UNl'lE STATES HERMAN C. PRIEBE, OF BLUE ISLAND, ILLINOIS.
CAR DOOR.
Application led January 2S, 1921.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HERMAN C. PRIEBE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blue Island, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Car Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and eX- act description.
My invention relates to doors which are bodily movable in their own planes suoli as are employed, for example, in the sides of freight cars.
In practicing my invention I employ mechanism for forcing the bodily movement of the door in its own plane comprising one element in the form of a lever that carries a cam member and an element constituting u cam member complemental to the aforesaid cam member, one of these elements being carried by the door and the other being mounted apart from the door upon one side thereof, the movementof the lever forcing movement of the door through the intermediation of the co-operating cam members.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention the cam member upon the lever is produced by means of a slot inclined with respect to the lever, the complemental cam member being in the form of a post receivable in this slot, the swinging movement of the lever resulting in the travel of the post in said slot to open or close the door.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawing u showing the preferred embodiment thereof and in which Fig. l illustrates a portion of a freight car in side elevation having a single door, and provided with a door opening and closing device of my invention, the door being shown in closed position; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the co-operatingl cam members of the door opening and closing device of my invention; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig, 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different ligures.
I have shown in the drawing a portion of a single door 1 but it is obvious that my invention is not to be limited to the use thereof in connection with a single door. This door is provided, as usual, with rollers upon its upper end, not shown, that roll upon a door supporting track, also not showmwhich Serial No. 440,989.
is mounted upon the adjacent side of the freight car 2. The manner of suspending such a freight car door so that it may bodily travel in its own plane is so well known to those skilled in the art as to require no illustration and no further description.
lVhen the door is in position to close the door opening in the side of the car one upright meeting edge thereof engages a face of the upright angle rail 3. This angle rail carries ears 4 and 5 which ovcrlie the outer face of the door to hold it close to the side of the car. The door opening lever 6 is preferably mounted apart from the door upon one side thereof, this lever being desirably pivoted at its upper end to the ear 4. The post 7 that co-operates with the lever is consequently mounted upon the door. The lever 6 has a lateral enlargement or wing 8 that is formed with a slot 9 inclined to the lever whereby the portion 8 of the lever is formed into a cam member. The post 7 is receivable in this slot and constitutes a complemental cam member. When the lever is swung the post 7 will travel in the cam slot 9 and will then co-operate with the cam member 8 to effect the bodily movement of the door in its own plane.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention the post is formed with an elongated head 10 extending upon both sides thereof. This head is of such a size and is so disposed that it will be in registry with the slot 9 when the door is sulciently opened, this head then being capable of being passed through said slot either to bring the post intoor out of the slot. Vthen the post is within the slot and the lever is placed in vertical position the door will be closed and the head of the post will be inclined with respect to said slot so as to overhang the cam member portion 8 of the lever 6 in the region of the slot to prevent separation of the lever and post when the door is in a closed position whereby the lever is enabled to take part in holding the door closed. The head of the post serves to keep the lever in its own plane in which it may be further held by means of the hook 11 that is provided upon the lever and the eye 12 passing through the opening 13 in the lever and through which the free end of the hook is also projected. The hook may be provided with an apertured ear 14 to enable a sealing wire l5 to be assembled with the hook after the free end thereof has been passed through llfl the eye 12, the ends of the wire having any usual or suitable car seal applied thereto.
Reference may be had to my co-pending application Serial No. 440,988, tiled January 29, 1921.
While l have herein shown and partienlarly described the preferred embodiment of the invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing. from the spirit of my invention, but having thusdeseribed'my invention claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:-
l. The combination with a door mounted to move bodily substantially in its plane; of mechanism for forcing the bodily movement of the door comprising one clement in. the
form of a lever that carries i cam member and an element constitutinga cam member eomplemental to the aforesaid cam member, one of these elements being carried by the door and the other being mounted apart from the door upon one side thereof, the movement of the lever forcing movement of the door through the intermediation of the (zo-operating cam members, the cam member that is eomplementalto' the cam member carried by the lever over-hanging the latter cam vvmember when the door is in closed positionv then to prevent separation of these cam members,l the cam members being relatively formed to permit their separation and the 'subsequent independent'movement of the lever when the door is sufliciently opened.
2. The combination with a door mounted to move bodily substantially in its plane; of mechanism for forcing the bodily movement ofthe door comprising one element in the form of a lever having a slot inclined with respect thereto and another element in the form of -apost receivable in said slot, one oflthese elements beingearried by the door and the other being mounted apart from the kLenawee door upon one side thereof, the slotted portion of the lever and Said post co-operating to effect bodily movement of the door when the lever is swung, said post having a head .which overlies a portion of the lever margining its slot when the door is closed.
3. The combination'with a door mounted to move bodily substantially in its plane; of mechanism for forcing the bodily movement of the door comprising one element in the form of a lever having a slot and another element in the form of a post receivable in said slot, one of these elements being carried by the door and the other being mounted apart from the door upon one side thereof, the slotted portion of the lever and said post eo-operating to effect bodily movement of the door when the lever is swung, said post having a head which overlies a portion of the lever margining its slot when the door is closed.
t. The combination with a door mounted to move bodily substantially in its'plane; of mechanism for forcing the bodily movement of the door comprising one elementin the form of a lever having a slot and another element in the form of a post receivable in said slot, one of these elements being carried by the door and the other being mounted apart from the door upon one side thereof, th slotted portion of the lever and said post co-operating toeffect bodily movement of the door when the lever is swung, said post having' a head which is inclined with respect to said slot, when the door is closed, then to overhang the slotted portion of the lever and which'head is of a size and location to bring it intoy registry With said slot and. enable it to 'be passed therethrough when the door is sufficiently opened. i
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this twenty-first. day of January HERMAN o. ramen.
