TRAIN-CONTROL MEANS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, STEVEN PALS and EDWIN G. BOSTWIOK, citizens or" the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Train-Control Means, oi which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in train control means. i
The'main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved means for automatically stopping a train by setting a semaphore or other tripping means at the side 01"- the track.
Second, to provide an improved train control meanswhich is not likely to get out of repair or become inoperative.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which Fig. I is a side elevation of a locomotive on the track equipped with our improve ments, the parts being shown mainly in con ventional form.

In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a railway locomotive, 2 the rails, and 3 the ties. The air pipe of the brake system is represented at 4. In this system we install valves 5 and 6, the valves being arranged so that when opened they set-the brakes.
' 7 represents the brake valve in control or the engineer.
The valve 6 is operated through the tappet lever 8 pivot-ally mountedon the under side of the running board 9 of the locomotive and connected by the link 10 to the valve 6. A second tappet lever 11 is mounted on a hanger. 12 to. project downwardly, this leverbeing connected by the link 13 to the valve 5. At the side of the track is a semaphore 14' having a swinging arm 15 adapted when swung to erected position to engage the tappet lever 8 as the locomotive passesthe semaphore. This semaphore arm is controlled from the rock shaft 16 having a bell crank 17 thereon, one arm of which is connected to the semaphore arm by the link 18, the operating rod 19' being connected to the other arm. This operating rod is extended to the tower or other signal station point.
We provide a trip member 20 to coact with the trip lever 11, the trip member 20 being mounted to reciprocate in the housing 21, which is mounted between a pair of the ties 3, so that when the trip member is projected it is in position to engage the lever. 11. The trip member 20 is provided with a rack 22 actuated from the gear 23 disposed within the housing, the gear being drivenfrom the segment 24: having an arm 25 thereon. This arn125 is connected by the lint; 26 to an arm 27 on the rock shaft 16,. the rock shaft 16 being provided with a housing 28 and the link 26 with a housing 29. A housing 30 is provided for the arm 27 on the rock shaft.
With this arrangement, the trip and the semaphore may be at considerable distance. They are shown in the accompanying drawing relatively close together in order that the cooperating relation of the parts with the tappets on the locomotive might be illustrated.

Two control means are provided which may be set simultaneously, thereby lessening the possibility of "failure in stopping the tramp e have lllustrated and described our improvements mainly in conventional form, but We believe in sufficient detail to enable those skilled in the art to embody our improvements as circumstances may render desirable.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An apparatus for stopping trains equipped with air brake systems having embodied therein a pair of control valves and operating means therefor comprising independent tappet levers, a semaphore arm disposed at the side of the track so that when act ated it is in position to coact with one of said tappet levers, a gear box trip member housing mounted at one side of the track, a trip member provided with a rack mounted in said housing to project therefrom when actuated to 'COZI-Ct with the other of said tappet levers, an actuating mean for'said trip member comprising a gear enacting with said vrack, and a segment meshingwith said and provided with an arm, an actuating means for said semaphore comprisinga rock shaft, said rock shaft being extended towards the track and provided with an arm, said rock shaft arm being connected with the arm of said segment, and means for actuating said rock shaft.

3. An apparatus for stopping trains equipped with air brake. systems having embodied therein a pair of control valves and operating means therefor comprising independent tappets, a semaphore arm disposed so that when erected it is in position to coact with one of said tappe'ts, a trip member mounted on the track to coact with the other tappet, means for actuating said semaphore, andoperatingconnections therefrom to said trip member.
