Description

UNITED "STA Patented Apr. 24, 1923.
- CHARLES WATTS CAROL; or GLOBE} ARIZONA.
CHICKENCOOP R BROODER.
App1ication filed April 19, 1922. Serial No. 555.592. j y
To'all/whom it may concern .1
Be it known that I, CHARLESV. Canon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Globe, in the county of Gila and State of Arizona, have in'vented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken Coops or Brooders, of which the following is a'specification. i i A This invention relates to a chicken coop orbrooder and it has for its object toprovide an improved device of this nature adaptedto house a brood of little chickens either with or without a hen and to protect them from the weather and from predatory animals and give. them the necessary sun;
shine and ventilation when desired.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which follows. i
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective viewof a chicken coop constructed in accordance withthe in' vention Fig. 2 is a vertical sectionalview therethrough; and s Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontalsection. Like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
For many reasons the use of sheet metal in coops of this character is highly desirable in that when galvanized sheet metal is used it is verydurable, it does not rust, it does not requirepainting, it does not warp and crack and it is comparatively cheap. However, its use alone is objectional for the reason that it affords little protection against. eitherheat or cold. Upon very hot days the heat radiated from the sheet metal is so great as to almost sufi'ocate the chicks and on cold nights the sheet metal affords little protection to the chicks. Upon the other hand, wooden coops have the several objections above referred to and, additionally, they soon become infested with lice and mites and other forms of vermin.
It is the primary object of the present invention to provide a chickencoop having its exterior walls constructed largely of sheet metal but having said walls lined with wood,
the wooden sections being arranged to be readily removable and to receive between them and the sheet metal wall, sheets of paper, for insulating purposes and for the purpose of keeping the coop free of lice and mites and. like vermin. The coop ofthe present invention is of'substantialA shape and. comprises a sheet metal rear wall 5, a sheet metal bottom 6 and sheet metal ends 7,; one
of said ends" having a 2 door formed "therein and also having aventilator 9 therein which maybe opened to admit air to theinterioraof the coop. Themetalis stamped to provide a channel 10 which receives a woodenback' 11 ,whichfits. inside of the back {rand may receive a sheet of paper, indicated at 12. disposed between the wooden back 11- and the sheet metal back 5. This paper not only aids 1n increasing the insulating effect against .heat and cold but, if desired, a tarred or and may be readily replaced and render the coop fresh and clean with very little trouble. End boards 14' and' 15 constitute inner liningsfor the end walls 7 and may receive sheets of paper 12 corresponding to the sheets of paper disposed between the walls 5 and 11 and serving the same purpose. The end walls are channeled to form ways 16 and .17, the rear wall 11 being disposed in the ways 17 so that. this rear wall may be withdrawn by sliding it out of said way. In like manner a glass front 18 may be slid into or out of position over the front of the coop in the way 16. I may employ a board 19 con-. stituting a protective covering over the glass 18 and I hinge at 20 a screen section 21 adapted to fit over the top of the coop and extend part way over the front thereof, this screen section having hinged thereto a second screen section 21 these two screen sections complementally covering the front of the coop. In addition a metallic cover 22 is hinged at 20 and is adapted to fit down over the front of the coop. Thus by lifting thecover 22 and removing the glass 18 and be used, at no cost, to cover the bottom 13 '5 the board 19 only the screens 20 and 21 will be disposed overthe open side of the coop and the chicks will receive both light and;
Will be swung to partly closed position to prevent the rain from entering the top of the coop, forming, in effect, a sort of an awn ing. On cold nights the top 22 may be completely closed.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come Within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claims.
'Havlng described my lnventlon what I claim is:
1. A coop of sheet metal having Ways formedin its end walls for the reception 7 of lining sections of wood and sheets of paper disposed between the sheet metal coop and the Wood said lining sections of vwood and paper being equal in area to the side of the coop. A
2. A coop of the character described of general A shape made of sheet metal and having a closed rear wall and an open front, a removable glass section for the open front and a removable screen section for the open front and a cover section hinged to the coop at the rear side thereof and extending from the point of hinging over the top of the coop and down the opposite side thereof.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES WATTS CAROL.
