SLIDING SHUTTER OB DOOR.
Application filed October 27, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
\ Be it known that I, EDWARD H. McCLoUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sliding Shutters or Doors, of which the followingis a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide improved means for raising and lowering shutters or doors composed of sliding sections, and the invention is embodied in the construction herein set forth and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part hereofFigure 1 is a view in elevation looking from the interior of a building and illustrating the invention generally. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line oc-m Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail in horizontal section on the line g y Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a front View on a larger scale than appears in Fig. 1 of the special sheaves. Fig. 5 is a side view of what'is shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detail of the upper left hand corner of the construction shown in Fig. 1 where the sheaves are plain. Fig. 7 is a side view of the same. Fig. 8 is a side View on a still larger scale of the special sheave and clutch. Fig. 9 is a diametric section on a similar scale of several of the special sheaves and clutches.
The shutter or door proper in the instance shown has three sections 11, 12 and 13 which have their vertical edges tongued, as at 14, to slide in vertical ways, as at 15, in the shutter or door frame so that the edges of the bodies of the sections can lie close to-- gether to form a comparatively tight closure when the sections are down in their proper respective positions.
Each of the sections 11, 12, and 13 has connected to it, by means of an eye'16, near its upper corners cords or other suitable flexible members 17 and 17 and the two Specification of Letters Patent.
cords of each section run over sheaves at 18 and 19 to a separate counterbalancing weight with which the two cords are also connected. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the cords of the sections 11, 12 and 13 are connected with the Weights 21, 22 and 23 re spectively. The several weights 21, 22 and 23 slide in a box 24 at one side of the door or shutter frame, said box being provided Patented Aug. 8, rare.
Serial No. 797,446.
with vertical guides 25 entering grooves 26 in the opposite ends or edges of the weight. Each weight has an eye like that at 21 for connecting the cords of the section it counterbalances.
The sheaves 18 are plain sheaves, each having a peripheral groove in which a cord travels while the sheaves 19 are section actuating devices. The sheaves 19 are each pro vided with two peripheral grooves one to take the cord running on a sheave 18, and the other to take the cord coming from the near side of the section. The sheaves 19, best shown in Fig. 8, are illustrated as made with an annular cavity in each of its opposite faces; or they are made with projecting hubs and on these hubs turn wheels or clutch members 19*, each having a lug or lugs 19*. On the sheaves 19 is a lug 19 located to contactwith :1 lug on the clutch member 19 so that when the sheave is sufiiciently turned the clutch member 19 is caught and carried around with the sheave. In the example shown in Fig. 9 three of the doubly grooved sheaves are shown, and between each of the outer and the intermediate sheaves are two of the clutch members or wheels, so that, assuming the door or shutter to be closed, the operation is this: If the outer or initially operating sheave be sufficiently rotated it will first pick up and rotate the proximate clutch member 19 and that clutch member in turn will pick up and rotate the next clutch member 19 and this second clutch member 19 will pick up and rotate the intermediate sheave and so on until the last or outer-sheave is picked up and rotated. Where the sheaves are of equal diameter and the relative arrangement of the lugs the same and the shutter or door sections of equal height and arranged edge opposite edge when in closing position or as shown in Fig. 1, the shutter 'or door will when the initially operated sheave is turned be raised so as to lie face to face or in the same horizontal position and from this position they will all be carried up together; and upon a reverse operation of the sheave all the sections will be first lowered together and then each of them one at a time, in succession, to the original position or as shown in Fig. 1. Thesheaves19 are in eifect driving or actuating members. When a door or shutter of this construction is operated the lower section or sections can be raised or lowered without operating the sections or section above.
In Figs. 4 and 5 is shown means for operating the driving or sheave-clutch mechanism. Said means consists of a large gear Wheel 28 connected with the first or initially operated sheave, and a pinion 29 on a shaft 30 together with a sprocket wheel 31, on the latter. An endless sprocket chain 32 applied to the-sprocket wheel 31, and extending to with easy reach of an operator on the floor or ground, affords a convenient means for operating the pinion 29 to turn the initiallypperating sheave for the purpose of raising or lowering the door or shutter or its several sections.
The weights may each be composed of separate parts and it is not necessary that the weights exactly counterbalance the respective sections. For example, the sections might be made heavier than their respective weights and gravity relied on to close the shutter.
The parts can be Varied without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. A shutter or door comprising, in combination, a shutter or door proper composed of a plurality of separately sliding sections,
a counterbalancing weight for each of said sectlons, a flexible member connecting each sliding section with a separateone of said weights, and means adapted to cause the operation of said flexible members in succes sion to successively raise or lower said sec;
successive actuation of the sections. 3, A shutter or door comprislng, 1n comb1nat1on, a shutter or door composed of a plurality of separately sliding sections, a
counter-balancing weight for each of said sections, a flexible member connecting each sliding section with a separate one of said weights, and separate driving members, for said flexible members provided with intermediate connecting devices'including' a separate idler member adapted to connect the driving members to cause the successive ac-- tuation of the sections.
