any similarly constructed wall, such a device being known commercially as a door or window buck.

The object is to provide a simply constructed device, preferably formed by stamping from suitable sheet metal, two coacting members, one to be secured at-the proper point on the outer face of the door or window frame and the other to be embedded in the wall to be adjustably engaged with the first member to securely hold the frame in position.

Another object is to provide such a device as may be easily and quickly attached to the frame and wall respectively without any necessity for nicety of adjustment or positioning during the process of building the wall, the two parts being brought into .c oacting relation when the wall reaches'the necessary height.

A full and complete understanding of the invention may be obtained from a consideration of the followin detailed description, taken in connection w1th the accompanying ea drawing forming a part of this specification, it being understood that while the drawing shows a practical form of the invention, the latter is not to be confined to strict conformity therewith, but 'may be so changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention, as specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In the construction of concrete, hollow tile, brick, stone or other similar walls, dife0 ficulty is encountered in securing the frames of doors, windows, etc. in position and preventing any relative movement of the same, the use of nails, screws or the like being, of course, precluded, and it is for the purcs pose of overcoming such 'difiiculty that the present device is intended.

The invention comprises two members one of which is in the form of an attaching plate adapted to be secured to the outer side faces W of the yertical members of a door or window frame, and .as many of such attaching plates as are deemed necessary may be secured on each side member inlongitudinal alinement with the same, and in a vertical line to coin- 76 cide with the vertical center line of the wall being built. These 7 attaching plates are preferably secured in their proper positions on the frame before the same is placed in position in the wall.

The other member a of the device is [L- shaped in form, one arm or wing of which is adapted to be placed between the courses of the brick or other masonry of which the wall is being built when the latter has as reached the (proper height to register with the aforesai attaching plate, and having its other arm or wing connected to the latter plate so that the frame is rigidly held in place, this last-named member of the device lconks tituting what may be called a mortar Referring to the'drawing, there is shown an attaching plate 1 comprising an elongated strip of sheet steel orother suitable metal formed by the simple process of stamping from ordinary stock material, the said plate being considerably longer than wide and having, adjacent to its ends,'centrally located openings 2 countersunk on we one face for the reception of fastening screws 3, as clearly illustrated in Figure 4;

- When the device is used in connection with metallic frames, the attaching strip is secured thereto by means of rivets and the said plates, in either case, are held by the fastenno ersin longitudinal alinement, parallel with the front and rear edges of the frame members and preferably midway between the same,'and any desired distance apart and from the top and bottom of said side members.

The long, vertical side edges of the plate are provided with inwardly directed, V- shaped grooves 5 extending from top to bottom of the same, for a purpose to be explained. y

The other member of the device, or mortar lock '6 is formed in a similar manner of the same kind of material, and comprises a horizontally-disposed base plate 7 havingits central portion'cut or stamped out, as at 8, in any desired shape, to provide an opening for the passage of the mortar or cement being used in the construction of the wall in which the door or window frame is to be held. At one end the base plate 7 is provided with perpendicularly disposed arms or extensions 9, whose outer edges are continuations of the side edges of the base plate 7, and whose inner, opposed edges, are beveled on the. front and rear to provide V-shaped projections 10.

The space between the arms or extensions 9 is the same as the width of the aforesaid attaching plate 1, and-the upper and lower ends of the V-shaped projections 10 are slightly rounded, vas at 11, so that the arm 9 of the mortar lock may be readily slid in a vertical direction, either upwardly or down-- wardly, into straddling relation to the attaching plate, with the grooves 5 of the latintroduction of the one member upon the other is greatly facilitated. While the mortar lock 6 has been illustrated in the drawing with the arm 9 extending upwardly, it will be understood that the latter may be directed downwardly with equal advantage, as the said arms are of equal thickness with the attaching plate 1 and are considerably less in length than the same.

As before stated, .no especial care need be exercised in applying the plates 1 to the frame members 4, except that they shall be screwed into longitudinal alinement therewith. When the wall has been started, after the frame has been placed in position and temporarily braced in the ordinary manner. the courses of brick or other material are laid in the usual way until the height of the lowermost attaching plate 1 has been reached, when the mason or builder places a mortar lock 6 into position, by sliding the arms, which may extend either upwardly or downwardly, onto the said attaching plate and moving the same downwardly thereon until the base plate 7 rests firmly upon the upper surface of the top course of brick or other material. The usual layer of mortar or cement is then spread along on the top of the latter which fills in the opening 8 in the base plate of the mortar lock and firmly embeds the same and holds it firmly in locked engagement with the wall after the, several courses following have been laid. This same operation takes place when the next higher attaching plate 1 is reached, and it will be seen that the arms 9 may be located at or near either the top or the bottom of the attaching plate 1 whentthe desired locking engagement will be secured. Thus it will be understood that no especial nicety is required in placing the plates 1 in position on the frame initially, except that they be properly disposed to freely slide between the arms 9 of the mortar look, as has been hereinbefore stated. I

From the foregoing it will be seen that an extremely simple and cheaply constructed door or window buck has been provided, which may be easily applied to theframe and the wall in .a manner to roperly coact to hold the said frame inposition, whether the latter be of wooden .or metallic construction, and that the same is hidden from view when the wall is finished. ' What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described,- an

attaching plate adaptedto be secured to the outer faces of the side members of a door or window frame in longitudinal alinement therewith, in combination with a lock plate adapted to be embedded in the mortar between the courses of brick or other material of the wall having the frame, said lock plate having a pair of perpendicularly disposed arms at one end-"spaced apart a distance to receive the attaching plate between the same,

whereby said plates are secured together against lateral movement.

2. A device of the class described, an

attaching plate adapted tobe secured to the outer faces of the side members of a door or window frame in longitudinal alinement therewith and having its opposite, vertical side edges grooved, in combination with a lock plate adapted to be embedded in the mortar between the courses of brick or other material of the wall having the frame, said lock plate having an opening to receive the mortar and a pair of perpendicularly disposed arins at one end s aced apart a distance to receive the attaching plate between the same and having their inner opposed edges shaped to fit the grooves of said plate to prevent their lateral separation and to permit relative movement of the same lengthwise of the attaching plate.

' 3. A door or window buck comprising a pair of coacting members, one member being in the form of an elongated plate adapted to be secured longitudinally of the side member of a door o'r'window frame and on the outer face thereof and having its long vertical, side edges provided with V-shape grooves extending from top to bottom thereof, the other member comprising a base plate provided with an opening and adapted to be anchored in the mortar or cement between the bricks or other material forming the wall having the said frame, the said base plate hav'mg at one end, a pair of arms arranged at right angles thereto and adapted to be located between the said frame and the adjacent Wall and in flanking relation to the attaching plate on the frame, and

said arms havin their inner opposed edges shaped to fit the ll-shape groove of the plate to hold the frame in position. a

4. In a device of the character described, the combination with an attaching plate and means'for securing the same to a Window or door frame, of a lock plate having means by which the same maybe anchored in the wall of a building, and means for connecting the two plates for relative sliding movement longitudinally of the first-mentionedplate.
