51 is also provided with a slot, designated at 51 which is alined with or a continuation of the slot 51 and which permits the link 59 to partake of its proper movements and to be assembled and disassembled. It is obvious that when the crank shaft is turned the cranks 56 impart a rectilinear movement to the part 51 and at the same time the crank 58 being of opposite throw imparts movement in an opposite direction to the part 52.
Actuating mechanism is provided for the crank shaft and preferably comprises a lever 60 pivotally mounted on the frame as by a screw 61 and having fixed thereto a gear 62 which meshes with a gear 63 fixed to the crank shaft. The outer end of the lever is preferably weighted, as at 65, so as to normally move the lever to position to maintain the nut in operative engagement with the operating screw. It is obvious that when the lever 60 is moved its motion will be imparted to the crank shaft by means of the gears 62 and 63 and this motion of the crank shaft will be effective to move the nut into and out of engagement with the operating screw. In the arrangement shown when the lever 60 is moved upwardly, the parts 51 and 52 of the nut will be moved out of engagement with the operating screw and when the lever is moved downwardly or permitted to fall downwardly these parts of the nut will be moved into operative cngagement with the operating screw.
In this manner the jaws of the wrench may be quickly and readily adjusted and at the same time the operating screw may be quickly brought into action in order to impart to the jaws a powerful grippin force. The nut carrying frame may be reac ily disassembled from the body portion of the jaw and action may be readily had to various parts of the nut and of the operating mechanism therefor for purposes of cleaning, replacement and repair.
I claim:
1. In a vise, a fixed jaw including a body portion having an opening and provided with slideways and grooves, a movable jaw including a hollow slide having ribs operat ively received in said slideways, an operating screw carried by said movable jaw and extending through the slide thereof, a nut carrying frame having tongues slidably received in the groove of the body portion and comprising sections releasably secured to the body portion, the nut carrying frame having bearing lugs arranged within the hol low slide, a two-part nut mounted on the nut carrying frame, operating mechanism for moving the parts of the nut so as to engage them with or disengage them from the operating screw including a crank shaft having cranks of opposite throw operative/1y connected with the parts of the nut and ac tuating mechanism for said crank shaft including a lever, and gearing between the lever and the crank shaft.

3. In a vise, a fixed jaw including a body portion having an opening provided with slideways and grooves, a movable jaw including a hollow slide provided with ribs operating in the guideways an operating screw carried by the movable jaw and extending through the slide thereof, a nut carrying frame having tongues received in the grooves and comprising sections releasably secured to the body portion and having bearing lugs, a twopart nut mounted on the nut carrying frame, one of the parts of said not comprising upper and lower plates and curved connecting portions, the other part being slidably fitted. 011 said plates, operating mechanism for said nut including a crank shaft journaled in said sections and having cranks of opposite throw, pins carried by said plates and operatively engag able with the cranks of one throw, a link connected to the part of the nut slidable on the plates and having a slot operatively receiving the crank of opposite throw with respect to the cranks engaging said pins, and actuating mechanism for said operating mechanisn'i including a weighted lever pivotally connected by one of said sections, and gipaping between said lever and said crank s at.
