To all whom itvnay concern.
Be it known that I, Jii rnsltioFiinLANn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tifiin, in the county of Eastland and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Train Stops, of which the following is a specification. reference being had to the accompanying draw ings.
This invention relates to train stops and more particularly to automatic train stops' It is an object of the invention to pro vide a device ofthischaracter capable of causing the application of brakes to the train without requiring the operation of the engineers valve of the air brake system.
It is another object of the invention to provide a device of this character wherein the train line is tapped and provided with a valve which extends below thecab of a locomotive, said valve being arranged to engage operating means in order to open the valve and permit the application of the brakes.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this character wherein the means for actuating the valve are brought into position upon actuation of the signal or semaphore, and moved out of operative position upon return of the signal or semaphore. I
It is still a further object of the invention to provide actuating means of this character embodying a trip lever pivoted at one end and at one side of its center and including means connected to the semaphore or signal for raising the lever to its operative position through the medium of gravity when the signal is withdrawn or lowered.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a train stop constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention;

Figure 4 is a side elevation and sectional view of the trip lever, the lever being set for actuating the angle cock.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the train line or pipe of the air brake system, said line including a T 6 from which an emergency pipe 7 extends. The lower end portion 8 of the pipe is extended outwardly substantially at right angles to the main portion of the pipe '7. This end of the pipe is adapted to be inserted in one end of an angle cock 9, the opposite end 10 of the angle cock forming the air outlet of the valve. Projecting from the valve is a valve stem 11 to which an operating arm or valve lever 12 is connected. This lever is disposed substantially vertically and in spaced relation to the wheels of the locomotive. It is intended that when the lever 12 is moved to one side, that the air be exhausted through the outlet of the angle cock to apply the brakes.
In order to accomplish the application of the brakes as above described, a. novel trip mechanism is provided, said mechanism embodying base member 13 adapted to engage the ground along side of the track. One end portion of the base 13 is provided with a pair of spaced parallel ears 1 1 having openings 15 which register. A trip lever 16, is disposed upon the base 13, said lever being relatively thick and having an opening 17 provided in its end 18. The opening 17 extends transversely of the lever and is also positioned. to one side of the longitudinal center of the sides 19 ot the lever. The extremitv of the end 18 is formed into a stop 18" adapted at times to engage the end face of the base 13 adjacent the ears 14 to limit movement of the lever in one direction. Projecting from one face of the lever and adjacent the end 18 is an arm 20, said arm extending at right angles to said lever and having an opening 21 provided in its extremity for the reception of a rod or cable 22 which extends to and is actuated by a semaphore or signal mechanism (not shown).
In operation, when the semaphore or signal is set to signify a stop, the operation of the semaphore causes the cable 22 to pull the arm from a vertical to a horizontal position. thereby swinging the lever upwardly to a vertical position and into the path of movement of the lever 12 of the angle cock. As long as the semaphore is .iaintained in its operative position. the cable will retain the lever in its opera the train. as the sto 1.8 will enn'a e the end face of the base so that the lever 12 must respond and open the angle cock. iVhen the semaphore or signal returned to its inoperative position the rod or cable is returned or released cai'ising the Weight of the trip lever to swing the same downwardly toward'the base in view of the fact that the opening; 17 is disposed to one side of the centerv of the lever so that gravity assists in positioning the lever substantially parallel and into engagement with the base 13.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides not only an eflicient mechanism for automatically stop ing a train, should the signal be disregarded by the engineer, but also provides a mechanism Which is simple in construction and can be readily applied to any type ol" locomotive and signal system, no special means of operation or adjustment is neces? sary.
What is claimed is- A train stop of the character described embodying a relatively broad base member, a pair of ears projecting from one end face of the base member closely adjacent the sides of the base member and extending beyond the top of the base member in spaced parallel relation to each other, a relatively broad trip lever adapted to be disposed upon the base member and between the projecting portions of the ears. that portion of the. lever disposed between the ears being pivoted to said ears, means carried by said pivoted end portion for moving the lever into the path of a movable object. the extremity of said lever being; substantially extended to one side to provide a stop adapt ed at times to engage the end face of the base between the ears, to prevent movement of the lever away from the base beyond. a pointsubstantially at right angles to the base.
