UNITED STATES FRED FULGOBA, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
CALCULATING DEVICE.
Apphcation led January 17, 1922. Serial No. 529,834.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRED FULooRA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invente certain lnew and useful Improvements in Caleulatino' Devices; and I dol hereby declare the folowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make' and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in calculating devices and more particularly to suoli as are portable,-one ob`ect of the invention bein to provide a calculating device of the ciaracter specified which can be easily and quickly manipulated toascertain the cost of certain quantities of materials at certain prices.
A further object is to so construct a portable calculating device that it may be made suiciently cheap to permit its use. as an advertising medium.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a calculator embodying my improvements. Figure 2 is a sectional view. Figure 3 is a separate view of the price disk, and Figure 4 is a separate view of the disk showing quantities and total costs.
For convenience of description and illustration, I have shown and will describe my improvements as a calculator for determining the total cost of any desired number'of gallons of gasoline, at any one of various sellin rices of this product, per gallon, but it will. Ee understood that my improvements are ap licable for calculating the cost of a plurality of units of other materials havin a particular unit value, whether the units be reckoned by either liquid or dry measure or weight.
My improvements contemplate three disks l, 2 and 3, and preferably also, a backing disk 4; all of which disks are connected centrali by a pivot 5. v
The isk 1 is provided with an annular series of radial columns 6, each column being subdivided into blocks 7 and the several columns havin their outer ends at the edge of the disk an their inner ends upon a circle concentric with the disk but removed from the center thereof. Between the inner ends of the columns and the center of the disk is a circle or annular series of numerals 8 indicating quantities. Each of the numerals 8 -is alined radially with one of the columns 6 and in the blocks of each column areinscribed or otherwise displayed numerals indicating total values, the values piogressing arithmetically from the inner end of the column to the outer end thereof.
rl`he disk 2 (which is superimposed upon the disk 1) is provided with an arcuate slot 9 which is concentric to the pivotal mounting of the disk and at such a distance radially therefrom as to-bc disposed over the annular series of quantity numerals indicated at 8on the disk 1 whereby to permit reading of said numerals. The disk 2 is also provided with a plurality of slots l() cxtending from a point adjacent an end of the slot 9 to the edge of the disk. The slots 10 are located on different radii of the disk and at successively greater distances from the center thereof so that the-y follow an eccentric or spiral line, the innermost slot 10 being alined radially with the adjacent end of the slot 9 and the outermost slot 10 being o en-sided and located in theedge of the disk, as clearl shown. The slots ,10 are spaced annular y of the disk at successively increasing intervals corresponding to the distances between the radial columnsGupon the disk l so that when the disks are assembled rotation of the disk 2 will cause the slots 10 to ride over and singly uncover the blocks 7 so that any one block in any column may be read. Upon the face of the disk 2 along the slot 9 are numerals 11 indicating prices per unit alined with the respective slots 10. In the present instance, the numerals indicate prices per gallon ranging from 26 cents to 35 cents. To facilitate turning of the disk '2, I provide a marginal projection or finger piece 12 thereon.
'Ihe front or top disk 3 is disposed over the disk 2 and provided with three slots or openings 13, 14 and 15, arranged in radial alinement with the opening 13 registering with the slot 9 in the disk 2 and the quantity indications 8 upon the disk 1, the opening 141 registering with the scale of price indications 11, and the slot 15 extending to the edge of the disk in position to overlie any one of the columns 6 and accommodate the range of the slots 10. Adjacent the opening 13, the legend Gallons appears on the face of the disk 3; at the sides of the openings 14 is the legend Price cents, While adjacent the slot 15 is the legend Total amount. It is ap arent that if the price disk 2 be turned, tlie slots 10 of the spiral arrangement of slots will be caused to move successively across the elongated slot 15 in the disk 3 and at successively different portions of said elongated slot 15.
It may be assumed that the information desired is the price of 5 gallons of gasoline at 26 cents per gallon. The operator may grasp the finger piece 12 of the disk 2 and move the latter until the numeral 26 appears in the slot 14 of disk 3, this movement causing the slot 10 radiall to aline with said numeral to register with the slot 15. He will then hold the disks 2 and 3 and turn the disk 1 until the numeral 5 appears in the slot 13 of disk 3 and the sum which will simultaneously appear in the registering slot 10 of the disk 2 and the elongated slot 15 of disk 3 will represent the selling price of 5 gallons of gasoline at 26` cents per gallon, viz,$1.30.
My improved calculator can be manufactured at small cost and its front or top disk is admirably adapted to receive advertising matter, and similar matter may also be placed on the back disk 4.
Having fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
A calculator comprising a plurality of concentric pivotally-connected disks, the lowest disk having upon its face radial columns each containing a series of total cost indications and having a circular series of quantity designations spaced inwardly from y the columns and each radially alined with one'of the columns, an intermediate disk havin an arcuate slot re istering with the uantlty designations on t e first-mentioned lsk and also having a series of price indications along said slot, said intermediate disk also having a series of slots therein radially alined with the respective price designations and at successively 1'reater radial distances therefrom, and a acing disk having a series of radially alined openings therethrough, the innermost of said openings being arranged to register with the arcuate slot of the intermediate disk and the quantity designations on the lowest disk whereby said designations may be viewed singly, the intermediate opening in the face disk being arranged to register with thc price indications on the intermediate disk to permit the latter to beread singly, and the outermost opening in the face disk extending radial] and accommodating the range of the serles of slots in the intermediate disk wherebyI when` selected price and quantity designations are brought to view through the inner and intermediate openings of the face disk one of the series of slots in the intermediate disk will be caused t0 register with the outermost opening in the face disk and a total cost designation will be dis layed through they registering opening an( slot.
`In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification 1n the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
