IMPROVEMENT IN ELEVATING VAULT-COVERS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THADDEUS HYAIT, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevators, and do hereby declare that the iollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an. illumin ating-sidewalk having for one of its panels the platform of an elevator, and Fig. 2 is a like view of the same with said platform lowered into the basemerit-extension.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

As ordinarily constructed, the hoistways within sidewalks are inclosed by means of one or more doors which open upward, and at such times materially obstruct operations by occupying valuable space, while, when closed, the hinges of said doors become stumbling-blocks to persons making use of the sidewalk. To obviate this difficulty is the design of my invention, which consists in an elevator in which the platform serves the purpose of a support for articles being moved, and, when raised, constitutes a part of an illumihating-sidewalk, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.

In the annexed drawings, A represents a sidewalk-plate inclosing the. upper side of a basement-extension, and provided at suitable points with illuminating-lenses, B, for the purpose of enabling light to pass downward into the space beneath, in the usual manner. The plate A is, preferably, divided into panels, one of which, A, is capable of being dropped downward, and is provided at its edges and lower side with suitable flanges, a, which, when said panel or plate is raised to place, engage with the contiguous portions of said plate A, and prevent the upper sluface of said panel from passing above the upper line of the latter. The panel A forms the platform of an elevator, and is provided at its corners with lugs O, to which the suspending-chains D are attached, said chains from thence passing upward over suitable pulleys E, and then down ward to and around the drums F of a shaft, G, which latter is caused to rotate so as to wind said chains upon or unwind the same from said drums, said hoisting or lowering apparatus being constructed in any desired in anner, and operating to raise or lower said platform in the usual way.

As thus constructed, it will be seen that when the platform is raised to a level with the sidewalk it forms a part of the same and otfers no obstruction to its free use, while, when required for hoisting or lowering purposes, said platform is in all respects as effective as though constructed solely for such use, in addition to which advantages the cost of the sidewalk is materially lessened and its general appearance improved. By providing the rabbets formed by the edges of the plattorm A and the flanges a witha suitable covering of rubber, a close water-tight joint may be secured when said platform or panel is raised to place.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new An elevator in which the platform serves the purpose of a support for articles being moved, and, when raised, constitutes a part of an illuminating-sidewalk, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
