To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. HANCOCK,
a citizen of the United Statesof America,
residing at Geneva, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping Cars; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the W accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference numerals marked thereon.
This invention relates to dumping cars and more particularly to the variety having 1 movable gates and mechanism for automatically effecting the opening and closing of the same during the dumping movement, one object of the invention being to provide a car of this variety capable of dumping at either of opposite sides, which is simple and practical in construction and efiicientin operation, as well as comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. Another object is to supply a car of'this 1" character having the operating 'parts advantageously arranged below the top of the car body so as to be out of the way. for example in the use of a power shovel in filling the car, and at the same time so disposed as to avoid injury of the mechanism itself by inadvertent collisions with a shovel or other objects in use.
A further object is the provision of such a car having its gates and associated parts so arranged as to facilitate the dumping of material while at the same time providing against injury of the parts by the material itself while being discharged. To these and i other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts. all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

The embodiment of the invention at present preferred, and herein disclosed by way of illustration .of the principles involved,
comprises preferably a body supporting or truck portion of any suitable construction including in the present instance longitudinally extending beams 5 supported on and secured in a suitable manner to a plurality of transverse beams 6 resting on spring elements 7 carried by journal boxes 8. At 9 are the usual axles carrying wheel 10.
The car body, indicated generally at 11, preferably has onits bottom, in spaced relation on opposite sides of the longitudinal center line. a plurality of supporting knuckles 12 aligned with each other longitudinally on either side of the car. Each knuckle is supported in a socket in a block 13 carried by the corresponding transverse beam 6, from which construction it is apparent that the car body may be tilted about either longitudinal row of knuckle supports 12 as a center for dumping material from the corresponding sides of the body. The body has the substantially box like construction commonly used in such vehicles. the opposite sides being formed by normally closed gates movable to open position for dumping the material. An important feature of the present invention resides in the use of a simple unitary gate 14. supported adjacent its bottom. preferably by a pivotal form of attachment. to the car body adj acent the bottom of the latter. To this end in the present instance the lower edge of each gate is secured. as by means of hinges 15, to the adjacent side of the car bottom and in such a manner that the gate when lowered to open position forms in effect an even continuation of the bottom of the car body. An advantage of this arrangement is that the gate supporting means is located in such a position that it cannot wellbe damaged by contact with objects in use and the extension formed by thegate serves to discharge the material at a greater distance from the wheels. thereby avoiding obstruction of the latter.
The car body may be tilted in dumping by any suitable means which, however, forms no part of the present invention. The tilting movement is preferably limited by flexible elements such as chains 16 secured at one end to the truck portion and at the other to the lower end of an angle bar 17 fastened to the end walls of the car adjacent either side for stiffening the latter. These bars are connected at their lower ends,

as by means of gusset plates 18, with longitudinally extending stiffeners or angle bars 19 fixed to the bottom of the body.
The mechanism for automatically controlling the gates comprises preferably a pair of guide devices, in the present instance sheaves 20, fixed in any suitable manner on the end of the car adjacent its bottom and in spaced relation on opposite sides of the longitudinal center of the body. These guide devices are preferably located adjacent each other for a purpose to appear later. A flexible element, preferably a steel cable 21, is secured at its respective ends as by means of angular clips 22 to each of the gates at a substantial distance above the pivotal support of the latter, the intermediate portion of the cable being carried as shown by the sheaves 20 which position this portion of the cable substantially adjacent the bottom of the car for a purpose hereafter explained. Additional guide devices are preferably employed in the form of bracket keepers 23 located between each gate and the adjacent sheaf 20 to elevate this portion of the cable. These guide devices are preferably disposed adjacent the gates and level with or above the point of attachment of the cable to the latter for the purpose of maintaining an effective leverage on thegate.
Means are provided on the truck portion of the car for deflecting or extending the portion of the cable between sheaves 20 when the car is moved to material carrying or horizontal position as shown in Fig. 1, for the purpose of retracting the cable terminals and thereby closin the gates and uch means comprise preferably an abutment or post 24 in the present instance in the form of spaced strips of metal plate the lower ends of" which are pivotally supported as at 25 on a plate 26 carried by the beams 5. This post extends upwardly as shown between sheaves 20 and is provided at its upper end with a guide device for sheave 27 over which .the portion of the cable between sheaves 20 is passed. Sheave 27 is located at such an elevation relative to the car body and cable 21 is given such a length in conjunction with its arrangement on the body, as to draw the cable taut and fully close both of the gates when the car is moved to the horizontal position shown in Fig. 1. \Vhen, however. the
car body is tilted to either side, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the elevation of the car body relative to the abutment or sheave 27, due to the eccentric, support of the body on the knuckles 12, serves to release cable 21 to a suflicient extent to permit the lower gate to be swung by gravity and the weight of contained materials to the open position by the tension of the cable in addition to which the sheaves 20 adjacent to and on opposite sides of the post also provide for its proper moveis desired to dump the contents, it is merely ment. While the cable guiding devices at the points where the cable is turned through the greatest angle are in the present instance in the form of sheaves 20, it is to be understood of course that the cable may be guided throughout by means of sheaves or by bracket keepers such, for example, as those shown at 23, as conditions and judgment may dictate. The above described gate controlling mechanism is preferably em- 7 ployed at both ends of the car as shown.
The operation has been described above in connection with the description of the construction and it is evident that when the car has been moved to the place at which it B necessary to tilt the car in the proper direction, which movement automatically opens the lower gate and discharges the material at a substantial distance from the car wheels. The gates are strongly supported by their hinges and by the cable at each end which parts are so disposedand arranged that there is no obstruction of the material nor possibility of injury to the apparatus by contact therewith. The disposition of the intermediate portions of the cable adjacent the bottom of the car body by the sheaves 20 permits of the location of the extending abutment wholly below the top of the car body to leave the latter entirely unobstructed and also to protect the gate operating mechanism against impacts in loading the car. The body is supported at points sufliciently spaced to insure the desired stability while at the same time requiring but a comparatively small force for tilt ng it in dumping. The invention thus provides a car which is simple, practical and inexpensive in construction, as well as labor saving and efficientin use, and these advantageous features as well as its durable character render it an economical car in operation.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a dumping on, supporting means, a container body mounted thereon for dumping movement to either of opposite sides, gates supported adjacent their hottoms at the sides of said body and movable to open and closed positions. flexible means connected at the ends thereof with said gates. guide means on the end of said body adjacent its bottom about which said flexible means is carried, and a member arranged on the supporting means below the top of said body for engagement with said flexible means to deflect th latter when said body is in material carrying position and to move said gates to closed position.
2. In a dumping car, supporting means, a container body having a material carrying position thereon and movable to positions for dumping material to either of opposite sides thereof, gates at the sides of said body pivotally connected adjacent their lower portions with said body adjacent the bottom of the latter and movable to open and closed positions, guide means on an end of said body adjacent the bottom thereof, a flexible element connected at its ends with said gates above the pivots thereof and having its intermediate portion carried by said guide means adjacent the bottom of said body, and an abutment located on said supporting means below the top of said body for deflecting engagement with said element, said element havin a length adapted to permit opening one 0% said gates, when the body is moved to dumping position and to close said gate when said body is moved to material car rying position.
A dumping car comprising a truck portion, a body movable on said portion from substantially horizontal position to tilted positions for dumping material to either of opposite sides gates pivotally supported adjacent their bottoms on the bottoms of said sides for movement to open and closed positions, a pair of guide devices on an end of said body located in spaced relation adjacent the bottom thereof, a flexible element connected at its ends with said gates, respectively, above the pivots thereof and having its intermediate portion carried by said guide devices adjacent the bottom of said body, an abutment on said truck portiozn arranged for deflecting engagement with said element between saidguide devices to move said gates to closed position where said body is moved to horizontal position, said element having a length and arrangement adapted to permit the lower of said gates only to be moved to open position when said body is tilted for dumping. 4. A dumping car comprising a truck portion, a body movable on said portion from substantially horizontal position to tilted positions for dumping material to either of opposit sides, gates pivotally supported at the sides of said body adjacent its bottom for movement to open and closed positions, a pair of guide sheaves located in spaced relation on each end of said body adjacent its bottom, said body having its terminals secured to said gates, respectively, and an intermediate portion thereof carried by said sheaves, guide devices for elevating said elements between each gate and the corresponding sheave, and abutments on said truck portion arranged to extend said elements between said sheaves to close said gates when said body is horizontal and to release said elements and permit the lower gate to open When said body is tilted in dumping.
5. A dumping car comprising a truck portion, a body, means supporting said body for tilting dumping movement to either of opposite sides substantially about centers spaced on opposite side of the body center, side gates pivotally supported adjacent the bottom of said body for movement to open and closed positions, a pair of guide devices located in spaced relation on each end of said body adjacent its bottom, a flexible element at each end of the body having its terminals secured to said gates, respectively, and an intermediate portion thereof carried by said devices and abutments movably supported on said truck portion to conform to the tilting movement of the body and arranged to extend said elements betweensaid sheaves to close said gates when said body is horizontal and to release said elements and permit opening of one of said gates when said body is tilted in dumpi g.
